- DirectorMilos FormanStarsJack NicholsonLouise FletcherMichael BerrymanIn the Fall of 1963, a Korean War veteran and criminal pleads insanity and is admitted to a mental institution, where he rallies up the scared patients against the tyrannical nurse. This is my definition of the perfect movie. Jack Nicholson plays a man who has checked himself into a mental hospital. Upon arriving he starts to stir things up and upset the status quo. But he is quickly hampered by Nurse Rached, played brilliantly by Louise Fletcher. All that Nicholson wants to do is to help the people to get better in his own way. To make them realize that they don't have to be prisoners. But this does not go over well with Nurse Rached and this creates a power battle between the two of them. Nicholson is one of the best actors of our time and this movie helps to cement that fact. But along with that comes a great cast of characters and one of the best villains of all time. There is not a single fault I can find with this movie, it is pure perfection from beginning to end.
- DirectorFrancis Ford CoppolaStarsMarlon BrandoAl PacinoJames CaanThe aging patriarch of an organized crime dynasty transfers control of his clandestine empire to his reluctant son. This is about as close to cinematic perfection as you can come. Francis Ford Coppola's adaption of Mario Puzo's novel is nothing short of brilliant. With amazing performances by the legendary Marlon Brando and Al Pacino. Before The Sopranos this was the movie that gave people a glimpse of the world of the mafia. But it didn't glorify it and at the same time it didn't condemn it either. You become so invested in these characters you want to see what happens next. This is a movie so good that even its sequel is one of the best movies ever made. Just remember to take the gun and leave the canoli.
- DirectorJonathan DemmeStarsJodie FosterAnthony HopkinsScott GlennA young F.B.I. cadet must receive the help of an incarcerated and manipulative cannibal killer to help catch another serial killer, a madman who skins his victims.Hannibal Lecter is easily the best movie villain of all time. Anthony Hopkins plays him to perfection and Jodie Foster gives the best performance of her career. But aside from that it is a great mystery and suspense movie. Jodie Foster is Clarice Starling who has been brought on to interview Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter to help locate the serial killer Buffalo Bill, played by Ted Levine. What ensues is my equivalent of cinematic gold. This movie has it all great characters, a great story, great dialogue and outstanding performances all around. And if you don't like it I'll eat your live with some Fava Beans and a nice Chianti.
- DirectorFrank DarabontStarsTim RobbinsMorgan FreemanBob GuntonOver the course of several years, two convicts form a friendship, seeking consolation and, eventually, redemption through basic compassion. Not that long ago this movie was rated as the best movie to not win an Oscar. I will not argue with that at all. It is unfortunate that it did not win any but that does not diminish how good this movie is. It is more than a movie about a man in prison. It is about struggle, determination and overcoming the odds. Tim Robbins plays a man who is sent to prison for a crime he did not commit. While in there he meets up with Morgan Freeman, who gives an outstanding performance. We then follow him as he gets used to prison life and struggles with the things that happen to people in those cold gray walls. This movie is chocked full of very powerful and emotional scenes. Come the end of the movie it can have even some of the most macho guys in tears.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader. What can you say about Star Wars? It is the movie that changed the industry. This movie started the phenomenon of a movie being everywhere. After it came out you couldn't go into any store without seeing something Star Wars related. Now aside from that it is one of, if not, the best sci-fi movie ever made. You have got the classic story of a young boy thrust into being the hero and fighting against a seemingly unstoppable enemy. Then along with that you've got one of the best movie villains of all time in Darth Vader. It also revolutionized movie special effects. This movie did things that were never seen before and changed the way movies were made. The fan base that this movie and it's universe has generated is unprecedented and when the movies were remastered some loved it and some hated it. That just shows you that even 30 years after the fact this movie can still make an impact and Han will always shoot first.
- DirectorStanley KubrickStarsMatthew ModineR. Lee ErmeyVincent D'OnofrioA pragmatic U.S. Marine observes the dehumanizing effects the Vietnam War has on his fellow recruits from their brutal boot camp training to the bloody street fighting in Hue.To me this is my favorite of Stanley Kubrick's movies. Some people might say that 2001 or The Shining is better but this one takes my top spot. The movie is divided into two parts. First there is the boot camp section that is dominated by the brilliant performances of R. Lee Ermey as the drill instructor and Vincent DiNofrio as Private Pyle. Then the second part of the movie is the war itself. You follow Private Joker, played by Matthew Modine, as he works as an Army reporter. The movie is full of dark humor and some of the best dialogue ever written. This is easily one of the best war movies ever made and it was Kubrick at the height of his form.
- DirectorPeter JacksonStarsElijah WoodViggo MortensenIan McKellenGandalf and Aragorn lead the World of Men against Sauron's army to draw his gaze from Frodo and Sam as they approach Mount Doom with the One Ring.It was hard to pick just one movie from the Lord of the Rings trilogy. But picking just one Return of the King is the best of the series. It does a great job of bringing an end to the epic journey that began in Fellowship of the Ring. At this point in the series there was so much to wrap up but Peter Jackson did an outstanding job of bringing everything to a satisfactory conclusion. Now probably the biggest achievement of this movie is the way it mixes special effects and storytelling. Usually special effects just make a movie flashy and expensive but in this case they blended perfectly to transport you into Tolkien's world. This was really the best way to end one of the greatest movie trilogies of all time.
- DirectorSteven SpielbergStarsHarrison FordKaren AllenPaul FreemanIn 1936, archaeologist and adventurer Indiana Jones is hired by the U.S. government to find the Ark of the Covenant before the Nazis can obtain its awesome powers. What else can you say other than Indiana Jones? This is the height of the action adventure genre and it has so many memorable sequences. From the beginning where Indy is running away from the giant bolder to the final sequence where they open the ark and everyone's faces melt off. Indiana Jones is one of the best movie heroes ever put to the screen. The film has great action scenes as well as a great sense of humor. The movie is accompanied by John William's incredible score that really fits the character and helps to heighten the action. This is the best of the Indiana Jones movies and really shows Spielberg at his best.
- DirectorJames CameronStarsLeonardo DiCaprioKate WinsletBilly ZaneA seventeen-year-old aristocrat falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic. This movie is James Cameron's masterpiece. Yes he did some great movies in the past but to me this is the best of all of them. Cameron did a spot-on job of recreating the doomed ocean liner and you really feel like you have been transported back to 1912. The movie is really about class struggles and it does a very good job of portraying it. Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who is traveling in steerage falls in love with Rose, played by Kate Winslet even though everything about society says that they shouldn't. Then the climax of the movie comes with the ship hits the iceberg. What happens then is one of the most dramatic movie sequences of all time. The combination of these two parts really helps to bring the whole thing together and make amazingly epic movie.
- DirectorRob ReinerStarsCary ElwesMandy PatinkinRobin WrightA bedridden boy's grandfather reads him the story of a farmboy-turned-pirate who encounters numerous obstacles, enemies and allies in his quest to be reunited with his true love.To me this is easily the greatest comedy ever made. It's got very memorable characters and some of the best lines in movie history. It was directed by Rob Reiner and based on the book originally written by S. Morgenstern. Everything about this movie is classic from Inigo Montoya, played by Mandy Patinkin, to Fezzik, played by Andre the Giant, Vizzini, played by Wallace Shawn and Miracle Max played by Billy Crystal. From beginning to end this is a fun romp of a movie that you can watch over and over again.
