Emmy Award-winning composer Geoff Zanelli is a standout in the film and television scoring industry, garnering accolades and recognition for his diverse musical voice. Zanelli has composed for directors such as Gore Verbinski and Ridley Scott; writer/directors David Koepp, Peter Hedges and David Duchovny; producers Jerry Bruckheimer, Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg; as well as actor/producer Tom Hanks.
Zanelli will score the fifth installment of Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales" coming to theaters in May 2017. "Pirates of the Caribbean" fans have previously heard Zanelli's original music contributions in all four of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" films via his collaborative work with Zimmer.
This marks a return of Zanelli's strong scores for Disney, which began with his breakout score for the fantasy drama "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" starring Jennifer Garner and Joel Edgerton. Zanelli's organic and stirring score for the film also received critical acclaim, including a feature in Variety's Eye on the Oscars issue.
Zanelli recently collaborated with Grammy-award winning Mark Ronson on the co-written score and songs to Lionsgate's "Mortdecai," marking his third time working with writer/director David Koepp; director Jared Hess for the comedy "Masterminds;" and Steve Martin and Edie Brickell to lend string arrangements to the Grammy-award winning album "Love Has Come For You," and follow-up album "So Familiar," which dominated the Bluegrass charts. He is currently writing the score and songs for "Star Citizen: Squadron 42," the most crowd-funded game in history.
In 2006, Zanelli earned his first Emmy after scoring the original music for Steven Spielberg's miniseries "Into The West." With this win, Zanelli became the youngest composer ever to be awarded the 'Outstanding Music Composition for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special (Original Dramatic Score)' accolade. A few years later, Spielberg once again tapped Zanelli to score HBO's "The Pacific," which earned him his second Emmy nomination. Other credits include: DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures' "Disturbia," 20th Century Fox's "Hitman," Lionsgate's "Gamer," DreamWork's "Ghost Town," The Weinstein Company's "Outlander" and Columbia Pictures' "Secret Window" (co-written with Philip Glass) among many others. Additionally, Zanelli co-wrote the song "Don't Make Me Wait" for "Disturbia."
Zanelli has contributed music to many feature films including: Disney's "The Lone Ranger;" the Golden Globe-nominated scores for Warner Bros.' "The Last Samurai" and Touchstone Pictures' "Pearl Harbor;" Paramount Pictures' "Rango," MGM's "Hannibal," Columbia Pictures' "Angels & Demons," DreamWorks' "Antz," "Chicken Run," "Shark Tale," and "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," working alongside composers Hans Zimmer, John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams and Steve Jablonsky.
Zanelli has degrees in Film Scoring and Music Production & Engineering from the prestigious Berklee College of Music, which he attended on scholarship. He is an active alumnus at his alma mater and has participated in Berklee's Curriculum Review Initiative as well as given seminars to students studying composition. During his time at Berklee, Zanelli received the Doug Timm Award in recognition of his film scoring work and the Music Production/Engineering Scholar Award.
A Southern California native, Zanelli began his musical career as a guitar player and songwriter. In 1994, he met Zimmer and was offered a job at Remote Control Productions. Now, Zanelli is known as a versatile composer in his own right, who combines music from different genres and cultures.- Music Department

As Danny Elfman was growing up in the Los Angeles area, he was largely unaware of his talent for composing. It wasn't until the early 1970s that Danny and his older brother Richard Elfman started a musical troupe while in Paris; the group "Mystic Knights of Oingo-Boingo" was created for Richard's directorial debut, Forbidden Zone (1980) (now considered a cult classic by Elfman fans). The group's name went through many incarnations over the years, beginning with "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" and eventually just Oingo Boingo. While continuing to compose eclectic, intelligent rock music for his L.A.-based band (some of which had been used in various film soundtracks, e.g. Weird Science (1985)), Danny formed a friendship with young director Tim Burton, who was then a fan of Oingo Boingo. Danny went on to score the soundtrack of Pee-wee's Big Adventure (1985), Danny's first orchestral film score. The Elfman-Burton partnership continued (most notably through the hugely-successful "Batman" flicks) and opened doors of opportunity for Danny, who has been referred to as "Hollywood's hottest film composer".- Music Department

Mark McKenzie studied composition with renown classical composers Pierre Boulez, Witold Lutoslawski, and Morten Lauridsen among others. After becoming the first Composition graduate at the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire and earning his Masters in Composition at the University of Southern CA, Mark was singled out honored as "The Outstanding USC Doctoral Music Graduate." He was kept on by the USC faculty to teach Music Theory while pursuing his love of film music. McKenzie's first opportunities were orchestrations for movie composers beginning with Academy Award nominated Bruce Broughton on the Steven Spielberg / Barry Levinson film Young Sherlock Holmes. That soundtrack was nominated for a Grammy Award and Mark quickly became the behind the scenes "go to" orchestrator for the elite Hollywood composers such as Academy Award winning Jerry Goldsmith, John Barry, Danny Elfman, Randy Edelman, Alan Silvestri, John Powell, John Williams and others. McKenzie also worked alongside pop artists such as Michael Jackson, Nile Rogers, and Sir Paul McCartney. His credits include blockbuster films such as the Academy Award Winning Dances With Wolves, Good Will Hunting, Men in Black, Nightmare Before Christmas, Spiderman 1 & 2, Mr and Mrs Smith, Star Trek VI,VII and IX, The Patriot, A Few Good Men, Ice Age, Sleepless in Seattle and the hit Bungi game Destiny. Legendary Academy Award winning composer Jerry Goldsmith, in addition to relying on McKenzie to orchestrate his final 7 films, called upon Mark to compose for him when time constraints and health issues required it. One example is a piece called "Prison Uprising" composed for Goldsmith's score to The Last Castle. It can be heard by clicking on The Last Castle Album cover. Goldsmith collaborated closely with Mark repeatedly saying: "Mark is my godsend." Paul McCartney called McKenzie "Brilliant." Director and actor LeVar Burton wrote: "Working with Mark was truly a highlight and one of the best experiences of my career."
As a composer, Mark's film music creates a psychologically intricate inner life to enhance the multi dimensions of characters, giving reference to past or future story elements and heightening the experience of the story. Directors speak of Mark's "unerring instincts to capture the film's emotional core" and "imbue each scene with nuanced music to knit together and propel the story, character and emotions" using words to describe it such as: "beautiful," "timeless," "epic," and "intensely human." Mark is one of the very few composers who both composes and orchestrates every note himself. His latest epic original score (Max and Me) for a film to be premiered at World Youth Days is about Polish priest Maxamilian Kolbe who, through pure compassion, sacrificed his life for another in the Auschwitz concentration camp starvation bunker. It was recorded at Abbey Road Studios with concert violinist Joshua Bell, large orchestra, choir and the London boys choir Libera and will be released on the Sony Classical label.
Variety's "Eye on the Oscars" states: "Mark McKenzie's commanding orchestral prowess puts him among the foremost symphonists in Hollywood." The Los Angeles Times, The Hollywood Reporter, and numerous film music periodicals call his music "strikingly original...soul-stirring...majestic...spiritual...deeply profound...filled with unfathomable beauty and power...some of the most beautiful, lyrical, and emotionally resonant music ever written for film."
Variety writes: "McKenzie is finally grabbing the limelight thanks to an obscure indie Mexican 3D animated spiritual film called The Greatest Miracle (El Gran Milagro)." The Greatest Miracle won the Hollywood Music in Media Award's "Best Indie Score of the year." It was doubly nominated as "Best Score of the Year" and "Best Animated Movie Score of the Year" by the International Film Music Critics Association. The Greatest Miracle was described by Movie Music UK as "...some of the most beautiful lyrical, and emotionally resonant music ever written for film." While the score did not get nominated for an Academy Award, Mark and the score were featured in Variety's "Eye on the Oscars." The Greatest Miracle was repeatedly on "Top Ten Scores of the Year" lists.
Mark's original music has been heard in every corner of the globe. He composed the opening and closing theme music to the longest running and most honored television series in history "The Hallmark Hall of Fame." His original scores such as The Greatest Miracle, The Ultimate Gift, Blizzard, Saving Sarah Cain, The Disappearance of Garcia Lorca, Dr. Jekyll and Ms. Hyde, Frank and Jesse and four Hallmark Hall of Fame films are all available on compact disc and via digital download and streaming through most major soundtrack outlets. Mark's original music has been featured repeatedly on the Academy Awards, underscored the Olympics, performed before the Pope, heard at Disney World, California Adventures, Wimbledon and in countless other venues. His choral work "Gloria," first premiered at the 2000th Crystal Cathedral Hour of Power broadcast has become a perennial Christmas favorite around the USA.
Mark McKenzie is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (Oscars), The Television Academy (Emmy), The Society of Composers and Lyricists, and the BMI performing rights organization.- Composer

Oscar-nominated composer Buck Sanders has carved out a niche as one of Hollywood's top musical experimenters, and as Marco Beltrami's right-hand man on nearly twenty years' worth of prestige films and genre classics. From horror standouts (Resident Evil, The Woman in Black) to modern westerns (3:10 To Yuma, The Homesman), from sci-fi (I, Robot) to mysteries (Knowing), zombies (Warm Bodies, World War Z), and family dramas (Soul Surfer) to heart-clenching war films (The Hurt Locker), he and Beltrami have forged a musical partnership that has won accolades and the loyalty of such filmmakers as Tommy Lee Jones, Wes Craven, James Mangold, Joon-ho Bong, and Roland Joffé. In 2010, Sanders and Beltrami received an Oscar nomination for their spare, searing music for The Hurt Locker, which took their integration of sound effects and narrative atmosphere to a new level.
Sanders grew up in South Carolina, and was drawn to experimental music (and film scores) from an early age. He played guitar in a high school band and continued after moving to Los Angeles, where he studied guitar performance at UCLA. He was working at a laserdisc store in West LA when he met Beltrami, and rapidly went from "helper" to invaluable co-conspirator. Sanders' unique role in the team is bringing a technological wizardry and an insatiable curiosity for manipulating and inventing sounds (as he did on The Homesman -building an enormous, outdoor wind harp and recording piano sounds underwater). "I'm not surprised I gravitated to film music," Sanders says, "because it allows for so much experimentation, but gives the strict, dynamic parameters of a film's personality. For me, giving films unique, handcrafted sounds is just as important to the melodic and harmonic decisions we make during the compositional process."- Composer

Throughout his legendary career, composer John Debney has seen himself in equal demand for holiday classics such as Hocus Pocus and Elf, tentpoles like Iron Man 2, The Jungle Book, and The Greatest Showman, and the powerful epic The Passion of the Christ, for which he received an Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score. Debney's key to success is his immense versatility, composing for comedies (Bruce Almighty, Liar, Liar), action (Predators, The Scorpion King), horror (End of Days, Dream House), romance (Marry Me, Valentine's Day), and family films (Clifford the Big Red Dog, Dora and the Lost City of Gold) with the same confidence and panache. Debney is also known for his work in such films as Princess Diaries 1 & 2, Sin City, Spy Kids, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, No Strings Attached, The Emperor's New Groove, Chicken Little, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Ice Age: Collision Course, Isn't It Romantic, Come Away, Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey, Home Sweet Home Alone, and The Beach Bum.
His more recent projects include Robert Rodriguez's Spy Kids: Armageddon for Netflix, Paramount Pictures' Tom Brady-produced 80 for Brady, Apple+ and Skydance Animation's Luck, Universal's Jennifer Lopez starrer Marry Me, and Disney+'s Hocus Pocus 2.
Upcoming projects include Kevin Costner's 2-part western epic Horizon: An American Saga for New Line Cinemas, Columbia Pictures' animation Garfield starring Chris Pratt, Paramount Pictures' Under the Boardwalk, Netflix's In Your Dreams, and Amazon Prime's Space Cadet.
Born in Glendale, California, Debney studied music composition at the California Institute of the Arts, and afterward began his career orchestrating and composing scores for Walt Disney Studios and various television series. He won his first Emmy Award in 1990 for the main theme for western series The Young Riders, and has since won three additional Emmy Awards and received nominations for a total of seven, with his latest being Disney+'s smash hit Hocus Pocus 2 in 2023. Debney has also worked with industry titan Seth MacFarlane on numerous episodes of his sci-fi space series The Orville, utilizing nearly 100-piece orchestras to record his bombastic adventure scores. His first foray into video game scoring, Sony's 2007 medieval adventure Lair, resulted in a BAFTA nomination and a Best Videogame Score award from The International Film Music Critics Association.
Debney has collaborated with acclaimed directors as diverse as Jon Favreau, Kevin Costner, Robert Rodriguez, David E. Talbert, Harmony Korine, Kat Coiro, Brenda Chapman, Mel Gibson, Peggy Holmes, the late Garry Marshall, Adam Shankman, Kenny Ortega, and the late Ivan Reitman. Grammy Award nominated composer David Joseph Wesley is one of the most prolific composers working in film, TV, and video games today. He has just released an album, "Music To Smuggle By" that was written for Fox's "Firefly Online" video game, based on the groundbreaking TV series. Last August, in collaboration with NASA, Dave released an album written for the 2017 solar eclipse titled "Syzygy." In that same year, he also released "Press Fire to Begin" under the project name "Parsec" as well as a sequel to his 2016 "Pumpkin Patches" album titled "Pumpkin Patches II: Prophet of Darkness." Dave has also worked on the music for Seth MacFarlane's "Family Guy" which allowed him to work with the largest live orchestra in television history. You may have recently heard his music on several network TV, cable and Netflix series such as "Chicago Fire," "Veep," "A Series Of Unfortunate Events," "Santa Clarita Diet," "Limitless" and "Full Frontal with Samantha Bee."
Dave's passion for music began as soon as it first reached his ears. As a young boy, with his parents' piano situated next to the TV, he began to play along with all of his favorite films and TV shows. "Star Wars", "Raiders of the Lost Ark", and "Superman" were just some of the great films that ignited that spark in him. The music from these films stirred something deep inside Dave and fueled his imagination.
Dave started with the piano and added trombone, bass guitar, guitar, upright bass, vocals, drums, and many other instruments throughout elementary school, high school, and college. His thirst for knowledge continues now and he never stops picking up and learning new instruments.
Performing for thousands of people all across the country, Dave has sung and played in numerous groups. From large orchestras in concert halls, to punk and metal bands in dive bars, to bluegrass at tractor pulls, and jazz in nightclubs, he's always exploring the wide range of genres he loves.
Born with a rare genetic eye condition called Retinitis Pigmentosa, Dave's hearing has been greatly enhanced in a way that allows him to hear deeper levels of detail in music than a person with normal vision is able to hear. The condition causes some vision loss but still allows him to see the films, TV series, and video games that he immerses himself in as a fan and a composer. Dave considers his disability to be an enhancement to his life in many ways. The gift of being able to hear music in such rich detail is priceless to him. Scott Healy of Conan O'Brien's Basic Cable Band noticed Dave's extra ability and hired him to produce his albums. Scott calls him, "Best ears in the business." Their collaboration earned a Grammy Award nomination for Scott's most recent album, "Hudson City Suite".
Dave moved to Los Angeles two weeks after graduating from the renowned University of Illinois School of Music with a degree in Music Composition and Film Studies. He took all of the film courses on top of his music studies in order to be able to think like a film and TV director. He believes that being able to step into a director's shoes and getting their perspective is the key to fulfilling the musical vision for their projects.
Above all, Dave is thrilled, grateful, and humbled to be a part of the collaboration between film, TV, video games, and music that has brought so much joy to his life and the lives of others. And he's having a blast.- Composer
