This influenced a whole generation of filmmakers - most notably Ram Gopal Varma and Mahesh Manjrekar, who made two acclaimed underworld films in their own right - Satya (1998) and Vaastav: The Reality (1999).

This then transform the simple-minded lad who has dreams for his country into the city's most dreaded gangster, Munna whose only motive in life is revenge.Anil Kapoor won his first Best Actor award and Tezaab was the first Blockbuster of Anil Kapoor's career. The movie also started the career of actor Chunky Pandey. Tezaab acted as N Chandra's box office hat-trick with his previous hits being Ankush (1986) and Pratighaat (1987). The movie also marked the first time Saroj Khan and Madhuri Dixit collaborated for the first time.
