Of all the qualities that typified Frank Zappa, perhaps the most striking is that he was a paradox. A workaholic perfectionist rock star who eschewed the hippie culture of the 1960s, deploring its conformism, spurious ideals and drug use, Zappa was not only a brilliant rock guitarist but an orchestral composer, innovative filmmaker, music producer, businessman, iconoclast and perceptive political and social commentator. His oeuvre continually amazes: over 60 albums of music from rock to orchestral, in addition to innumerable films, concerts and other accomplishments.
Frank Vincent Zappa (b. 21 Dec 1940, Baltimore, MD) began to play drums at the age of 12, and was playing in R&B groups by high school, switching to guitar at 18. After barely graduating from high school, and then dropping out of junior college (where he met his first wife, Kay Sherman), Zappa worked at such jobs as window dresser, copywriter and door-to-door sales,an. With the money he earned from scoring Run Home, Slow (1965) (written by his high school English teacher, Don Cerveris), Zappa purchased a recording studio and, after concocting an allegedly obscene recording for an undercover policeman, spent ten days in jail. Zappa's diverse range of albums (both with the seminal and protean groups The Mothers of Invention and Zappa; as well as solo releases) are renowned not only for their bravura musicianship and satire, but for offending various groups (usually conservatives, both religious and political). The 200 Motels (1971) soundtrack was deemed too offensive by the Royal Albert Hall, which canceled scheduled concerts in 1975; and the song "Jewish Princess" (1979) led to Jewish calls for Zappa to apologize. These, and such events as Zappa testifying before Congress in 1985 against rock music censorship, being appointed by Czech president Václav Havel as his Cultural Liaison Officer or considering running for US president, have unfortunately been Zappa's only real source of mainstream publicity.
Diagnosed with prostate cancer in 1991, Zappa nonetheless continued working at his Hollywood Hills home, until his death on 4 December 1993. His widow, Gail, and children Dweezil Zappa, Moon Unit Zappa, Ahmet Zappa and Diva Zappa, soon released a statement to the press that simply stated: "Composer Frank Zappa left for his final tour just before 6pm Saturday."- Actor

Regardless of the party secretary's political complicity in these human rights violations, Hu was also instrumental in stabilizing the political situation in Tibet and promoting the economic development of the impoverished and backward region, whereby his practical experience as a hydraulic engineer benefited him. In October 1992, the XIVth CPC Party Congress confirmed Hu as a Central Committee member.
He was also elected to the Politburo, its Standing Committee and the Secretariat of the Central Committee. The following year, the youngest Chinese politician was given the vice chairmanship of the Central Committee's organizing committee and the leadership of the Central Committee's party school. The new director of the party school had studies carried out on the communist and social democratic party history of Europe, which he hoped would provide a way out of the ideological crisis of communism. One of the options identified was to open up the huge empire to private-sector capitalist initiatives, which was pushed forward by President and Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin in the 1990s without any political liberalization.
A trip around the world in 1997 gave Hu the opportunity to, among other things, also present himself to Western diplomacy as a future representative of the Chinese leadership. In March 1998, the Chinese parliament appointed Hu as deputy to President and Communist Party General Secretary Jiang Zemin. In the wake of the resignation of Zemin and other high party officials, the XVI. CCP Party Congress on November 15, 2002 Hu as its new general secretary. On March 15, 2003, the People's Congress elevated the party leader to the position of President, giving Hu the two most powerful positions in the People's Republic of China. The new party leader is seen as a pioneer of a new China, which, in the wake of economic opening, still faces severe democratic deficits at home and the problems of globalization from outside.
In the area of foreign policy, under his leadership the PRC took a clearly negative position against the Iraq war triggered by US and British troops in March 2003. In the spring of 2005, the Chinese government appeared to tolerate violent student and youth protests in their country that were directed against Japan's stance in the Second World War and the current deficits in Japan's coming to terms with the past. At the end of April, Hu Jintao met at a historic meeting in Beijing with the head of the Taiwan Nationalist Party Kuomintang, Lien Chan, which is currently in opposition in the island nation. In September 2005, the Chinese head of state made a state visit to the USA.
In the same month he took part in the UN anniversary summit in New York, which celebrated the 60th anniversary of the world organization. In October 2005, at the Communist Party Congress in Beijing, Jintao addressed for the first time the need for a more "harmonious" course of Chinese economic development, through which the increasing social differences in Chinese society can be addressed society should be balanced. At the end of October, a spectacular summit meeting took place between the North Korean head of government and China's President Jintao: In Pyongyang, both tried to initiate a policy of détente. For the first time in ten years, a Chinese president, Hu Jintao, visited neighboring India at the end of 2006.

Born in New York City to legendary screen star Henry Fonda and Ontario-born New York socialite Frances Seymour Brokaw, Jane Seymour Fonda was destined early to an uncommon and influential life in the limelight. Although she initially showed little inclination to follow her father's trade, she was prompted by Joshua Logan to appear with her father in the 1954 Omaha Community Theatre production of "The Country Girl". Her interest in acting grew after meeting Lee Strasberg in 1958 and joining the Actors Studio. Her screen debut in Tall Story (1960) (directed by Logan) marked the beginning of a highly successful and respected acting career highlighted by two Academy Awards for her performances in Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978), and five Oscar nominations for Best Actress in They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969), Julia (1977), The China Syndrome (1979), The Morning After (1986) and On Golden Pond (1981), which was the only film she made with her father. Her professional success contrasted with her personal life, which was often laden with scandal and controversy. Her appearance in several risqué movies (including Barbarella (1968)) by then-husband Roger Vadim was followed by what was to become her most debated and controversial period: her espousal of anti-establishment causes and especially her anti-war activities during the Vietnam War. Her political involvement continued with fellow activist and husband Tom Hayden in the late 1970s and early 1980s. In the 1980s she started the aerobic exercise craze with the publication of the "Jane Fonda's Workout Book". She and Hayden divorced, and she married broadcasting mogul Ted Turner in 1991.- Actress

Born in Manhattan, New York to Charles E. Martin, prolific cover artist and cartoonist for the New Yorker magazine, and Florence Taylor, an artist and homemaker; Jared began acting at the age of thirteen when his parents gave him the choice of learning to play the piano or acting in the local children theater group. At 14 he attended Putney school where he continued his interest in theater and discovered sports. At Columbia University he initially expected to take part in the athletic programs, but later opted to focus on acting, as doing both took up too much time. His roommate at Columbia was Brian De Palma. While acting in plays and experimental films at Columbia and Sarah Lawrence College he spent a summer apprenticing with Joseph Papp's Shakespeare in the Park. After graduating college Jared tried the newspaper business, taking a job at the New York Times as copy boy and thumbnail book reviewer for the Sunday edition. Missing theater's excitement he left the Times and joined a summer stock company in Cape May, New Jersey; then spent a season with the Boston classical repertory, and eventually rejoined Papp at his new Public Theater in Manhattan, where he played Laertes in the modern rock-disco Hamlet with Martin Sheen and then Cleavon Little in the title role. He continued acting off-Broadway and made an unreleased film that caught the eye of a casting director at Columbia Pictures, who encouraged him to seek a career in Hollywood. He waited for his break for several years working as bartender, truck driver, and landscaper until becoming visible in various roles during the mid 1970s; notably the cult classic 'Westworld', the martial arts thriller 'Men of the Dragon', and the short lived science-fiction series, The Fantastic Journey co-starring Roddy McDowell and Carl Franklin. He is best known for his role as Steven "Dusty" Farlow, son of Clayton Farlow and boyfriend of Sue Ellen Ewing in the mega-hit Dallas. During and after Dallas he alternated between living in Rome starring in European films; and New York where he studied under Lee Strasberg, performed in Broadway's 'Torch Song Trilogy', and did soap opera (One Life to Live). In 1988 he relocated to Toronto to star in the TV version of War of the Worlds as Dr. Harrison Blackwood. After W.O.W. was canceled in 1991 Jared spent the next 2 1/2 years traveling in Africa and China and working on two novels. In 1994 entrepreneur Jeffrey Seder asked him to direct a film for Mayor Ed Rendell's 'Heroes of the Streets' campaign in Philadelphia. During location shooting he and Seder conceived the idea of a film-production themed educational non-profit to serve Philadelphia's inner city and migrant youth populations. Jared moved to Philadelphia and became BPA's Creative Director for the next 15 years; supervising over 2000 students and producing over 250 student films. He personally directed 30 films, garnering awards from Cine Eagle, Intercom, and the Chicago International Film Festival. After retiring BPA in 2010 Jared has begun another career as a fine arts photographer, studying under the painter Michael David. While in Beijing in 1998 he met Chinese classical dancer Yu Wei. They corresponded for two years and married in 2000. Jared has directed a dozen short films for Wei, who tours extensively. They live in Philadelphia's East Falls area and support a large collection of animals including a tribe of freeloading raccoons. Jared's son Christian is an executive at AETN. His two grandchildren, Charles and Emilia Grace, are busy tearing up the block on Baltic Street in Brooklyn. The son of Broadway and film star Zero Mostel, Joshua Mostel is every bit the "heavyweight" that his father was -- perhaps even heavier. A graduate of Brandeis University, Mostel followed his father's sizable footsteps by going on-stage. His first major film appearance was as King Herod -- complete with anachronistic psychedelic costuming, and surrounded by go-go girls -- in Jesus Christ Superstar (1973). Of his three regular assignments on series television, Mostel is probably least proud of his role as Blotto, younger brother of John Belushi's Bluto, in Delta House (1979), the mercifully short-lived TV spin-off of National Lampoon's National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). Conversely, one of Joshua Mostel's best film roles was the fish-peddling Uncle Abe in Woody Allen's Radio Days (1987).- Actress

Born Paul Wilchinsky on December 21, 1922, the son of Sol and Clara Wilchinsky, Paul Winchell grew up to be the most beloved ventriloquist of American children. Ironically, as famous as Paul was, his dummy, Jerry Mahoney, was probably more famous. Not since Edgar Bergen and Charlie McCarthy in the previous two decades had a ventriloquist and his dummy known equal celebrity.
Entering the spotlight on the Edward Bowes "Original Amateur Hour" (1948), he began working soon after in a review show in which Major Bowes would showcase the winners of his radio program. He started his television career on the CBS program The Bigelow Show (1948) in 1948; The Paul Winchell Show (1950), originally called "The Spiedel Show," in 1950; and, finally, the best-known of his shows Winchell-Mahoney Time (1965). With a clubhouse premise, his dummies Jerry Mahoney and Knucklehead Smiff--another of Paul's characters--as the clubhouse leaders, and the music of the bandleader Milton Delugg. A new innovation of Winchell's was to replace the dummy's hands with those of puppeteers who were hidden behind the dummies in a crate. Winch also played many serous dramatic roles on television without his dummy sidekicks.
What may be even more famous is that he created the voice of Tigger for the Walt Disney Company's "Winnie The Pooh" motion-picture series, based on the famous books by A.A. Milne. He played the role behind the scenes until 1999, when he was replaced by Jim Cummings, who also voiced Pooh from the time that Sterling Holloway died. He was also the voice of many other world-famous cartoon characters.
A little-known fact about Winchell is that he was one of the original inventors of an artificial heart--years before the first successful transplant with such of a device--an automobile that runs on battery power, a method for breeding tilapia, and many other inventions that are still around today.- Pedro Maratea was born on 21 December 1912 in Argentina. Rutina Wesley is known for the character Tara Thorton, on the gritty Southern vampire drama, True Blood (2008). She was born in the city most renowned for glitz and glamour, Las Vegas, Nevada and was exposed to the arts at a very early age; in fact entertainment runs through her veins. Her father, Ivery Wheeler, is a noted tap dancer while her mother, Cassandra Wesley, performed on the Vegas strip as a showgirl. Rutina studied dance for years then earned an undergraduate degree in Theatre Performance from the University of Evansville in Indiana. She had the good fortune to be accepted by the acclaimed Julliard School. During Rutina's stint at Julliard, she was fortunate enough to spend a summer at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Fortune was with Rutina again when one of her Julliard classmates, Nelsan Ellis, reconnected with her when he became her co-star on True Blood (2008).
After leaving Julliard, Rutina was cast in the Broadway production of a David Hare play, "The Vertical Hour" opposite Bill Nighy. Rutina followed "The Vertical Hour" with an appearance in the Public Theater production, "In Darfur". Her small role in the hit movie, Hitch (2005), was cut from the completed film but that did not deter her from pursuing her dream. She made another big-screen appearance, this time in the dance melodrama How She Move (2007). She also guest starred on the hit television show Numb3rs (2005); however, her break came when she signed onto the HBO production, True Blood (2008).
True Blood (2008) is adapted from the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire literary series by Charlaine Harris and conceived for the small screen by Alan Ball of American Beauty (1999) and Six Feet Under (2001). Rutina's portrayal of Tara Thornton, a character whose caustic tongue and tough manner conceal her vulnerability, helped make True Blood (2008) a cult hit. The success of True Blood (2008) shocked naysayers when the vampire soap opera became a favorite of both critics and audiences alike. We'll be seeing more of Rutina in 2010 when True Blood (2008) returns for its third season.
