BEST MUSICALS 1930-1939
Hollywood's initial interest in sound movies was to provide audiences in smaller venues the rich musical experience enjoyed by the patrons in metropolitan movie palaces with large, expensive house orchestras. As theaters became wired for sound and "talkies" replaced silent films, the movie musical genre was born. One of the first Oscars awarded best picture was BROADWAY MELODY in 1929.
Musicals flooded theaters during the early 30s and audiences soon tired of the genre due to poor quality and over-used plots.
In 1933, Darryl Zanuck convinced the financially troubled Warner brothers to take a risk on a big-budget musical. "42nd Street" resurrected the musical genre and saved a bankrupt WB becoming the first installment of the depression era's favorite genre--the musical.
The following 20 films, ranked from best to twentieth, saved WB, RKO and Paramount from bankruptcy; and delighted depressed movie audiences in the process.
