- DirectorDavid TwohyStarsBruce GreenwoodDavid CrowMatthew DavisStrange happenings occur on a WW II submarine.
- DirectorSam RaimiStarsBruce CampbellSarah BerryDan HicksAsh Williams, the lone survivor of an earlier onslaught of flesh-possessing spirits, holes up in a cabin with a group of strangers while the demons continue their attack.Very inventive. From the way it's shot to the way it's edited to the physical comedy provided by Bruce Campbell... There's no denying this movie's importance to not only horror comedies, but horror in general. It's much better than its predecessor.
However, still not my thing. I don't think it's a movie that I'll come back to over and over again. But, still it's a movie I'll recommend to both cinephiles and horror fans who for some reason haven't seen this movie yet. - DirectorBrad AndersonStarsDavid CarusoStephen GevedonPaul GuilfoyleTensions rise within an asbestos cleaning crew as they work in an abandoned mental hospital with a horrific past that seems to be coming back.
- DirectorJan de BontStarsLiam NeesonCatherine Zeta-JonesOwen WilsonDr Marrow enlists Theo, Luke and Nell for a study of sleep disorders at the Hill House. As soon as the terrifying truth about the mansion is revealed, everyone is found fighting for their lives.Boring. The only reason I had this on the schedule is because I wanted to watch a horror movie starring Owen Wilson. It was funny to see him in this and to see him being decapitated. The movie was really bland and not nearly as fun as I wanted it to be. At times it reminded me of Stephen King's 1997 mini-series of The Shining, which is a series I have a huge fondness for, but I didn't feel the same way about this.
- DirectorTi WestStarsSara PaxtonPat HealyKelly McGillisDuring the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees determined to reveal the hotel's haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check in for a stay.I didn't get the ending. Ti West has a particular way of telling a story, which I'm totally fine with. However, this movie didn't have that same effect to it as House of the Devil has. It had one REALLY creepy visual though that includes an old man and a flashlight.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsJohnny DeppFrank LangellaLena OlinA book broker discovers his latest find may summon Satan. This does not belong on this list, because it's not a horror movie at all. However, I'm glad that I watched it for this because I have no idea when I would watch it otherwise. I really liked it. The story was always interesting and it had the perfect tone for it to work.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsRyo IshibashiEihi ShiinaTetsu SawakiA widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. The one he fancies is not who she appears to be after all.
- DirectorCharles B. PierceStarsBen JohnsonAndrew PrineDawn WellsThe story of a hooded, berserk killer who terrorized the border town of Texarkana, Arkansas in 1946--leaving no fewer than five murder victims in his wake. He was never caught. Based on one of America's most baffling murder cases. This movie was terrible. The murder scenes were really awkwardly executed, the acting isn't great but the problem is how they were directed to react to the murderer. There were some horrendous day for night footage. I hated the comic relief cop, he was never funny - it turns out that he's the director, which made me hate him even more. The audio is also terrible at parts. You can hear background noises amping up whenever they edit in the dialogue during a scene where the cop talks on his walkie talkie. The only good thing about the movie was Ben Johnson, but it's not worth it just for that.
- DirectorBernard RoseStarsVirginia MadsenXander BerkeleyTony ToddThe Candyman, a murderous soul with a hook for a hand, is accidentally summoned to reality by a skeptic grad student researching the monster's myth.Tony Todd is amazing! Also I noticed that the theme was sampled in a Canibus song.
- DirectorBruce McDonaldStarsStephen McHattieLisa HouleGeorgina ReillyA radio host interprets the possible outbreak of a deadly virus which infects the small Ontario town he is stationed in.Really interesting take on the zombie movie. Well made, well written, well acted, well everything.
- DirectorWilliam Peter BlattyStarsGeorge C. ScottEd FlandersBrad DourifA police lieutenant uncovers more than he bargained for as his investigation of a series of murders, which have all the hallmarks of the deceased Gemini serial killer, leads him to question the patients of a psychiatric ward.Holy sh*t, this was fantastic! I knew that this was better than the second one, but I had no idea this movie was going to be this great. The shot composition is so amazing that I'm surprised William Peter Blatty didn't direct more stuff, but I also understand that his only cinematic work evolves around his already established written work. And just because you have one great movie in you it doesn't mean that your other movies are going to be great. So, in a way I'm glad that he only made two films, but who knows.
The editing of this movie is just a fast paced and intriguing as the first movie. The acting is fantastic, it helps when you have George C. Scott because I think he's one of the greatest actors of all time, but Brad Dourif really stole the show. This is possibly the best acting I've ever seen from him, with the possible exception of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
There were alot of creepy stuff in this movie, but the scene that got me the most was the confession scene. Again, this was mostly thanks to the shot composition and the editing. I'm surprised that so few people are still talking about this movie. - DirectorJennifer KentStarsEssie DavisNoah WisemanDaniel HenshallA single mother and her child fall into a deep well of paranoia when an eerie children's book titled "Mister Babadook" manifests in their home.
- DirectorSteve MinerStarsBetsy PalmerAmy SteelJohn FureyFive years after the events of the first film, a summer camp next to the infamous Camp Crystal Lake is preparing to open, but the legend of Jason is weighing heavy on the proceedings. It's a dumb slasher movie and I knew that going in to it. It wasn't as fun as I wanted it to be, though.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsChristopher ReeveKirstie AlleyLinda KozlowskiA small town's women give birth to unfriendly alien children posing as humans.I see why this movie isn't as known and liked as Carpenter's other movies. It's quite dull. Very little happens and there's not alot of variety in what actually does happen.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDavid EmgeKen ForeeScott H. ReinigerDuring an escalating zombie epidemic, two Philadelphia SWAT team members, a traffic reporter and his TV executive girlfriend seek refuge in a secluded shopping mall.
- DirectorMike FlanaganStarsKaren GillanBrenton ThwaitesKatee SackhoffA recently released inmate from a mental asylum learns from his sister that the murders he was convicted of committing were actually orchestrated by a supernatural entity, the Lasser Glass mirror. It's good, definitely a creative and technically well made movie. The acting is great by everyone - even the children. What kills it from being great is the intentions of the filmmakers. The consensus seems to be that it's all psychological. I don't want to spoil anything, but when it ends you get the idea that only one character is responsible for all this. The problem is that both of them share visions, memories and such. With that it implies that it is indeed supernatural. And if that's the case, then it's not that interesting anymore. Needless to say, it gets really muddled in the third act against the movie's advantage.
Also I didn't find the "ghosts" particularly scary. In a movie like this you need creepy visuals. Horror is extremely subjective so I understand if you disagree, but I just didn't find them scary - not like I did the old man in The Innkeepers, which the more I think about that the more I shiver.
Anyways, it's still a good horror movie worth watching. - DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsRoman PolanskiIsabelle AdjaniMelvyn DouglasA bureaucrat rents a Paris apartment where he finds himself drawn into a rabbit hole of dangerous paranoia.
- DirectorTakashi MiikeStarsKô ShibasakiShin'ichi TsutsumiKazue FukiishiPeople mysteriously start receiving voicemail messages from their future selves, foretelling their deaths. This was the movie I was hoping to be the most terrified by. Unfortunately, I didn't think it was all that scary. Usually even if I don't really like an asian horror movie it still has a couple of scenes that I'll find really creepy - Pulse is a good example. This was a complete flatline, though. The scene I think I may have found scary was too dark visually. I couldn't see what the hell was going on. It's still a good horror movie, the story is pretty interesting. It just under-performed in the horror department.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsBill PullmanCathy TysonZakes MokaeAn anthropologist goes to Haiti after hearing rumors about a drug used by black magic practitioners to turn people into zombies. The worst parts about this movie were the two leads who I didn't find particularly interesting and the ending which dragged a bit. The rest was pretty solid, though. I liked it. My favourite part of the movie was the supporting cast. Zakes Mokae, Paul Winfield and Brent Jennings were all great.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKeith GordonJohn StockwellAlexandra PaulA nerdish boy buys a strange car with an evil mind of its own and his nature starts to change to reflect it.It was pretty good. It has some cool special effects, as to be expected from a Carpenter movie. The acting was alright, Keith Gordon did alot of overacting so I can't say that he did a great job. He seems to be a better director than an actor. The other actors were fine. I'm getter to the lesser Carpenter movies now, so I shouldn't expect these to be as great as The Thing.
- DirectorShin'ya TsukamotoStarsTomorô TaguchiKei FujiwaraNobu KanaokaA businessman accidentally kills The Metal Fetishist, who gets his revenge by slowly turning the man into a grotesque hybrid of flesh and rusty metal. The most f'ked up horror movie I've seen since Possession. This wasn't for me, though. It felt really long even though it was only an hour long.
- DirectorDan O'BannonStarsClu GulagerJames KarenDon CalfaWhen two bumbling employees at a medical supply warehouse accidentally release a deadly gas into the air, the vapors cause the dead to rise again as zombies. This was alot of fun!
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsDee WallacePatrick MacneeDennis DuganAfter a bizarre and near deadly encounter with a serial killer, a television newswoman is sent to a remote mountain resort whose residents may not be what they seem.Time got the best of me and I didn't get a chance to watch this movie or The Entity.
Maybe next year. - DirectorSandor SternStarsDavid HewlettCynthia PrestonTerry O'QuinnIsolated by his strange parents, Leon finds solace in an imaginary friend, which happens to be an anatomy doll from his father's doctor office. Unfortunately, the doll begins to take over Leon's life, and his sister's life as well. You know, there was just something meager about this movie. I don't think it performed well in the horror aspects of it. It's a drama/slight thriller - I wouldn't consider this a horror movie at all. Also, it felt pretty flat in terms of vision and style. There's really nothing impressing about the technical parts of the movie. It's shot really flat, the score is basically non existent, the acting is just fine, although I do like David Hewlett. As soon as certain things were introduced I could pretty much tell exactly what was going to happen. The movie makes it pretty clear what's going on fairly early into the story, rather than having it being ambiguous throughout the whole thing.
It's too bad because you have a really interesting story here, but it's told in the most bland way possible. The movie's not bad, but I can't say that it's good either. - DirectorSidney J. FurieStarsBarbara HersheyRon SilverDavid LabiosaA woman is tormented by an invisible being.
- DirectorAlejandro AmenábarStarsNicole KidmanChristopher EcclestonFionnula FlanaganIn 1945, immediately following the end of Second World War, a woman who lives with her two photosensitive children on her darkened old family estate in the Channel Islands becomes convinced that the home is haunted.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsNeve CampbellCourteney CoxDavid ArquetteA year after the murder of her mother, a teenage girl is terrorized by a masked killer who targets her and her friends by using scary movies as part of a deadly game.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsKurt RussellWilford BrimleyKeith DavidA research team in Antarctica is hunted by a shape-shifting alien that assumes the appearance of its victims.
- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.
