German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood's most innovative musical talents. He featured in the music video for The Buggles' single "Video Killed the Radio Star", which became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV (August 1, 1981).
Hans Florian Zimmer was born in Frankfurt am Main, then in West Germany, the son of Brigitte (Weil) and Hans Joachim Zimmer. He entered the world of film music in London during a long collaboration with famed composer and mentor Stanley Myers, which included the film My Beautiful Laundrette (1985). He soon began work on several successful solo projects, including the critically acclaimed A World Apart, and during these years Zimmer pioneered the use of combining old and new musical technologies. Today, this work has earned him the reputation of being the father of integrating the electronic musical world with traditional orchestral arrangements.
A turning point in Zimmer's career came in 1988 when he was asked to score Rain Man for director Barry Levinson. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year and earned Zimmer his first Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Score. The next year, Zimmer composed the score for another Best Picture Oscar recipient, Driving Miss Daisy (1989), starring Jessica Tandy, and Morgan Freeman.
Having already scored two Best Picture winners, in the early 1990s, Zimmer cemented his position as a preeminent talent with the award-winning score for The Lion King (1994). The soundtrack has sold over 15 million copies to date and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score, a Golden Globe, an American Music Award, a Tony, and two Grammy Awards. In total, Zimmer's work has been nominated for 7 Golden Globes, 7 Grammys and seven Oscars for Rain Man (1988), Gladiator (2000), The Lion King (1994), As Good as It Gets (1997), The The Preacher's Wife (1996), The Thin Red Line (1998), The Prince of Egypt (1998), and The Last Samurai (2003).
With his career in full swing, Zimmer was anxious to replicate the mentoring experience he had benefited from under Stanley Myers' guidance. With state-of-the-art technology and a supportive creative environment, Zimmer was able to offer film-scoring opportunities to young composers at his Santa Monica-based musical "think tank." This approach helped launch the careers of such notable composers as Mark Mancina, John Powell, Harry Gregson-Williams, Nick Glennie-Smith, and Klaus Badelt.
In 2000, Zimmer scored the music for Gladiator (2000), for which he received an Oscar nomination, in addition to Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for his epic score. It sold more than three million copies worldwide and spawned a second album Gladiator: More Music From The Motion Picture, released on the Universal Classics/Decca label. Zimmer's other scores that year included Mission: Impossible II (2000), The Road to El Dorado (2000), and An Everlasting Piece (2000), directed by Barry Levinson.
Some of his other impressive scores include Pearl Harbor (2001), The Ring (2002), four films directed by Ridley Scott; Matchstick Men (2003), Hannibal (2001), Black Hawk Down (2001), and Thelma & Louise (1991), Penny Marshall's Riding in Cars with Boys (2001), and A League of Their Own (1992), Tony Scott's True Romance (1993), Tears of the Sun (2003), Ron Howard's Backdraft (1991), Days of Thunder (1990), Smilla's Sense of Snow (1997), and the animated Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron (2002) for which he also co-wrote four of the songs with Bryan Adams, including the Golden Globe nominated Here I Am.
At the 27th annual Flanders International Film Festival, Zimmer performed live for the first time in concert with a 100-piece orchestra and a 100-voice choir. Choosing selections from his impressive body of work, Zimmer performed newly orchestrated concert versions of Gladiator, Mission: Impossible II (2000), Rain Man (1988), The Lion King (1994), and The Thin Red Line (1998). The concert was recorded by Decca and released as a concert album entitled "The Wings Of A Film: The Music Of Hans Zimmer."
In 2003, Zimmer completed his 100th film score for the film The Last Samurai, starring Tom Cruise, for which he received both a Golden Globe and a Broadcast Film Critics nomination. Zimmer then scored Nancy Meyers' comedy Something's Gotta Give (2003), the animated Dreamworks film, Shark Tale (2004) (featuring voices of Will Smith, Renée Zellweger, Robert De Niro, Jack Black, and Martin Scorsese), and Jim Brooks' Spanglish (2004) starring Adam Sandler and Téa Leoni (for which he also received a Golden Globe nomination). His 2005 projects include Paramount's The Weather Man (2005) starring Nicolas Cage, Dreamworks' Madagascar (2005), and the Warner Bros. summer release, Batman Begins (2005).
Zimmer's additional honors and awards include the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review, and the Frederick Loewe Award in 2003 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. He has also received ASCAP's Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement. Hans and his wife live in Los Angeles and he is the father of four children.Music Composer and Producer- Composer

Nobody directs voices like Jamie Thomason. As arguably the most prolific, diverse, acclaimed casting and dialogue director in the animation industry, Thomason has guided an extensive array of literally thousands of actors - well over 100 Academy Award and/or Emmy Award and Tony Award winners (even a couple EGOT's) - through over 100 films and 3,000 episodes of television in his illustrious career spanning three decades. Actors of all walks of performance regularly praise Thomason as one of the finest directors - of voice or otherwise - in the business today. "He's the only director in Hollywood I listen to!" James Woods proclaims. "Does anybody else know you're funnier than me?" Robin Williams once asked Thomason. Anne Bancroft gave him perhaps his greatest compliment when she compared Thomason to the great Elia Kazan, while praising the "artistry" of Thomason's direction, "I've only ever said that to one other director, and that was Kazan!" Tracy Ullman says simply, "He's an absolute genius!" His productions have garnered an impressive world wide gross revenue of over five billion dollars.
And he's just getting started.
You would be hard pressed to sit in a theatre or turn on the television and not see an actor with whom Thomason has worked. The list is as long as it is illustrious - Sir Ian McKellen, Sylvester Stallone, Robin Williams, Emily Blunt, John Krasinski, Uma Thurman, Robert Downey Jr., Sir Kenneth Branagh, Lauren Bacall, Danny DeVito, Sir Ben Kingsley, Anjelica Huston, Whoopi Goldberg, Kevin Kline, James Woods, Edward Norton, Pierce Brosnan, Christian Bale, Bette Midler, James Earl Jones, Jennifer Aniston, Vince Vaughn, Matthew Broderick, William Hurt, Nathan Lane, Kathleen Turner, George Carlin, John Cleese, Will Ferrell, Kelsey Grammer, Patrick Stewart, Sally Field, Glenn Close, Alec Baldwin, Lawrence Fishburne, Demi Moore, Jay Leno, Anne Bancroft... and the list goes on and on... and on.
Thomason created and built the casting department for Disney animation in 1991, setting a new gold standard for casting and dialogue direction in the industry. As one of four key senior executives, he played an integral role in elevating the direct home entertainment business to the pinnacle of profitability at Disney while helming all casting and dialogue direction for over 60 animated theatrical features and feature length direct home entertainment films, as well as thousands of episodes for Walt Disney Television Animation.
Some of Thomason's many career highlights include Miyazaki's "Spirited Away," winning the 2003 Oscar for Best Animated Feature (and was named the second "Best Film of the 21st Century So Far" in 2017 by the New York Times), and the Academy Award nominated "Redux Riding Hood," as well as one Emmy Award won for Disney's Teacher's Pet, in addition to his being nominated seven other times by the Academy. Among his many milestones for Disney are "The Lion King II: Simba's Pride," the top-grossing video premiere of all-time, with a world-wide gross over $465 million; "The Return of Jafar," universally recognized as the monumental first successful step in the rise of the video premiere business with a gross revenue well over $300 million, returning over 100 times its production budget; "Disney's Mickey MouseWorks," the first-ever television series of original animation featuring Mickey Mouse and Disney's famed quintet of characters, and the first Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts in 50 years; the star-studded "Disney's Hercules," noted as the largest single- season voice cast in the history of television animation, with over 150 celebrity guest-stars; and the list goes on. More recently, Thomason was, also, a producer and co-director of the animated feature Animal Crackers (Stallone, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski, Sir Ian McKellen, DeVito, Raven, Patrick Warburton, Gilbert Gottfried, Harvey Fierstein, Wallace Shawn) which debuted July 2020 on Netflix at #2 in the U.S. and in the top 10 of 42 countries spanning the globe and was the #1 animated movie in the world, summer of 2020.
Thomason's remarkable career began at Rollins-Joffe-Morra & Brezner, where he worked with the likes of Woody Allen, David Letterman, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and Martin Short. Thomason's pre-Disney experience also includes directing for both theatre and independent films, and work as an integral part of the casting department at Hanna Barbara. Thomason has, also, taught at USC, UCLA, the SAG Conservatory and AFI.
A graduate of the USC Drama School with duel bachelor's degrees in both Theatre and Philosophy. Jamie lives in Topanga Canyon with his two most prized productions, his two beautiful daughters.Casting and Dialogue Director- Art Department

Jonathan Taylor Thomas was born Jonathan Taylor Weiss on September 8, 1981 in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Claudine (Gonsalves) and Stephen Weiss. He has an older brother, Joel, and has Pennsylvania Dutch (German) and Portuguese ancestry. Growing up, he liked the music group Boyz II Men, and his favorite TV shows were Roseanne (1988) and Grace Under Fire (1993), but he also liked watching CNN news, to keep up to date with current events. One thing that Jonathan does not like is meat. He has been a vegetarian since he was four years old, and he doesn't use products that are tested on animals because he believes that it is wrong to hurt them.
When Jonathan was four years old, his family moved from Bethlehem to Sacramento, California. At the age of seven, Jonathan was working as a model for print advertisements in Sacramento, and over the next few years, he appeared in TV commercials for Kelloggs cereal, Mattel toys and for many other products. By this time, Jonathan was ready for bigger roles, and in 1989, he landed the part of Greg Brady's son Kevin in the TV special The Bradys (1990). In 1990, he landed his biggest role yet, as Randy Taylor on Home Improvement (1991). Jonathan's audition went well, but what really gave him an edge over the other boys was that the casting directors thought that he looked a lot like his TV dad-to-be, Tim Allen.
In 1991, Jonathan's parents divorced. He lived with his mother and his brother. He began work in feature length movies, as the voice of young Simba in Disney's The Lion King (1994), and as Ben Archer in Man of the House (1995) opposite Chevy Chase. Among his other movies are Tom and Huck (1995), The Adventures of Pinocchio (1996), Wild America (1997), and I'll Be Home for Christmas (1998).as Spyro the Dragon (voice)- Actor

With features chiseled in stone, and renowned for playing a long list of historical figures, particularly in Biblical epics, the tall, well-built and ruggedly handsome Charlton Heston was one of Hollywood's top leading men of his prime and remained active in front of movie cameras for over sixty years. As a Hollywood star, he appeared in 100 films over the course of 60 years. He played Moses in the epic film, The Ten Commandments (1956) , for which he received his first Golden Globe Award nomination. He also starred in Touch of Evil (1958) with Orson Welles; Ben-Hur, for which he won the Academy Award for Best Actor (1959); El Cid (1961); and Planet of the Apes (1968). He also starred in the films The Greatest Show on Earth (1952); Secret of the Incas (1954); The Big Country (1958); and The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965). A supporter of Democratic politicians and civil rights in the 1960s, Heston later became a Republican, founding a conservative political action committee and supporting Ronald Reagan. Heston's most famous role in politics came as the five-term president of the National Rifle Association, from 1998 to 2003.
Heston was born John Charles Carter on October 4, 1923, in No Man's Land, Illinois, to Lila (Charlton) and Russell Whitford Carter, who operated a sawmill. He had English and Scottish ancestry, with recent Canadianforebears.
Heston made his feature film debut as the lead character in a 16mm production of Peer Gynt (1941), based on the Henrik Ibsen play. In 1944, Heston enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces. He served for two years as a radio operator and aerial gunner aboard a B-25 Mitchell stationed in the Alaskan Aleutian Islands with the 77th Bombardment Squadron of the Eleventh Air Force. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant. Heston married Northwestern University student Lydia Marie Clarke, who was six months his senior. That same year he joined the military.
Heston played 'Marc Antony' in Julius Caesar (1950), and firmly stamped himself as genuine leading man material with his performance as circus manager 'Brad Braden' in the Cecil B. DeMille spectacular The Greatest Show on Earth (1952), also starring James Stewart and Cornel Wilde. The now very popular actor remained perpetually busy during the 1950s, both on TV and on the silver screen with audience pleasing performances in the steamy thriller The Naked Jungle (1954), as a treasure hunter in Secret of the Incas (1954) and another barn storming performance for Cecil B. DeMille as "Moses" in the blockbuster The Ten Commandments (1956).
Heston delivered further dynamic performances in the oily film noir thriller Touch of Evil (1958), and then alongside Gregory Peck in the western The Big Country (1958) before scoring the role for which he is arguably best known, that of the wronged Jewish prince who seeks his freedom and revenge in the William Wyler directed Ben-Hur (1959). This mammoth Biblical epic running in excess of three and a half hours became the standard by which other large scale productions would be judged, and its superb cast also including Stephen Boyd as the villainous "Massala", English actor Jack Hawkins as the Roman officer "Quintus Arrius", and Australian actor Frank Thring as "Pontius Pilate", all contributed wonderful performances. Never one to rest on his laurels, steely Heston remained the preferred choice of directors to lead the cast in major historical productions and during the 1960s he starred as Spanish legend "Rodrigo Diaz de Vivar" in El Cid (1961), as a US soldier battling hostile Chinese boxers during 55 Days at Peking (1963),played the ill-fated "John the Baptist" in The Greatest Story Ever Told (1965), the masterful painter "Michelangelo" battling Pope Julius II in The Agony and the Ecstasy (1965), and an English general in Khartoum (1966). In 1968, Heston filmed the unusual western Will Penny (1967) about an aging and lonely cowboy befriending a lost woman and her son, which Heston has often referred to as his favorite piece of work on screen. Interestingly, Heston was on the verge of acquiring an entirely new league of fans due to his appearance in four very topical science fiction films (all based on popular novels) painting bleak futures for mankind.
In 1968, Heston starred as time-traveling astronaut "George Taylor", in the terrific Planet of the Apes (1968) with its now legendary conclusion as Heston realizes the true horror of his destination. He returned to reprise the role, albeit primarily as a cameo, alongside fellow astronaut James Franciscus in the slightly inferior sequel Beneath the Planet of the Apes (1970). Next up, Heston again found himself facing the apocalypse in The Omega Man (1971) as the survivor of a germ plague that has wiped out humanity leaving only bands of psychotic lunatics roaming the cities who seek to kill the uninfected Heston. And fourthly, taking its inspiration from the Harry Harrison novel "Make Room!, Make Room!", Heston starred alongside screen legend Edward G. Robinson and Chuck Connors in Soylent Green (1973). During the remainder of the 1970s, Heston appeared in two very popular "disaster movies" contributing lead roles in the far-fetched Airport 1975 (1974), plus in the star-laden Earthquake (1974), filmed in "Sensoround" (low-bass speakers were installed in selected theaters to simulate the earthquake rumblings on screen to movie audiences). He played an evil Cardinal in the lively The Four Musketeers: Milady's Revenge (1974), a mythical US naval officer in the recreation of Midway (1976), also filmed in "Sensoround", an LA cop trying to stop a sniper in Two-Minute Warning (1976) and another US naval officer in the submarine thriller Gray Lady Down (1978). Heston appeared in numerous episodes of the high-rating TV series Dynasty (1981) and The Colbys (1985), before moving onto a mixed bag of projects including TV adaptations of Treasure Island (1990) and A Man for All Seasons (1988), hosting two episodes of the comedy show, Saturday Night Live (1975), starring as the "Good Actor" bringing love struck Mike Myers to tears in Wayne's World 2 (1993), and as the eye patch-wearing boss of intelligence agent Arnold Schwarzenegger in True Lies (1994). He also narrated numerous TV specials and lent his vocal talents to the animated movie Hercules (1997), the family comedy Cats & Dogs (2001) and an animated version of Ben Hur (2003). Heston made an uncredited appearance in the inferior remake of Planet of the Apes (2001), and his last film appearance to date was in the Holocaust-themed drama of My Father (2003).
Heston narrated for highly classified military and Department of Energy instructional films, particularly relating to nuclear weapons, and "for six years Heston [held] the nation's highest security clearance" or Q clearance. The Q clearance is similar to a DoD or Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) clearance of Top Secret.
Heston was married to Lydia Marie Clark Heston since March 1944, and they have two children. His highly entertaining autobiography was released in 1995, titled appropriately enough "Into The Arena". Although often criticized for his strong conservative beliefs and involvement with the NRA, Heston was a strong advocate for civil right many years before it became fashionable, and was a recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, plus the Kennedy Center Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2002, he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and did appear in a film or TV production after 2003. He died in April 2008, a memorable figure in the history of US cinema.as Narrator (voice)- Actor

Boisterous British actor Brian Blessed is known for his hearty, king-sized portrayals on film and television. A giant of a man accompanied by an eloquent wit and booming, operatic voice, Brian was born in 1936 and grew up in the mining village of Goldthorpe in South Yorkshire. His father was a miner who wanted a better life for his son; Brian lost three uncles in the pit. At a young age, he displayed an acute talent for acting in school productions, but also had a penchant for boxing, a direction that would be short-lived.
Working various blue-collar jobs from undertaker's assistant to plasterer, Brian managed to attend the Bristol Old Vic and was off and running. He has lent his musical talents to several productions - from playing "Old Deuteronomy" in "Cats" to "The Baron" in the more recent "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang". In the 1970s, he began appearing more and more on-camera with both classical and contemporary performances. In costumed television movies, he has played "Porthos" in The Three Musketeers (1966) and The Further Adventures of the Musketeers (1967), "Augustus" in I, Claudius (1976), and "Long John Silver" in Return to Treasure Island (1986) and has been a part of various reenactments including Catherine the Great (1995), Lady Chatterley (1993), The Hound of the Baskervilles (1983) and Kidnapped (1995).
On film, he has appeared in robust support in several William Shakespeare adaptations, including Henry V (1989), Much Ado About Nothing (1993), Hamlet (1996), Macbeth (1997) and the title role in King Lear (1999), which he also directed.
More recently, he appeared in Oliver Stone's epic-scale Alexander (2004) and in Kenneth Branagh's film version of William Shakespeare's As You Like It (2006).
In recent years, the octogenarian has been heard more than seen with voice work in video games, documentaries and such animated TV programs as Kika & Bob (2007) (as Bob); The Amazing World of Gumball (2011) (as Santa Claus); Wizards vs. Aliens (2012) (as the Necross King); Henry Hugglemonster (2013) (as Eduardo Enormomonster); and Peppa Pig (2004) as Grampy Rabbit.

Although she was a big voiceover star in the 1990s, her true claim to fame was Trey Parker and Matt Stone's critically acclaimed adult animated television series, South Park (1997), in which she voiced almost all of the female characters. Sharon Marsh, Shelly Marsh, Sheila Brofloski, Wendy Testaberger, and Carol McCormick were only a few of the thousands of voices she performed. Gavin Greenaway is a British Emmy ® award-winning pianist, composer and conductor with an extensive catalog of achievements: conducting over 100 feature film and television soundtracks, composing for major entertainment and cultural events, and producing and songwriting with chart-topping artists.
His career in the music industry began at Sir George Martin's iconic Air Studios on Oxford Street where he assisted on a variety of projects including Elvis Costello's seminal 'Shipbuilding' with the legendary Chet Baker. Following studies at Trinity College of Music, he quickly established himself as an in-demand composer for theatre, film and television.
Commissioned to compose 'something incredible' to accompany the nightly firework display at Disney World's EPCOT, Florida he created the symphonic Reflections of Earth which played there every night for 20 years and went on to win an Emmy® Award. Greenaway contributed music to numerous movies as well as writing and producing songs with Bryan Adams and Trevor Horn for DreamWorks. Additional commissions followed for projects as diverse as the Lighting of the Olympic Cauldron for the Vancouver Winter Olympics, to music for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Celebrations in 2012.
Known for having the 'best ears in the business', Greenaway has fostered long-standing relationships with many of the world's eminent music creators, conducting scores for the likes of Hans Zimmer, James Newton Howard, John Powell, Junkie XL, and Daft Punk, and albums for artists including Andrea Bocelli, George Michael and Sir Paul McCartney. In 2006, he was engaged by Sir Paul McCartney to conduct the world premiere his oratorio Ecce Cor Meum at the Royal Albert Hall in London and again for the US premier at Carnegie Hall in New York.
In recent years, he has been instrumental in bringing some of our best loved soundtracks to the live stage, including world premiere performances of the live-to-picture productions of Interstellar, Independence Day and Casino Royale. From 2018, Greenaway has been the Musical Director for The World of Hans Zimmer with concerts across Europe. Gavin, who Zimmer says he trusts 'more than I trust myself' conducts the large symphony orchestra and presents an immersive multi-media extravaganza.
Solo Releases: Incorporating styles from classical to minimalism alongside more filmic influences, Greenaway's first solo release 'Il Falco Bianco' was widely acclaimed and saw him make his debut in the classical charts as a composer and pianist.
Greenaway's second album 'woven' was released in February 2019 entered the UK classical artist album charts at number 20. This album used a different approach to piano composition using layered recordings of an upright piano, which Greenaway 'prepared' with various fabrics and materials. All of the sounds on the album, from delicate sustains to unusual percussive timbres, are derived directly from the piano. The experimental nature of the modified instrument along with the intimacy of the recording has resulted in a particularly distinctive work. The listener is drawn gently into the world of Woven and spirited away on a remarkable journey: "Gracious and elegant melodies draw you into a world all of its own. Acclaimed Grammy®-nominated choral conductor and Los Angeles Master Chorale (LAMC) Music Director Emeritus Paul Salamunovich, whose artistry touched millions of people around the world through recordings, live performances, college and university clinics, and the numerous film scores on which he conducted and sang, has died at age 86 from multiple complications due to West Nile virus.
The California native and long-time North Hollywood resident was Music Director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale from 1991 to 2001, Director of Choral Music at St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood for 60 years (1949-2009), an esteemed music educator who held academic posts at Mount St. Mary's College and Loyola Marymount University, and an adjunct professor at the USC Thornton School of Music.
His death comes in the midst of the Chorale's 50th Anniversary Season, which opened with a multi-media retrospective concert at Walt Disney Concert Hall highlighting the signature works associated with each of the four music directors who have led the Chorale since its inception in 1964, including for Salamunovich Gregorian chant, works by Maurice Duruflé, Morten Lauridsen's O Magnum Mysterium and the remarkably prescient hymn The Lord Bless You and Keep You.
The New York Times declared the chorus "one of America's top vocal ensembles" during Salamunovich's final season with the Chorale in 2001. A major force in the resurgence of interest in choral music, he championed such leading contemporary composers as Morten Lauridsen, Dominick Argento, Ariel Quintana and Libby Larsen, helping to expand the depth and breadth of the choral music repertoire. His remarkably fruitful collaboration with Lauridsen, in particular, resulted in the Chorale's Grammy®-nominated recording Lux Aeterna and ultimately helped to propel Lauridsen to become the most frequently performed American choral composer in modern history. Salamunovich also guest-conducted throughout the world and prepared choirs for such notable conductors as Igor Stravinsky, Robert Shaw, Bruno Walter, Eugene Ormandy, Alfred Wallenstein, Sir Georg Solti, Zubin Mehta, Carlo Maria Giulini, Valery Gergiev and Simon Rattle. In addition, he conducted choral music on the scores for more than 100 film and television projects, including-The Godfather and ER, and sang on the sound tracks of Judgment at Nuremburg, Universal, 1961, and How the West was Won, MGM, 1962, among many others.
"All of us in the Los Angeles Master Chorale family mourn the loss of Paul Salamunovich and extend loving condolences to the entire Salamunovich extended family," said LAMC President and CEO Terry Knowles. "Paul's impact on the Chorale was long, deep and powerful. Any success our organization enjoys today is rooted in Paul's artistic leadership. We honor his memory, and we will never forget him."
"Paul was one of a handful of conductors who created and shaped the sound of choral music in America," said LAMC Music Director Grant Gershon, who succeeded Salamunovich at the choir's artistic helm in 2001. "As both a teacher and performer he was hugely influential, and his signature choral sound lives on through the many conductors and choirs that he inspired. In particular, his legendary work with LAMC composer in residence Morten Lauridsen is the epitome of a successful composer-conductor relationship, and together they brought international acclaim to the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He was my friend and colleague, and I have always been hugely grateful for his support and advocacy when I took over the reins of the Chorale. We will miss him. He was a giant in the field of choral music."
Salamunovich, a protégé of legendary choral conductor Roger Wagner, has been inexorably tied to the Los Angeles Master Chorale since the beginning, having been a founding member and Assistant Conductor from its inception until 1977, as well as an integral part of its various choral precursors.
Born on June 7, 1927, in Redondo Beach, California, Salamunovich attended St. James Elementary School, where he sang in a boys choir steeped in Gregorian chant, providing an early foundation for his career and nurturing his life-long passion for Gregorian chant. He had the good fortune of watching Wagner conduct his first concert with the Wagner Men and Boys Choir, which was presented at St. James Parish. When Salamunovich was about 13 years old, his family moved to Hollywood. He began singing for Richard Keys Biggs at the Blessed Sacrament Church and formally met Wagner, who invited him to watch his choir rehearse at St. Joseph's Church in downtown Los Angeles. Salamunovich rode the streetcar to downtown by himself on several occasions to observe Wagner, who took note of the regular visitor and invited him to sing with his choir. Following his graduation from Hollywood High School in 1945, Salamunovich enlisted in the Navy, serving in Pearl Harbor after World War II.
He moved back to Los Angeles after completing his enlistment at age 19 and was asked by Wagner to join his newly formed Los Angeles Youth Chorus, which included among its members 13-year old Marilyn Horne and 14-year old Marni Nixon, and which in 1948 evolved into the Roger Wagner Chorale, of which Salamunovich was a founding member. At Wagner's urging, Salamunovich enrolled at Mt. St. Mary's College to study music and then launched a career in choral conducting. Notably, Salamunovich took over Wagner's choir director post at St. Charles Borromeo Church in 1949 when Wagner left to focus on other conducting interests; Salamunovich retained the post for 60 years until his retirement in 2009. Wagner, impressed by Salamunovich's considerable skills, continued to utilize him and tapped him to be Assistant Conductor of the Roger Wagner Chorale from 1953 to 1977.
Then, in 1964, Wagner - with the support of the Los Angeles Junior Chamber of Commerce and local businessmen Z. Wayne Griffin, Harrison A. Price, Donald J. Nores and Marshall A. Rutter - formed another new chorus, the Los Angeles Master Chorale, which became a founding resident company of the Music Center just as construction on its first home, the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, was being completed. Again, Wagner selected Salamunovich, who was a founding member of the independent professional choir, to be its assistant conductor, a position he held until 1977 when Salamunovich resigned to pursue other leading positions he was then being offered.
Although it was expected by many that Salamunovich would succeed Wagner as the Chorale's Music Director, an appointment for which Wagner himself lobbied, Salamunovich's schedule prevented consideration of the possibility and the Board of Directors instead selected Scottish opera conductor John Currie as Wagner's successor. In 1991, after Currie's somewhat turbulent tenure concluded, Salamunovich accepted the position as music director of the Los Angeles Master Chorale. He immediately began rebuilding the Chorale's Wagner era signature "pyramid" choral sound anchored by rich robust bass and capped by shimmering soprano. Having led many of the Chorale's rehearsals while he served as Wagner's assistant, Salamunovich had had an indelible impact on the Chorale's early sound. The press heralded his return and his efforts, stating, "The panache is back; Paul Salamunovich has restored the L.A. Master Chorale to its former glory" (Los Angeles Times).
By the end of Salamunovich's tenure 10 years later in 2001, he was resoundingly lauded for developing the Chorale's "wide dynamic palette" ( Los Angeles Times) and "sterling, precise singing" (Daily Variety). Critics further declared, "For the past decade (the Chorale) has reached new heights under the baton of Music Director Paul Salamunovich" (Pasadena Star-News), and Salamunovich has "sharpened and refined his choral instrument to a virtually unbeatable level" (Los Angeles Times).
But of all of Salamunovich's remarkable accomplishments during his long and productive career, he is most closely associated with the extremely productive relationship he shared with Morten Lauridsen, who served as the Chorale's first composer in residence from 1995 to 2001, and whose critically acclaimed choral "blockbusters" Lux Aeterna, O Magnum Mysterium and Ave Maria, all written for the chorus, are among the works included in the Chorale's 1998 Grammy®-nominated, best-selling recording "Lux Aeterna" conducted by Salamunovich. Under Salamunovich's direction, the lush recording, with its "radiantly beautiful music," (Wall St. Journal) and "affecting emotional pull" (Daily Telegraph), elevated the Master Chorale and Lauridsen to international prominence.
Salamunovich was also noted for his keen interpretations of renowned 20th century French composer Maurice Duruflé's works for choir and orchestra. In particular, they collaborated on a 1967 performance of Duruflé's Requiem, Op. 9, for which Salamunovich prepared the St. Charles Borromeo Choir and the composer conducted. Significantly impressed by Salamunovich's talents during their only time working together, Duruflé kept a picture of the two of them that still hangs in his home in Paris, which is curated by the Duruflé Society.
For his final season with the Chorale in 2000-2001, Salamunovich conducted five concerts, including a rare performance of the Mass in C# Minor by Vierne for double organ and choir with renowned organist Frederick Swann at the First Congregational Church of Los Angeles. The other concerts, held at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, featured choral works by Mozart, Britten, Kodály, Parry, Verdi, Argento, Duruflé, Susa, and Pinkham, among others. The Chorale also gave two joint performance of Bach's B Minor Mass with the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra at UCLA's Royce Hall and the Alex Theatre in Glendale. And for his finale as Music Director, Salamunovich conducted four of his favorite pieces: Verdi's Stabat Mater, Holst's Hymn of Jesus, Neilsen's Hymnus Amoris and, of course, Lauridsen's Lux Aeterna. He managed to accomplish all this while successfully battling lymphoma, diagnosed at the beginning of the season.
Following his retirement, Salamunovich continued his close relationship with the Chorale, regularly attending the chorus's concerts and galas, and returned to the Chorale as a guest conductor in a sold-out concert of some of his favorite choral works during the Chorale's second season in Walt Disney Concert Hall in 2005.
As a conductor and former singer, Salamunovich's musical contributions spanned the spectrum from classical, pop and jazz to folk and new age music with such diverse artists as Stan Kenton, Liz Story and Cirque de Soleil. He conducted countless live performances; sang or conducted on more than 20 recordings, including three with the Los Angeles Master Chorale; helped to shape the lives of thousands of students as a faculty member at Loyola Marymount University for 28 years and at Mt. St. Mary's College for 18; provided training to tens of thousands more around the world as an in-demand clinician; and helped provide spiritual fulfillment to countless others as Music Director of the St. Charles Borromeo Church in North Hollywood. Salamunovich also served as Conductor in Residence at the University of Western Australia in Perth and the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music in Rome.
Salamunovich's other film credits include conducting choral music on the scores of Angels and Demons, First Knight, Air Force One, A.I., Peter Pan, Flatliners and The Sum of All Fears, among many others. Earlier in his career, he sang on the motion picture soundtracks of The Great Imposter, Universal, 1960; The Last Sunset, Universal, 1961;The Spiral Road, Universal, 1963; Captain Newman, M.D., Universal, 1963, Dead Ringer, Warner Bros., 1963;War Lord, Universal, 1965; The Trouble with Angels, Columbia, 1965; Angel in My Pocket, Universal, 1965; and The Last of Sheila, Warner Bros., 1973.
With the choir at St. Charles Borromeo he recorded five albums of sacred music and was featured on Andy Williams' 1969 recording of "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as well as on Williams' 1986 NBC-TV Christmas Eve Special hosted by Henry Mancini and Doc Severinsen. In addition, in 1985 the St. Charles Borromeo Choir was invited by the Papal Church Music Society to tour Europe in conjunction with the 8th International Convention of Sacred Music, which included a private audience with Pope John Paul II in the Vatican Palace. In 1987, the church's choir sang at the City of Los Angeles's official reception for the Pope, and the following year it became the first American choir invited to sing High Mass for the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul at St. Peter's Square in Rome with the Pope presiding. It holds the distinction of being the only parish choir to be so honored.
Among numerous accolades, Salamunovich received a Papal knighthood as a Knight Commander in the Order of St. Gregory the Great from Pope Paul VI in 1969; the "Distinguished Artist Award" from the Music Center of Los Angeles in 2005; the "Lifetime Achievement Award" from the American Chorale Directors Association in 2000; and the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice, known as the "Cross of Honour," the highest medal that can be awarded by the Papacy to the laity in 2013. He was inducted into the Loyola Marymount Faculty Hall of Fame in 2012. He also holds honorary doctorates from Loyola Marymount University and the University of St. Thomas in Minnesota.
Salamunovich is survived by his wife of nearly 64 years, Dottie, sons John of Houston, Texas, Stephen of Seattle, Washington, Joseph of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, and Thomas of Vail, Colorado. He is also survived by his older brother Joseph of Studio City, son-in-law, Gordon Goodman, daughters-in-law Claire, Sheila, Meredith and Nancy Salamunovich, 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
