2013 in Film(So Far)
A work in progress. Will be updated any time I watch a new film released in 2013/late 2012. A little summary of my thoughts on each film alongside a rating will be added also. Comment on what you think of my opinions if you want also. Thanks.
The films released in late 2012 are being added to this list as I live in the Republic of Ireland and therefore the release of certain films can be prolonged as compared to America. Example: Django Unchained being released Dec. 25, 2012 in America, while it was released here on Jan. 13, 2013.

- DirectorRuben FleischerStarsSean PennRyan GoslingEmma StoneIt's 1949 Los Angeles, the city is run by gangsters and a malicious mobster, Mickey Cohen. Determined to end the corruption, John O'Mara assembles a team of cops, ready to take down the ruthless leader and restore peace to the city.8/10
A wonderfully acted, fantastically directed and well wrote film. It's not going to be considered one of the greatest of all time, but it does have a lot of memorable and funny moments as well as being a thoroughly enjoyable film. Highly recommended for Sean Penn's acting alone. - DirectorTom HooperStarsHugh JackmanRussell CroweAnne HathawayIn 19th-century France, Jean Valjean, who for decades has been hunted by the ruthless policeman Javert after breaking parole, agrees to care for a factory worker's daughter. The decision changes their lives forever.7/10
I liked Les Miserables, however overrated I may perceive it to be. The first half was tremendous, however the film suffered from a downhill, tedious last half where everything became so dragged out and prolonged that I wanted to leave the cinema with the great vibes I received from the first half and just, forget about the last half. - DirectorKim Jee-woonStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerForest WhitakerJohnny KnoxvilleThe leader of a drug cartel busts out of a courthouse and speeds to the Mexican border, where the only thing in his path is a sheriff and his inexperienced staff.6/10
I have a certain disliking for this genre of film and especially when I heard Arnie was involved. However I do like the director and I had nothing else to do so I said I'd go and watch it. I wasn't annoyed, and in fact it was better than my previous notions had led me to believe it was going to be, but that doesn't undermine the fact that the film is just a popcorn flick with no logic and a lot ridiculousness. But it's funny ridiculousness. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsDaniel Day-LewisSally FieldDavid StrathairnAs the Civil War rages on, U.S President Abraham Lincoln struggles with continuing carnage on the battlefield as he fights with many inside his own cabinet on his decision to emancipate the slaves.8/10
I really enjoyed this film. Everything was well-done and you could tell that a professional was making it. The acting was perfect, the casting was perfect, the writing was great the directing was great. I think it suffered from a tad bit too long of a run-time though and in addition it's non-rewatchability. It seems like you will remember this film, but probably will watch it once, maybe twice in your whole life. - DirectorKathryn BigelowStarsJessica ChastainJoel EdgertonChris PrattA chronicle of the decade-long hunt for al-Qaeda terrorist leader Osama bin Laden after the September 2001 attacks, and his death at the hands of the Navy S.E.A.L.s Team 6 in May 2011.6/10
Highly overrated and incredibly tedious. Not just in it's pacing but also in it's approach to this concept. The whole film could have been so much better but suffers from bad directing and a lack of character development. Even the momentous Osama shooting scene was poorly directed and the whole film was completely prolonged. However, it does have a few redeeming qualities. - DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsDenzel WashingtonNadine VelazquezDon CheadleTroubling questions arise after airline pilot Whip Whitaker makes a miracle landing after a mid-air catastrophe.8/10
A great film. Really enjoyable, memorable and well-done. The directing was fantastic, the writing was very, very good and the acting was also fantastic. I appreciated its approach to drugs in terms of just making fun of them but also, simultaneously, portraying the dangers of them. Every joke hit and it was just an all-round great film. - DirectorRoger MichellStarsBill MurrayLaura LinneyOlivia WilliamsThe story of the love affair between FDR and his distant cousin Margaret "Daisy" Suckley, centered around the weekend in 1939 when the King and Queen of the United Kingdom visited upstate New York.5/10
Not much to say about this film other than the fact that it probably shouldn't have been made the way it was. It was incredibly historically inaccurate and mindless. The film wan't enjoyable and the acting wasn't the best. The concept should have been approached more seriously and, ultimately, better. - DirectorSacha GervasiStarsAnthony HopkinsHelen MirrenScarlett JohanssonThe relationship between Alfred Hitchcock and his wife Alma Reville during the filming of Psycho (1960) in 1959 is explored.7/10
The film was good, it was enjoyable. The acting by Helen Mirren was actually good, however I believe Anthony Hopkins overacted at certain parts. However, something inside me tells me that this film could have a lot better than what it was if they had to have focused more on the actual making of Psycho than on the love story which unfolded during it. - DirectorDan MazerStarsRose ByrneRafe SpallAlex MacqueenNewlywed couple Nat and Josh are deliriously happy despite their differences, though friends and family aren't convinced that they can last. With their first anniversary approaching and attractive alternatives in the mix, can they last?5/10
I didn't really enjoy this film. It was OK but I would have rathered not watching it. It was unoriginal, uninspired and unfortunately unfunny. It gave in to too many chilches. The only upside is Rafe Spall, he was pretty good in it and made done-to-death jokes kind of funny. But I feel certain jokes could have been delivered better by everyone, and they would have been funnier. - DirectorJudd ApatowStarsPaul RuddLeslie MannMaude ApatowPete and Debbie are both about to turn 40, their kids hate each other, both of their businesses are failing, they're on the verge of losing their house, and their relationship is threatening to fall apart.5/10
Another unfunny comedy. I though the purpose of comedy was to be comedic. The film was way too dragged out and I didn't laugh at anything. Everything seemed forced and the whole film felt cheap in general. Almost like a cop-out. It was the perfect example of a waste of talent including Judd Apatow, who I believe is capable of making entertaining, funny films. - DirectorTommy WirkolaStarsJeremy RennerGemma ArtertonPeter StormareBrother/sister duo Hansel and Gretel are professional witch-hunters who help innocent villagers. One day they stumble upon a case that could hold the key to their past.6/10
Entertaining is the perfect word for this film. It is full of errors and complete mindless rubbish, but somehow it manages to be entertaining enough that you overlook them. Nothing special about the it, but it's defiantly a cinema/one watch kind of film. In addition, I commend them for their use of practical effects also. - DirectorAllen HughesStarsMark WahlbergRussell CroweCatherine Zeta-JonesIn a city rife with injustice, ex-cop Billy Taggart seeks redemption and revenge after being double-crossed by its most powerful figure: Mayor Nicholas Hostetler.6/10
Typical Walhberg. Illogic, completely insane and ridiculous plot twists but entertaining enough for you to remark that the film is, "all right." How Russell Crowe signed up is beyond my understanding, but the film is all right. - DirectorRich MooreStarsJohn C. ReillyJack McBrayerJane LynchA video game villain wants to be a hero and sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives.8/10
I really liked this film. It was really enjoyable and completely original. In addition it was really well cast, everyone was perfect for each of their designated roles. I'm unsure as to why I like it as much as I do, but it appears to have a certain unidentifiable charm to it that I just really liked. - DirectorSteven SoderberghStarsRooney MaraChanning TatumJude LawA young woman's world unravels when a drug prescribed by her psychiatrist has unexpected side effects.7/10
I like the majority of Steven Soderbergh's films, and this is an inclusion. I did enjoy this film, however ridiculous certain things were, they were done in a Soderbergh sort of way, the way that makes you not question them and just play along. The acting was good and it had to same feel to Contagion which was wrote by Scott Z. Burns the same person who wrote this film and I liked Contagion. An enjoyable film overall. - DirectorMike CockayneStarsMartin MaloneyOwen ColganChris TordoffEddie Durkan, the self-proclaimed leader of the 'Bucks is dreading spending another summer bored out of his skull. Ireland has qualified for the Euros in Poland, but with no money and apathetic mates, the task falls to Eddie to get them out of Castletown and onto the road in search of football and the craic.4/10
Most people probably wouldn't have seen this and I'd advise people who haven't to not. The film was pretty bad. It's based off an Irish television show called The Hardy Bucks which I don't enjoy either but the concept for this film was incredibly promising however they succumbed to the same old, generic sex and drug jokes that are tiresome by this stage. Not funny at all. The only good thing is its soundtrack. - DirectorDon ScardinoStarsSteve CarellLuke VanekSteve BuscemiA veteran Vegas magician tries to revive his career after his longtime partner quits, he gets fired from his casino act, and an edgy new "street magician" steals his thunder.6/10
Decent film with a few funny moments but not enough to make me like it as much as I should have. It was a really good waste of talent, but not so much that I hold a lot of contempt for it. The film is just bland, and forgetful, but it's OK I suppose. - DirectorSeth GordonStarsJason BatemanMelissa McCarthyJohn ChoMild mannered businessman Sandy Patterson travels from Denver to Florida to confront the deceptively harmless looking woman who has been living it up after stealing Sandy's identity.6/10
I loved Horrible Bosses, so I was really exited for this film. I think my expectations outweighed the actual completed film and I was left disappointed. It contains a few funny moments, but it's no where near as memorable as Horrible Bosses and, quite frankly, no where near as funny. Perhaps I'm being a bit biased however, with the 6 rating, because I'm not sure it deserves it. - DirectorRodney AscherStarsBill BlakemoreGeoffrey CocksJuli KearnsAn exploration of various interpretations of Stanley Kubrick's horror film, The Shining (1980).8/10
An unconventional documentary with an interesting concept and even more interesting theories. I might not agree with them all, but they do raise some great points and it's just one of many experimentations of one of the greatest directors of all time, and one of his most prolific films. Really enjoyable. - DirectorDanny BoyleStarsJames McAvoyRosario DawsonVincent CasselAn art auctioneer mixed up with a group of criminals partners with a hypnotherapist in order to recover a lost painting.8/10
Visually stunning and greatly acted, this film is a great film and should be considered as one of Danny Boyle's best. Certain things in it may have been a tad bit predictable, but that defiantly does not undermine the fact that it has to be regarded as a great film with a lot of visual flare, that's directed very well and wrote the same. The director of photography, Anthony Dod Mantle, is one of the best working today. - DirectorJoseph KosinskiStarsTom CruiseMorgan FreemanAndrea RiseboroughA veteran assigned to extract Earth's remaining resources begins to question what he knows about his mission and himself.6/10
I didn't particularly like this film. It's riddled with errors and is extremely generic. It started promising but my expectations went on a skydive downhill after the first 20 minutes. However it does contain some great visual effects but their effect is disintegrated by the writing and cliches. - DirectorHarmony KorineStarsVanessa HudgensSelena GomezAshley BensonFour college girls hold up a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. While partying, drinking, and taking drugs, they are arrested, only to be bailed out by a drug and arms dealer.8/10
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. I'm struggling to comprehend the general consensus of this film, as being bad. As I thought it was probably the best film of the year, thus far. In fact it really should have been one of my favorite films of all time except for it's condescending writing. So much dialog was repeated and scenes dragged out due to Harmony Korine assuming the intelligence of his audience is as small as a pea. However, all that aside, it really is a great film. - DirectorFede AlvarezStarsJane LevyShiloh FernandezJessica LucasFive friends head to a remote cabin, where the discovery of a Book of the Dead leads them to unwittingly summon up demons living in the nearby woods.7/10
A good remake, one of the few. But it doesn't stay as true to the original as it could have and therefore it loses a certain amount of it's appeal. It succumbed to a few too many cliches and the acting wasn't all that great. It was an unnecessary remake, but I'm neither happy nor disappointed that they decided to make it, I'm sort of, numb to it. But it is enjoyable. - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJamie FoxxChristoph WaltzLeonardo DiCaprioWith the help of a German bounty-hunter, a freed slave sets out to rescue his wife from a brutal plantation owner in Mississippi.7/10
Many people are going to hate me for this, but I found this film incredibly overrated. QT has made two of the best films of all time, Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, but unfortunately his talent started to diminish after the former. He makes enjoyable films, but that's it. Funny at parts and enjoyable overall, the film suffered from it's extenuating run-time and ridiculously over-the-top violence that really isn't over-the-top. I also don't agree with this conception that people have of QT as being controversial or unapologetic, as he really isn't either. Maybe 15 years ago he was, but not anymore.
