- DirectorEuzhan PalcyStarsPenelope Ann MillerKevin PollakMichael BeachWhen six-year-old Ruby is chosen to be the first African-American to integrate her local elementary school, she is subjected to the true ugliness of racism for the first time.I remember this was the first ever movie that made me cry. We watched this in 3rd grade and my little 9 year old self just couldn't take watching Ruby deal with all the hardships in life.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksRobin WrightGary SiniseThe history of the United States from the 1950s to the '70s unfolds from the perspective of an Alabama man with an IQ of 75, who yearns to be reunited with his childhood sweetheart.I CANNOT watch the part where Forrest meets his son and the end of this movie without crying profusely.
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsClint EastwoodBee VangChristopher CarleyAfter a Hmong teenager tries to steal his prized 1972 Gran Torino, a disgruntled, prejudiced Korean War veteran seeks to redeem both the boy and himself. In the long run, Walt looked out for Thao and protected him, and turned out to be a pretty decent man. Pretty heart wrenching to think about.
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. The message in this movie is still so powerful today and that's why it's in my Top 5 Christmas movies. I don't understand why they only show it at Christmas!
- DirectorTom HooperStarsHugh JackmanRussell CroweAnne HathawayIn 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.I liked the stage version better, but Anne Hathaway's song was so beautiful that I started to cry maniacally with her.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring. The ending of this movie with Frodo and Gandalf leaving the other hobbits was so bittersweet.
- DirectorDavid FrankelStarsOwen WilsonJennifer AnistonEric DaneA family learns important life lessons from their adorable, but naughty and neurotic dog.Just to give you an idea how sad this movie is, I cried like an idiot... and I'm a cat person.
- DirectorMimi LederStarsKevin SpaceyHaley Joel OsmentHelen HuntA young boy attempts to make the world a better place after his teacher gives him that chance. Not the best movie ever, but it's extremely emotional.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsEllen BurstynJared LetoJennifer ConnellyThe drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..To see a bunch of people fall victim to drug addiction was harrowing. Ellen Burstyn's character especially, her fall from grace reduced me to a big blubbery mess!
- DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsMichael DouglasBenicio Del ToroCatherine Zeta-JonesA conservative judge is appointed by the President to spearhead America's escalating war against drugs, only to discover that his teenage daughter is a crack addict. Two DEA agents protect an informant. A jailed drug baron's wife attempts to carry on the family business.Another drug movie. I didn't cry very hard but a few parts choked me up a little.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion.Such a beautiful ending to a beautiful movie! It touches my heart.
- DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsSean PennBenicio Del ToroNaomi WattsA freak accident brings together a critically ill mathematician, a grieving mother, and a born-again ex-con.The whole movie hurts my heart.
- DirectorRoberto BenigniStarsRoberto BenigniNicoletta BraschiGiorgio CantariniWhen an open-minded Jewish waiter and his son become victims of the Holocaust, he uses a perfect mixture of will, humor and imagination to protect his son from the dangers around their camp. It's so unfair how this movie can be so funny in the beginning and then destroy you in the end. Grrrrr.... and of course, the fact that it takes place in a concentration camp only makes things worse. But Roberto Begnini's character was a great one!
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTom HanksMichael Clarke DuncanDavid MorseA tale set on death row, where gentle giant John Coffey possesses the mysterious power to heal people's ailments. When the lead guard, Paul Edgecombe, recognizes John's gift, he tries to help stave off the condemned man's execution.Such a powerful and emotional ending. John Coffey's "I want people to stop being ugly to each other" speech in particular choked me up and it only turned into unpleasant sobs from there.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMatt DamonTom SizemoreFollowing the Normandy Landings, a group of U.S. soldiers go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers have been killed in action. The most amazing war movie I've ever seen. Yes it's extremely violent, but it's also moving and sentimental.
- DirectorJerry ZuckerStarsPatrick SwayzeDemi MooreWhoopi GoldbergAfter a young man is murdered, his spirit stays behind to warn his lover of impending danger, with the help of a reluctant psychic.Yeah, I know, I know. It's a silly chick flick. But it's still a great testament to the power of love. The very end of this movie did me in, considering Patrick Swayze is no longer with us.
- DirectorRoger AllersRob MinkoffStarsMatthew BroderickJeremy IronsJames Earl JonesLion prince Simba and his father are targeted by his bitter uncle, who wants to ascend the throne himself.Who HASN'T cried over this movie? Really...
- DirectorClint EastwoodStarsHilary SwankClint EastwoodMorgan FreemanFrankie, an ill-tempered old coach, reluctantly agrees to train aspiring boxer Maggie. Impressed with her determination and talent, he helps her become the best and the two soon form a close bond.To put it into context how hard this movie made me cry, I had to watch the It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia parody immediately afterward just to calm down.
