Life Itself is a close 2nd for me for 2018 (regardless of what the critics thought of it).
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsAnsel ElgortJon BernthalJon HammAfter being coerced into working for a crime boss, a young getaway driver finds himself taking part in a heist doomed to fail.I've seen this film 5+ times already and I like it more every time. Super stylistic and fun. Too bad it missed out on the major Oscar noms thanks to political reasons.
- DirectorBarry JenkinsStarsMahershala AliNaomie HarrisTrevante RhodesA young African-American man grapples with his identity and sexuality while experiencing the everyday struggles of childhood, adolescence, and burgeoning adulthood.Powerful drama that comes across as very genuine thanks to its restraint.
- DirectorGeorge MillerStarsTom HardyCharlize TheronNicholas HoultIn a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a woman rebels against a tyrannical ruler in search for her homeland with the aid of a group of female prisoners, a psychotic worshiper and a drifter named Max.Amazing action film that easily replaces Avengers as my fav of this year so far! My only 9/10 so far for 2015
- DirectorWes AndersonStarsJared GilmanKara HaywardBruce WillisTwo 12-year-olds, who live on an island, fall in love with each other and elope into the wilderness. One of only 10 movies I've rated 10/10 ever on IMDB.
- DirectorDavid O. RussellStarsChristian BaleAmy AdamsBradley CooperA con man, Irving Rosenfeld, along with his seductive partner Sydney Prosser, is forced to work for a wild F.B.I. Agent, Richie DiMaso, who pushes them into a world of Jersey powerbrokers and the Mafia.I didnt expect anything to bump Gravity off of this list, but American Hustle did so easily. Top notch performances, script, music, style...it has it all. I'll have to see how this film is upon repeat viewings. As of now it edges out Gravity for the top spot, but Gravity has remained great after 3 viewings. Update...I've now watched American Hustle a 2nd time and it holds up nicely.
- DirectorDamien ChazelleStarsMiles TellerJ.K. SimmonsMelissa BenoistA promising young drummer enrolls at a cut-throat music conservatory where his dreams of greatness are mentored by an instructor who will stop at nothing to realize a student's potential.I knew it would have to take something really great to knock The Raid 2 off of this list. Whiplash is that great movie. I have several 9s for 2014, but Whiplash is my only 10 of the year.
- DirectorEdgar WrightStarsMichael CeraMary Elizabeth WinsteadKieran CulkinIn a magically realistic version of Toronto, a young man must defeat his new girlfriend's seven evil exes one by one in order to win her heart.Really hard to decide between Scott Pilgrim and Black Swan, but this one has better rewatchability for me.
- DirectorGareth EvansStarsIko UwaisAnanda GeorgeRay SahetapyA S.W.A.T. team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.Lots of good movies to choose from in 2011, but this is my fav. Best action movie ever.
- DirectorNiels Arden OplevStarsMichael NyqvistNoomi RapaceEwa FrölingA journalist is aided by a young female hacker in his search for the killer of a woman who has been dead for forty years. It was between this and the Hangover for me. Both are great, but I think this wins out for me.
- DirectorJavor GardevStarsZachary BaharovTanya IlievaVladimir PenevMoth is freed on parole after spending time in prison on wrongful conviction of murder. Jailed shortly before the Bulgarian communist coup of 1944, he now finds himself in a new and alien world - the totalitarian Sofia of the 60s. His first night of freedom draws the map of a diabolical city full of decaying neighborhoods, gloomy streets and a bizarre parade of characters.Several 9/10s for me to choose from in 2008. Zach and Miri, Gran Torino and Zift are pretty much interchangeable for fav of 2008.
- DirectorGarth JenningsStarsBill MilnerWill PoulterJessica HynesDuring a long English summer in the early 1980s, two schoolboys from differing backgrounds set out to make a film inspired by First Blood (1982).This is the only movie I gave a 9/10 to from 2007, so it earns the top spot. No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood and Superbad are hard to pass up though.
- DirectorKevin SmithStarsBrian O'HalloranJeff AndersonRosario DawsonA calamity at Dante and Randal's shops sends them looking for new horizons - but they ultimately settle at the fast food empire Mooby's.I'm creating this list from newest to oldest and I'm thinking there will be alot of Kevin Smith movies making the list for me. - DirectorGavin HoodStarsPresley ChweneyagaeMothusi MaganoIsrael Matseke-ZuluSix days in the violent life of a young Johannesburg gang leader.Great touching movie that everyone should see. - DirectorAdam McKayStarsWill FerrellChristina ApplegateSteve CarellIn the 1970s, an anchorman's stint as San Diego's top-rated newsreader is challenged when an ambitious newswoman becomes his co-anchor.I guess 2004 was a great year for comedies. At the top of my list are Anchorman, Shaun of the Dead, Napoleon Dynamite and Eurotrip.
- DirectorJean-Pierre JeunetStarsAudrey TautouMathieu KassovitzRufusDespite being caught in her imaginative world, Amelie, a young waitress, decides to help people find happiness. Strong year with other greats like Fellowship of the Ring, Monsters Inc and Visitor Q
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodIan McKellenViggo MortensenWhile Frodo and Sam edge closer to Mordor with the help of the shifty Gollum, the divided fellowship makes a stand against Sauron's new ally, Saruman, and his hordes of Isengard.I prefer Return of the King, but in 2002 there was nothing better than Two Towers

- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsTom CruiseJason RobardsJulianne MooreAn epic mosaic of interrelated characters in search of love, forgiveness and meaning in the San Fernando Valley.Magnolia is another slam dunk for me, but Fight Club was next best that year.
- DirectorJoel CoenEthan CoenStarsJeff BridgesJohn GoodmanJulianne MooreJeff "The Dude" Lebowski, mistaken for a millionaire of the same name, seeks restitution for his ruined rug and enlists his bowling buddies to help get it.I don't feel right not including Buffalo 66 on this list, but The Big Lebowski was better.
- DirectorPaul Thomas AndersonStarsMark WahlbergJulianne MooreBurt ReynoldsBack when sex was safe, pleasure was a business and business was booming, an idealistic porn producer aspires to elevate his craft to an art when he discovers a hot young talent.Another Paul Thomas Anderson masterpiece. Easily the best of the year. Yes, better than Titanic, and I enjoy it more than Life is Beautiful, despite that being an almost perfect movie as well.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsEwan McGregorEwen BremnerJonny Lee MillerRenton, deeply immersed in the Edinburgh drug scene, tries to clean up and get out despite the allure of drugs and the influence of friends.Tough decision between Trainspotting and Fargo, but I'll give the edge to Trainspotting.
- DirectorTerry GilliamStarsBruce WillisMadeleine StoweBrad PittIn a future world devastated by disease, a convict is sent back in time to gather information about the man-made virus that wiped out most of the human population on the planet. One of the best time travel films and easily the best Gilliam film.
- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsJohn TravoltaUma ThurmanSamuel L. JacksonThe lives of two mob hitmen, a boxer, a gangster and his wife, and a pair of diner bandits intertwine in four tales of violence and redemption.I would have though there was no chance of Clerks missing this list, but being in the same year as Pulp Fiction made it happen. Crazy to see Shawshank Redemption and The Usual Suspects not make the list either.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsLiam NeesonRalph FiennesBen KingsleyIn German-occupied Poland during World War II, industrialist Oskar Schindler gradually becomes concerned for his Jewish workforce after witnessing their persecution by the Nazis.Depressing, but great. - DirectorGary TrousdaleKirk WiseStarsPaige O'HaraRobby BensonJesse CortiA prince cursed to spend his days as a hideous monster sets out to regain his humanity by earning a young woman's love.I guess it shows the state of Disney animation these days that it took me this many years to get to Disney.

- DirectorSidney LumetStarsHenry FondaLee J. CobbMartin BalsamThe jury in a New York City murder trial is frustrated by a single member whose skeptical caution forces them to more carefully consider the evidence before jumping to a hasty verdict.I'm sure this is the inspiration for countless movies that came after.
