- DirectorEdwin S. PorterStarsWilliam CourtenayFrank DanielsMay IrwinThe Whole Dam Family and The Dam Dog is a popular fad which has been widely advertised by lithographs and souvenir mailing cards, and has recently been made the subject of a sketch in a New York Vaudeville Theatre. The Edison Manufacturing Co., with their usual up-to-date methods, have illustrated this popular subject in a most novel and original way in Motion Pictures. The picture opens with a close view of the individual members of the family. Each goes through a very amusing performance. Mr. I.B. Dam is seized with a severe fit of sneezing. Herself relieves her mind through woman's sole weapon. Jimmy Dam shows how a cigarette should be smoked. Miss U.B. Dam is very proud of the marcel wave in her hair. Annie Dam, in a large picture hat, tries to look very shy and demure. Lizzie Dam chews gum in a most artistic manner. Baby Dam gives a sample of his ability at crying. A family group is seated at dinner, with the Dam Dog seated at the head of the table. Mr. I.B. Dam enters and kicks the Dam Dog out of the chair. The Dam Dog waits until the soup has been served, and then returns and drags the table cloth and all the dishes on to the floor. The final scene is most amusing. Different portions of the Dam Dog's body appear from all directions. They finally arrange themselves in shape, showing a dilapidated looking cur sitting up on his haunches. Presently his tail joins his body by piecemeal, the end having two tin cans tied to it. The tail and tin cans begin to wag in a most comical way. The picture has made the biggest kind of a hit, and is one of the best humorous pictures ever offered.

The little girl playfully runs away and accidentally comes upon the scene of a "holdup," whereupon, unobserved by the footpads, she ties her rope across the passageway through which the robbers must of necessity flee. As anticipated, the robbers, in attempting to escape, trip over the rope and become entangled. In the meantime, our young heroine runs out on the public thoroughfare and gives the alarm, to which two officers respond, whom she leads to the spot, where they capture the "hold-up" men. Through herculean efforts she manipulates the mechanism of the bridge just in the nick of time, thereby saving the life of a poor blind man. The next scene shows three intoxicated men staggering down a street, oblivious to all danger. A train of cars is about to cross the street Our heroine, noticing the deathtrap into which the intoxicated men are about to stagger, runs ahead and closes the gate, thereby impeding their progress and consequently saving them, from injury and possible death. - DirectorAlice GuyThis is the story of a pot of glue and the over interfering boy. Finding a pot of glue, the lad immediately proceeds to apply it to everything in sight. Accordingly, the stairway, lawn seat and a bicycle seat and handles are liberally daubed, so that those coming in contact experience much inconvenience in liberating themselves. "He who laughs last laughs best," can also be applied in this instance, as, in giving vent to his amusement, the lad falls back on to the pot and is unable to liberate himself.

- DirectorÉmile CohlThe nightmare of Émile Cohl's chalk animation is one of unreliable appearances. Fishermen catch fish which eat them whole. Ladders transform into coils which just as suddenly take the form of angry mustachioed soldiers. The human figure at the receiving end of these transmogrifications is subject to all manner of degradations. Genuinely unsettling, THE PUPPET'S NIGHTMARE anticipates Don Hertzfeldt's stick-figure fantasias by a century.
- DirectorGeorges MélièsStarsMlle. BodsonGeorges MélièsThe opium fiend is seen in a den, puffing on this terrible narcotic. He then falls fast asleep and dreams that he is at home with his wife. As he is about to drink the glass passes from his hand mysteriously, sailing through the room and out of the window to the moon, which drinks the beer and the empty glass is returned to its owner by Diana, who rides below on her crescent moon. The opium fiend tries many times to embrace her, but she always disappears from her original position; and once, when he almost gets her, she has changed into a most ugly creature. He hurls at this hideous transformation everything within his reach. The scene then changes, showing the fiend, awake, throwing the different things at the Chinaman attendant of the opium den.

- DirectorÉmile CohlThe opening scene is in a tailor's shop, showing the four assistants more or less in love with their employer's daughter. After some time, the tailor says he will give his daughter to the one who shows himself to be the cleverest. Some very amusing incidents follow. In keen competition we see them all trying to perform the most difficult tasks, in order to win the much-cherished reward. They attempt to sew without thread, and without a needle, and also to sew the wing of a fly. The last man, however, fulfills the desired tasks, and is duly accepted by the daughter. The various feats accomplished during the contest are clever examples of trick photography. The sewing without thread and without needle are both shown greatly magnified. "The man who leaves fancy devices and useless tricks alone, sticking to his trade, wins the bride," is the moral tacked to this story.

- DirectorHarold M. ShawStarsWilliam WadsworthMrs. William BechtelAugustus PhillipsThe Giltons are next-door neighbors to the Biltons. The houses are exactly alike and adjoin each other; the back yards are not even separated by a fence. Gilton is a crabbed old money-maker and childless; his wife has grown submissive through years of continual nagging. The Biltons are a happy family of seven; poverty and scrimping have not soured them. The struggle to maintain his wife and the little ones has left Bilton threadbare, but the loving wife and five pairs of little arms that creep around his neck each morning and night are worth the fight. The fact that old Gilton fumes and fusses about the children sometimes stepping over the line of his back-yard bothers him only insofar as he dislikes discord. When Gilton's dog is poisoned, Bilton is as sorry as though it had been his own, yet old Gilton accuses him of being the poisoner. Even the heartbroken sobs of Bilton's sweet little daughter Cora Cordelia over the death of her canine playfellow fail to convince the crusty old man. When the grocer's boy delivers Gilton's order to Mrs. Bilton and she cooks the dinner thinking her husband sent the things, Gilton is almost ready to commit murder. As Christmas approaches, the Biltons are hard-pressed but give their little store to the children to buy presents, telling them that Santa Claus is too poor to leave them a turkey. On Christmas Eve, old Gilton staggers home in a blizzard, the turkey for Christmas dinner under his arm. On the porch that leads to the twin doors of his house and the Biltons', a terrific gust of wind and snow closes his eyes, and, horror of horrors, he enters the home of the hated neighbor. Blinded and cold, his entire figure snow-covered, he steps into the midst of the Biltons, gathered about the table laden with the cheap presents and listening open-mouthed to Bilton reading "The Night Before Christmas." The children's vision of cheery Santa is rudely interrupted by Gilton's snow-covered figure. To them, he is the real Santa Claus. In a beautiful closing scene, old Gilton's flinty eyes fill with tears and the breach between the families is closed as though the spirit of Santa Claus himself had welded it.

One night while he's at the saloon, Miguel Gomez, a Mexican outlaw for whom $1,000 reward is offered, enters Jim's home and demands food of Mrs. Saunders. Her child, suffering with a severe attack of croup, demands her constant attention and she tells Gomez to help himself. When the child has a severe coughing fit, the alarmed mother asks Miguel to go for a doctor. He consents and hurries off for the nearest one, miles away. As he runs through the foothills, he is met by Saunders, who recognizes him and stops him at pistol-point. Miguel, anxious to get to the doctor, grapples with Jim. They struggle to the edge of a cliff over which Miguel hurls Jim, who falls to the bottom stunned. Miguel jumps upon Jim's horse and hastens on to the doctor, whom he tells of the sick child and induces him to go with him to its relief. After a breakneck ride, they reach Saunders' home just in time to save the child from death. Saunders, who has recovered from his fall, hurries to his home and sees the Mexican through the window. He rushes in and demands his surrender. Jim's wife tells him of the Mexican's generous deed through which their child was saved. Jim hangs his head in shame, and acknowledges that the outlaw is a better man than himself, for had he stayed at home with his wife and child instead of spending his time at the saloon gambling, he would have proven himself more of a man. Mrs. Saunders tells Gomez that he may go unmolested by them for whatever may he his faults, they must acknowledge his goodness of heart in helping them and their child. Tenderly bending over the little girl, he smooths her forehead, she takes his hand in hers and Miguel Gomez is permitted to depart in peace with their blessing.
