- Attorney Jill Coleridge, sister to Faith and Roger, hears about Frank's hospitalization. Mary finds Jack's presence comforting, and he promises to see her again. Jill goes to the hospital and is devastated to find him in critical condition. She recalls their great love for one another. Meanwhile, a nervous Delia wonders if Frank might ever regain consciousness and tell what happened to him.
- Frank and Jillian realize they must end their relationship after Delia helps out Frank with the political bosses.
- Delia attempts to find out from Pat what Bob has uncovered in his investigation of Frank's fall. Mary finds out more about Jack.An upset Faith awakens after drinking too much then accuses Bucky of trying to take advantage of her. Mary has a sixth sense that Frank desperately needs her and insists they go to the hospital immediately. Meanwhile, Pat stops by Frank's room to check on him and finds him gasping for air.
- Frank's unimpressed by Delia's tale of seeking forgiveness from Father McShane and wanting to start anew. Seneca questions Bucky about Nell. Nick makes an unusual overture to Delia. Seneca plays the outraged husband, demanding that Ed keep away from Nell. Delia goes up against the hospital to get Frank's missing money back then also gets the upper hand against Jill.
- Frank insists that Delia drop the claim to get reimbursement for his missing money. Ed reacts to the announcement naming Seneca as the new chief of the neurology department. Faith attempts to lift Mary's spirits which are down because she misses Jack but is also furious about his article. Frank asks Mary to believe in him.
- Mary scrambles to save Frank's campaign when his party plans to replace him. Ed cautions Seneca that he won't step aside where Nell is concerned. Nick theorizes about the hold Roger has over Frank. Roger's deference to Seneca irritates Faith. Mary wrangles a short extension for Frank's campaign. Bob tosses Jack out when he attempts to talk with Mary.
- Delia throws a monkey wrench in Mary's date with Roger by tipping off Jack to their plans. Roger and Mary enjoy their date, but when an aggressive Jack interrupts them, their connection is lost. Ed confronts Nell who admits that she has a brain aneurysm that could burst at any moment. Ed promises to help Nell through her ordeal.
- An incapacitated Nell rejects Seneca's help, turning to Ed instead. Nick instigates a scheme to find out Frank's secret by making Roger even more indebted. Delia volunteers to a cable TV interview for Frank's campaign, but Jill attempts to prevent it.
- Faith and Ed continue to be at odds. A suspicious Jack confronts Delia about Frank's unfaithfulness, and after making him promise not to out her, she admits it's true. Later Jill is shocked to the core by Jack, who tells her that he knows about her extramarital affair with Frank.
- Frank and Jack reach an agreement that Mary deserves to know the truth. Seneca's outraged over Ed's medical treatment of Nell. Frank confesses his affair with Jill to Mary. Seneca seeks another covert avenue to help Nell through her illness.

- Delia disables Frank's new electric wheelchair moments before the rally is to begin. Faith arranges to be with Pat at Frank's rally, while Jack supports Mary. Roger issues a legal threat over Ed's selection of Clem as a surgical assistant for Nell's procedure. Frank is horrified when his wheelchair won't move in front of his live audience, but through will and determination, he manages to succeed.
- Mary and Jack have it out with Johnny. While Frank and Jill are lonely without one another, Delia steps up her plan to hang on to Frank. Mary and Johnny teach a very tenuous understanding, Herbie assaults Roger in an attempt to force him to tell Nick Frank's secret.
- Election Day has arrived, and as everyone gathers at the bar, news reports trickle in that show Frank losing the election. Maeve and Mary have a heart-to-heart talk about Mary's romantic interest in Jack. Maeve attempts to prevent tension between everyone and Jack. Frank's arrival brightens the negative atmosphere, while ABC News is ready to declare election results.
- ABC News calls the election in Frank's favor, leading to a joyous celebration in the bar. Delia seethes with jealousy as Frank gives campaign manager Jill a chaste victory kiss. Bucky persuades Nell to join him at Ryan's for the celebration, though she dismisses a slight headache. Jack notes Delia's sullenness in stark contrast to Fran's elation, but Mary asks him not to spoil the evening. Kenneth watches intently as Faith kisses Pat. Frank's opponent concedes the election. Nell is seized by an excruciating headache and collapses during the party.
- Nell is rushed to Riverside, where a spinal tap reveals that one of her aneurysms is leaking. Kenneth introduces himself to Pat and Faith in the emergency room, and he uses Nell's illness as a pretext to chat with Faith. Seneca remembers happier times with his wife. After Nell's x-rays show that her operable aneurysm is the one leaking, Seneca and Clem prepare for surgery.
- Mary expresses her complicated feelings about Frank with Jack. Pat gives Faith all of the control in their growing relationship, allowing her to decide how far they go and when, but just as she begins to kiss him passionately, Bucky arrives. Faith encourages a frightened Bucky as Nell undergoes emergency surgery. Jack and Mary makes wishes on paper ashes, and Jack carries Mary to his bed.
- The stressful surgery on Nell continues. After losing her virginity to Jack, a deliriously happy Mary admits that she's jealous of Jack's past lovers, while Jack confesses that he's astonished at how happy he is. When the surgery ends, Clem isn't convinced of its success, but Seneca thanks him for a job well done. Mary realizes that it's the middle of the night, and she has to phone her parents to let them know she's safe. Seneca recalls a time when Nell was afraid of growing old. Nell attempts to open her eyes.
