- DirectorBilly WilderStarsGary CooperAudrey HepburnMaurice ChevalierA middle-aged playboy becomes fascinated by the daughter of a private detective who has been hired to entrap him with the wife of a client.charming film. great chemistry between cooper and hepburn. maurice chevalier is enchantingly marvelous. fascinating movie and the theme song "fascination" still haunts me. watched it three times in two days.
Greatness of billy wilder in each and every shot. a must if you love cinema. - DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsLaurence OlivierJoan FontaineGeorge SandersA self-conscious woman juggles adjusting to her new role as an aristocrat's wife and avoiding being intimidated by his first wife's spectral presence. They don't make movies like this any more. One of Hitchcock's best.
Laurence Olivier simply dominates. I would say Hitchcock was a born
genius. - DirectorBilly WilderStarsMarilyn MonroeTom EwellEvelyn KeyesWhen his family goes away for the summer, a hitherto faithful husband with an overactive imagination is tempted by a beautiful neighbor. One of the funniest movies i have seen. Tow Ewell gives an utterly delicious performance. Added bonus is the luscious Marilyn Monroe. Great combination. It seems wilder wanted walter mathau for this role. But to me this is tom ewell's best performance.
- DirectorAlfred HitchcockStarsCary GrantIngrid BergmanClaude RainsThe daughter of a convicted German spy is asked by American agents to gather information on a ring of German scientists in South America. How far will she have to go to ingratiate herself with them?Perfect cinema. If you love cinema and if you have not seen this gem, don't waste any time, watch it before it is too late for you to comprehend movies. That is before your faculties give up on you. This is a must watch before you die. This has Hitchcock touch in just about every gorgeously shot black and white frame. And then the magic of the three main actors, bergman, grant and rains.
- DirectorGeorge StevensStarsAlan LaddJean ArthurVan HeflinAn ex-gunfighter defends homesteaders in 1889 Wyoming.Utterly hypnotic treatment. like slowly drinking vintage wine. hard to describe. brilliance of george seven's direction is most evident. Jack Palance, what an actor. He makes evil glamorous. If you have any evil in you, you would want to be like him. great cinema.
- DirectorMark RobsonStarsLana TurnerLee PhilipsLloyd NolanA peaceful New England town hides secrets and scandals. This movie made me want to migrate to America. I loved those small towns of America. But that is a thing of the past.
- DirectorMervyn LeRoyStarsJean SebergHonor BlackmanSean GarrisonA psychiatrist's wife thinks her French Riviera lover is dead.Romance and Mystery in one package. Set in France with Jean Seberg in the lead role is a charming movie.
- DirectorMichael CurtizStarsHumphrey BogartIngrid BergmanPaul HenreidA cynical expatriate American cafe owner struggles to decide whether or not to help his former lover and her fugitive husband escape the Nazis in French Morocco.Bogart and Ingrid Bergman pairing in this 1942 film is most romantic. There is also claude rains in the mix.
- DirectorJohn HustonStarsHumphrey BogartKatharine HepburnRobert MorleyIn WWI East Africa, a gin-swilling Canadian riverboat captain is persuaded by a strait-laced English missionary to undertake a trip up a treacherous river and use his boat to attack a German gunship.Bogart gives a oscar worthy performance in this. But brando deserved the oscar that year for A Street Car Named Desire. This is a very nice movie with Kate.
- DirectorHoward HawksStarsHumphrey BogartLauren BacallJohn RidgelyPrivate detective Philip Marlowe is hired by a wealthy family. Before the complex case is over, he's seen murder, blackmail and what might be love.Bogart and Lauren Bacall magic continues in this crime drama. Never a dull moment.
- DirectorWilliam WylerStarsGregory PeckAudrey HepburnEddie AlbertA bored and sheltered princess escapes her guardians and falls in love with an American newsman in Rome. Most Romantic. Nice pairing of gregory peck and first time Audry Hepburn. she won an oscar for this well deserved performance.A very
refreshing charming movie. You never get tired of watching this. Surprised that William Wyler directed this, because he is not known for comedies. So that speaks highly of his range as a director. - DirectorMel BrooksStarsGene WilderMadeline KahnMarty FeldmanAn American grandson of the infamous scientist, struggling to prove that his grandfather was not as insane as people believe, is invited to Transylvania, where he discovers the process that reanimates a dead body.If there is a comedy that you must watch before dying, this is it.
- DirectorRolf SchübelStarsJoachim KrólErika MarozsánStefano DionisiFollows three men who are in love with a beautiful waitress during World War II: an intellectual restaurant owner, a mysterious musician, and an erratic businessman. This is one of my all time favorites along with others. That means i can watch it any number of times and will not get tired. First time when i watched it had no sub titles, but it still kept me glued. That speaks highly of the imagery and the actors and the background score. As a result of watching this i visited budapest in 2005.
- DirectorJoshua LoganStarsWilliam HoldenKim NovakBetty FieldEmotions are ignited among the complacent townsfolk when a handsome drifter arrives in a small Kansas community on the morning of the Labor Day picnic. All i can say is Kim Novak. I am a sucker for any movie with Kim Novak.
She has a hypnotic screen presence which can seduce weaklings like me.
I also adored her in Vertigo. Hitchcock knew how to photograph her and some of the visual images of her in Vertigo are out of this world. Moments to live for. One scene in vertigo is permanently etched in my memory. Not dramatic but it is very sublime. Credit to Hitchcock. - DirectorGeorge StevensStarsMontgomery CliftElizabeth TaylorShelley WintersA poor boy gets a job working for his rich uncle and ends up falling in love with two women.Clift and liz create screen magic. some of the shot compositions in this movie are seductively charming and hypnotic.
- DirectorFred ZinnemannStarsBurt LancasterMontgomery CliftDeborah KerrAt a U.S. Army base in 1941 Hawaii, a private is cruelly punished for not boxing on his unit's team, while his commanding officer's wife and top aide begin a tentative affair. My affair with cinema started with this movie in 1954. Still remember the opening scene where Montgomery Clift slowly walks inside the barracks. And the sizzling kiss on the beach.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsMarlon BrandoJean PetersAnthony QuinnThe story of Mexican revolutionary Emiliano Zapata, who led a rebellion against the corrupt, oppressive dictatorship of President Porfirio Díaz in the early 20th century.hooked on to the magic of brando. Noticed Jean Peters earthy charm, have been a fan of hers since then. I was only ten and my brother narrated the story and the significance of the white horse. This was the golden age of cinema. Brando's encounter with the governor initially impressed me very much.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsVivien LeighMarlon BrandoKim HunterDisturbed Blanche DuBois moves in with her sister in New Orleans and is tormented by her brutish brother-in-law while her reality crumbles around her.I very much liked brando's astonishing screen presence and his ability to sink into his role with such ease. I wonder if elia kazan had anything to do with this.
- DirectorElia KazanStarsMarlon BrandoKarl MaldenLee J. CobbAn ex-prize fighter turned New Jersey longshoreman struggles to stand up to his corrupt union bosses, including his older brother, as he starts to connect with the grieving sister of one of the syndicate's victims.Another brando masterpiece with elia kazan.
