- Commissioner Martin Beck and his eccentric partner Gunvald Larsson investigate murders in Stockholm, Sweden.
- Reine lies to his mother about going to summer camp, instead staying unsupervised in Stockholm. The movie depicts his adventures and encounters around the city during summer break while his oblivious mother works.
- Kaj, Lennart and Robert are 30-somethings who goes out to dance every weekend. At one dance they meet Inger, whom Kaj falls in love with. Kaj has some friends who are playing in a band. The drummer Tommy is known for being the local Casanova, seducing women when ever he gets the chance. It doesn't take him long to have an affair with Inger, behind Kaj's back.

Suddenly he finds himself contacting friends and relatives he left behind a long time ago and the people Rolf meet lead him to events that forever changes his life.

When Europe comes to Katrineholm to do a concert, Peter finds out that his girlfriend Nina had a relationship with the band's vocalist Joey Tempest many years ago. Peter thinks Nina wants to get back together with Joey, so he gets very jealous, gets drunk at the concert and goes berserk. The safety officer Frasse makes Peter realize he should pull himself together and go sort things out with Nina.

Gunvald sets out on his own to find the woman's murderer, with Säpo on his heels. Martin Beck is ordered to arrest Gunvald and his loyalty to his colleague is now put to the test.

- The 4042 has been growing rapidly, and transferred itself to Jens' brain, as it seems. The action moves from Stockholm to Esrange, the space center in the north of Sweden. A rocket is to be launched.
