- DirectorTom McCarthyStarsMark RuffaloMichael KeatonRachel McAdamsThe true story of how the Boston Globe uncovered the massive scandal of child molestation and cover-up within the local Catholic Archdiocese, shaking the entire Catholic Church to its core.*BEST MOTION PICTURE-DRAMA*
-I've switched between this and Mad Max numerous times. I'm going with Spotlight simply because it is the more "awards-bait" film. I won't be surprised if Carol pulls off the upset either.
*BEST SCREENPLAY-MOTION PICTURE (TOM MCCARTHY AND JOSH SINGER*
-Another award that can go any way, but I'm giving it to the film that has the best shot at Best Picture in the category. The Hateful 8 is the likeliest runner-up. - DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshipper and a drifter named Max.*BEST DIRECTOR (GEORGE MILLER)*
-This category is kind of a crapshoot with no clear frontrunner by any means. This film has gotten a surprising amount of love lately, so I'm giving Miller the edge over Ridley Scott and Alejandro G. Iñárritu. - DirectorAdam McKayStarsChristian BaleSteve CarellRyan GoslingIn 2006-2007 a group of investors bet against the United States mortgage market. In their research, they discover how flawed and corrupt the market is.*BEST MOTION PICTURE-COMEDY/MUSICAL*
-With the traction it's been gaining consistently, I'm giving this film the win over The Martian. It will for sure go to one or the other. - DirectorAlejandro G. IñárrituStarsLeonardo DiCaprioTom HardyWill PoulterA frontiersman on a fur trading expedition in the 1820s fights for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by members of his own hunting team.*BEST ACTOR-DRAMA (LEONARDO DICAPRIO)*
-This could be DiCaprio's to lose, but don't be too surprised if Michael Fassbender pulls off an upset. - DirectorLenny AbrahamsonStarsBrie LarsonJacob TremblaySean BridgersA little boy is held captive in a room with his mother since his birth, so he has never known the world outside.*BEST ACTRESS-DRAMA (BRIE LARSON)*
-The addition of Vikander and Mara make this a really tight race, but it should be between Larson and Saoirse Ronan. The slight edge goes to Larson for her brilliant performance. - DirectorRidley ScottStarsMatt DamonJessica ChastainKristen WiigAn astronaut becomes stranded on Mars after his team assume him dead, and must rely on his ingenuity to find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive and can survive until a potential rescue.*BEST ACTOR-COMEDY/MUSICAL (MATT DAMON)*
-He is the nominee with the best chance at an Oscar, so this award should be his. Christian Bale could pull off the upset though. - DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsJennifer LawrenceRobert De NiroBradley CooperJoy is the story of the title character, who rose to become founder and matriarch of a powerful family business dynasty.*BEST ACTRESS-COMEDY/MUSICAL (JENNIFER LAWRENCE)
-This is J-Law's award to lose. The only thing that can hurt her is the film's mediocre reviews, but it's hard to imagine anybody else winning. Lily Tomlin is the runner-up here. - DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsTom HanksMark RylanceAlan AldaDuring the Cold War, an American lawyer is recruited to defend an arrested Soviet spy in court, and then help the CIA facilitate an exchange of the spy for the Soviet captured American U2 spy plane pilot, Francis Gary Powers.*BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR (MARK RYLANCE)*
-Here's another tight acting race. Rylance has been in the conversation since the film's release, and the snubs of Spotlight actors makes it easier for him. Sylvester Stallone also has a strong chance of winning for Creed, but Rylance has a slight edge. - DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsSamuel L. JacksonKurt RussellJennifer Jason LeighIn the dead of a Wyoming winter, a bounty hunter and his prisoner find shelter in a cabin currently inhabited by a collection of nefarious characters.*BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS (JENNIFER JASON LEIGH)*
-Leigh is the clear favorite here, especially since Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander were nominated as leads instead of supporting. Jane Fonda is the runner-up here.
*BEST ORIGINAL SCORE (ENNIO MORRICONE)*
-Word is the score for this film is outstanding. This is a tough category to call, but I'm expecting it to be between this and Carol. - DirectorPete DocterRonnie Del CarmenStarsAmy PoehlerBill HaderLewis BlackAfter young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life and moved to San Francisco, her emotions - Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness - conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.*BEST ANIMATED MOTION PICTURE*
-Inside Out wins this award. That's all there is to it. Anomalisa is runner-up, but has almost no chance of winning. - DirectorLászló NemesStarsGéza RöhrigLevente MolnárUrs RechnA Jewish-Hungarian concentration camp prisoner sets out to give a child he mistook for his son a proper burial.*BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE MOTION PICTURE*
-This film has a very strong chance of winning this award. Mustang, another critical darling, is the next strongest candidate. - DirectorBill PohladStarsJohn CusackPaul DanoElizabeth BanksIn the 60s, Beach Boys leader Brian Wilson struggles with emerging psychosis as he attempts to craft his avant-garde pop masterpiece. In the 80s, he's a broken, confused man under the 24-hour watch of shady therapist, Dr. Eugene Landy.*BEST ORIGINAL SONG (ONE KIND OF LOVE)*
-This is another tough category to call. It helps that this song is from a music biopic, so I'm picking it to win. "See You Again" from Furious 7 is probably the top runner-up.
