My After 12:00 AM Creepy Movie List
There are Creepy and Horror movies that I loved to watch as a kid. Some of them scared the bejeezits out of me while some just sent a delightful shiver down my spine and others that were just so awful that I enjoyed how stupid they were. Here's a list of 20 of my favorite Creepy movies from my first 17 years.

- DirectorWilliam FriedkinStarsEllen BurstynMax von SydowLinda BlairWhen a young girl is possessed by a mysterious entity, her mother seeks the help of two Catholic priests to save her life.Of course this is number one on anyone's horror list. This movie had sinners making bee-lines for the nearest confessionals. At the age of ten, I thought there was nothing scarier than a kid with a nasty case of possession.
- DirectorRichard DonnerStarsGregory PeckLee RemickHarvey StephensMysterious deaths surround an American ambassador. Could the child that he is raising actually be the Antichrist? The Devil's own son?At the ripe old age of twelve-going-on-thirteen, this gem of a movie had me paranoid about which kid was walking around with numbers on their scalp. I even wondered what was under my own bushy hair (I didn't find out until years later in military boot camp). This movie also made me terrified of big black dogs.
- DirectorRoman PolanskiStarsMia FarrowJohn CassavetesRuth GordonA young couple trying for a baby moves into an aging, ornate apartment building on Central Park West, where they find themselves surrounded by peculiar neighbors.I didn't see this movie until the age of ten. What amazed me was how the personalities of the supporting characters gradually crawled under my until I was creeped out to no end.
- DirectorJohn NewlandStarsKim DarbyJim HuttonBarbara AndersonA young couple inherits an old mansion inhabited by small demon-like creatures who are determined to make the wife one of their own. This TV movie is just brutal to a young kid. Going into my basement at night was not an option after watching it. I also became leery of chimneys and began listening for the pitter-patter of little feet when the lights went off.
- DirectorGeorge A. RomeroStarsDuane JonesJudith O'DeaKarl HardmanA ragtag group of Pennsylvanians barricade themselves in an old farmhouse to remain safe from a horde of flesh-eating ghouls that are ravaging the Northeast of the United States.I couldn't help but to be reminded of this movie when I went to my first funeral just outside of the Bronx in NY. I remember the headstones and mausoleums seem to run on endlessly into the background and as a kid, I wondered if the occupants were feeling restless enough to take a day stroll.
- DirectorDan CurtisStarsRobert BurtonJohn KarlenGeorge GaynesThree bizarre horror stories, all of which star Karen Black in four different roles playing four tormented women.Let's be honest, do anyone even remember the first two stories in the trilogy? I've seen this movie a hundred times and all I remember is how much that evil little doll freaked me out.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsRoy ScheiderRobert ShawRichard DreyfussWhen a killer shark unleashes chaos on a beach community off Cape Cod, it's up to a local sheriff, a marine biologist, and an old seafarer to hunt the beast down.My family went to Coney Island beach shortly after the premier of this movie. Needless to say, there were not too many folks in the water...and I was no exception.
- DirectorStuart RosenbergStarsJames BrolinMargot KidderRod SteigerNewlyweds and their three children move into a large house where a mass murder was committed. They start to experience strange, inexplicable manifestations which have strong effects on everyone living in or visiting the house.I swear those attic windows were eyes looking directly at me. Knowing at the time that this movie was based on a, quote unquote, "true" story, I had no doubts in my mind at the possibility of my own home wanting me to vacate its interior upon its request.
- DirectorWes CravenStarsSusan LanierRobert HoustonJohn SteadmanOn the way to California, a family has the misfortune to have their car break down in an area closed to the public, and inhabited by violent savages ready to attack.A creepy movie that, for me, was more amusing than scary. Though that creepy bald fellow seem to scare those around me, I couldn't help but to think that I have relatives nearly as weird. This movie became one of my favorite late October flicks.
- DirectorMeir ZarchiStarsCamille KeatonEron TaborRichard PaceAn aspiring writer is repeatedly assaulted, humiliated, and left for dead by four men she systematically hunts down to seek revenge.I was now living in a remote area in deep south Virginia and hid in the back of an older cousin's car to see the premier of this R-rated flick at the local drive-in theater. I was traumatized by the main charater's revenge for a week, who, in the story, was living in a remote country area.
- DirectorJohn BoormanStarsJon VoightBurt ReynoldsNed BeattyIntent on seeing the Cahulawassee River before it's dammed and turned into a lake, outdoor fanatic Lewis Medlock takes his friends on a canoeing trip they'll never forget into the dangerous American back-country.Not a horror movie, but one of the creepiest movies I've ever seen. I actually saw this at a dollar theater that I snuck into when I was sixteen. After that, country folk made me feel a little uneasy.
- DirectorDaniel MannStarsBruce DavisonElsa LanchesterSondra LockeA social misfit uses his only friends, his pet rats, to exact revenge on his tormentors.Rats, rats, and more rats! My favorite movie-I-happen-to-run-across-while-flipping-channels flick. I somehow always manage to catch this movie at the beginning and always on a Friday or Saturday night. It was a great movie for this pre-dating teen.
- DirectorJoe D'AmatoStarsLaura GemserGabriele TintiNieves NavarroPhotojournalist Emanuelle is joined by an anthropologist, two female missionary workers and a treacherous hunter's party in a search for an Amazon cannibal tribe long thought extinct.Billed by a sleazy 42nd Street theater in Manhattan by it's subtitle, "Trap Them And Eat Them", this stupid movie made my skin crawl nearly off the bone. I enjoyed being weirded-out by the hungry cannibal tribesmen, though I guess in retrospect they were only being themselves.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsJack NicholsonShelley DuvallDanny LloydA family heads to an isolated hotel for the winter where a sinister presence influences the father into violence, while his psychic son sees horrific forebodings from both past and future.I read the book first then saw the movie. I liked the movie better. I rank this movie as my number one creepiest, but not horrific, movie since I don't consider it a horror flick. Jack and Shelly are just naturally creepy human beings so they were a wonderful pair in this movie. I was always amused by Scatman Crothers' character's frantic journey to save Redrum Boy only to get popped as soon as he stepped out of the vehicle. Hilarious.
- DirectorPhil KarlsonStarsLee MontgomeryJoseph CampanellaArthur O'ConnellA lonely boy befriends Ben, the leader of a violent swarm of killer rats.Willard's second-in-command. A smart rat with attitude leading a bunch of nasty rats to his unsuspecting victims like carnivorous sheep. For me, it's a delightfully stupid horror movie that always give me goosebumps after seeing the corpse of a grinning rat-gnawed human skeleton.
- DirectorWilliam CrainStarsWilliam MarshallVonetta McGeeDenise NicholasAn 18th-century African prince, turned into a vampire by Dracula, finds himself in modern-day Los Angeles. What can I say? It's one on my favorite horror movies. It a stupid movie but when I was a kid the idea of an afro-american vampire thrilled me. Today, I just laugh whenever I see this movie, but I still find it more entertaining than the "Twilight" sagas.
- DirectorRidley ScottStarsSigourney WeaverTom SkerrittJohn HurtThe crew of a commercial spacecraft encounters a deadly lifeform after investigating a mysterious transmission of unknown origin.Terrifying, creepy, suspensful, and with a hint of grossness. What more could a young teenage boy need? I remember grown men weakly stumbling out of theater right after John Hurt, Jr. popped out...Wussies. I was more creeped out by the sight of Sigourney Weaver in her underwear.
- DirectorJohn CarpenterStarsDonald PleasenceJamie Lee CurtisTony MoranFifteen years after murdering his sister on Halloween night 1963, Michael Myers escapes from a mental hospital and returns to the small town of Haddonfield, Illinois to kill again.Of course this is one of my favorites. For me, no month of October is complete until I watched this three or four times. Sadly, this flick did nothing to help ease my phobia of hospitals
- DirectorSean S. CunninghamStarsBetsy PalmerAdrienne KingJeannine TaylorA group of teenage camp counselors attempt to re-open an abandoned summer camp with a tragic past, but they are stalked by a mysterious, relentless killer.I love camping and cabins. I love the woods though I was born a city boy. Since I love fishing, I love lakes. Imagine some maniac killer running amuck in the very setting you love the most. Love it!!! I didn't stop any of those activities, but I kept looking over my shoulder after that.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsRod TaylorTippi HedrenJessica TandyA wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people.Premiered in the year of my birth, I literally grew up with this movie. It has given me the willies since I was a young boy. I though the scene where the school children are being dive-bombed, clawed, and pecked was the most terrifying thing imaginable for my young psyche. To this day, I find the sight of a flock of birds threatening and consider crows my enemy.
