- A henpecked New Jersey grocer makes plans to move to California to grow oranges, despite the resistance of his overbearing wife.

She meets the major at a dinner and they agree to meet later, but before she can keep the date, she is courted by a young naval officer named Karl. Falling in love, she ignores her spying assignment, but knows that she can never tell her new love about her life. When Karl has a chance to go on a heroic mission, Elsa sends him away with a "Dear Karl" letter. However, the paths of these three people cross again and she decides what she must do.
- Ex-criminals Mendoza and Clare Conway are butler and maid in the home of wealthy Christopher Darley and are engaged. John Stover, who recognizes Peter as a former convict, informs Darley and tries to embroil him in a fraudulent stock scheme, but he refuses. When Stover obtains a proxy empowering him to outvote Darley, Peter contrives a general holdup of guests at a party, steals the proxy, and burns it. After escaping from the house, the couple disclose their motive to Darley; he then presents them with a country house as a wedding present.

- George Dryden, an atheist since (as a boy) he saw his mother killed by lightning, becomes a prominent surgeon and marries a woman who soon dies of heart disease. She becomes ill, suffering an emotional collapse. The doctor exhausts his knowledge trying to save her and finally, in desperation, he calls upon God. The girl is miraculously cured and George Dryden's faith is restored.

Meanwhile, Matthew is being set up for a patsy by a gang of German secret agents led by Van Bierman who are planning to blow up an airplane factory.

After a series of tragedies and deaths of his loved ones, caused by Bazaine, Armstrong is in the depths of despair when a higher power shows him a glimmer of hope among his misery.
- International crook Michael Lanyard, alias "The Lone Wolf," offers to recover stolen plans for a defense apparatus in exchange for asylum in the United States. He meets Lucy Shannon, a member of the gang, called "The Pack," suspected of having the stolen plans. Lucy assists Lanyard in obtaining the plans and later helps him escape from the other members of the gang. Together, in a daring airplane ride, they deliver the plans. Lanyard learns that Lucy is a Secret Service agent.
