- On 8th October 1941, Stalin issued a secret order forming a female aviation unit. Known later as the 46th "Taman" Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, a unit like this had never existed before. Their operational record began at the Salsk Steppes and the Don battles and ended in Nazi Germany. Flying PO-2 night bombers or 'mules', these brave female pilots flew harassment bombing and precision bombing missions, which successfully destroyed the enemy's river crossings, fortifications, machinery and manpower. The regiment flew over 23,000 sorties and is said to have dropped 3,000 tons of bombs. The most highly decorated female unit in the Soviet Air Force, each pilot had flown over 1000 missions by the end of the war with twenty-three pilots awarded the Hero of the Soviet Union. Fighting with equal bravery and skill as their male counterparts earned them the name 'Nachthexen' (Night Witches) by the Germans.

- In the late 1980s, Pasha Karitonov, a young musician from Odessa, returns home from an eight-month trip to India working on board a merchant ship. He has been trying to earn enough money to buy his own flat, a condition imposed by the father of his girlfriend, Lilia before they can get married. However, when exchanging his currency one day, Pasha encounters a young swindler girl, who steals all his money. Pasha realises that this puts paid to the wedding plans, so the lovers decide to flee to Crimea.
- Nina Nikitina, who works for a translation agency, is also busy with preparations for her upcoming wedding. But from time to time and in total secrecy, she leaves her office to watch, from a careful and discreet distance, an 8-year-old girl called Varia. In fact little Varia is Nina's daughter whom she rejected after giving birth to her. Nina cannot forgive herself for this cruel decision, but gaining custody of Varia now is impossible, as the girl has two wonderful adoptive parents, Masha and Andrey Gromov. To be closer to her daughter, Nina decides to leave her job and enter the Gromov household posing as a nanny and child psychologist.

When he wakes up the following morning, Kirill finds himself in a luxurious mansion. He is now the owner of a large and successful architectural firm and married to Victoria, he is a man of means and influence. Kirill is happy. His life is full of pleasure, and it appears that his dreams and ambitions have at last been realised. But will he want to return to his previous life, and will he be able to cope when faced with disappointment and unfulfilled ambition once more?
- Maksim, a young and promising ethnographer and postgraduate student, arrives in the village of Rusalino to collect old folklore songs, tales and traditions for his papers in 1993. When Ulyana shows up at Lera's house, Lera's husband, friends and colleagues take her for Lera. Will Ulyana be able to 'become' her twin sister and play the role perfectly?
- Turning his hand to a bit of 'serious business', Goshka, a swindler and small-time crook, steals a priceless violin only to have it stolen from him by another thief a few days later. Vera, the associate investigator working in the Prosecutor's Office under Colonel Guzin, is assigned to the case, however, she is fired almost immediately after an argument with her boss. Although Gosha no longer has the violin, he is still the main suspect and, realizing he must come clean, he goes to Vera's flat to give himself up and to offer his help with the investigation. A delightful friendship and collaboration begins between the robbed thief and the former investigator, hell-bent on avenging herself on her former boss. The pair go on to handle many other cases - some dangerous and some downright hilarious but all with astonishingly successful results.

In the meantime, Masha did not expect that her new relationship that began as a joke will soon develop into true love. Fortune, however, smiles on Igor when his loathed rival suddenly disappears right before the wedding. Now it seems that nothing can stand in the way of Igor starting a new life with Masha after all. This could have been the end of the story, if it were not for a chance photograph taken by a guest at their wedding. After a few years that unfortunate picture will turn the heroes' lives upside down.

- A group of operational workers of the Moscow Criminal Investigation Department headed by investigator Alla Shatrova specializes in investigating "dead cases" - crimes that for various reasons have not been disclosed by the police for many years. Every time new facts appear, new witnesses, Alla Shatrova and her colleagues use every opportunity to reproduce and analyze the events of the crimes committed many years ago. The investigation team works out old and new versions, bit by bit restores the course of events, goes to the suspects and forces them under the weight of evidence to commit a confession.
- In the spring of 1982 as Brezhnev's power was waning, Yuri Andropov decides to tackle corruption and apathy in the Soviet Union. A number of company directors were targeted, but Andropov's first aim was to arrest Berkutov, director of the country's First Yeliseyev Grocery Store, who, it was believed, had been supplying faulty goods to influential government officials for many years. With Brezhnev's rule almost at an end and Andropov tipped to replace him, Colonel Skachko, Head of the Investigation Department approaches some of Berkutov's inner circle, starting with his assistant Zoya Platonova. During the 'cultivation' of Zoya Platonova, an interesting fact is established - her son, Anton had had an affair with Skachko's wife, Masha, who had given Anton a book forbidden by the regime. To save Masha, Skachko has no alternative but to release Anton and give up his interrogation of Zoya Platonova. Berkutov is soon arrested and questioned by Skachko, who takes an instant liking to him. Being a war veteran, Berkutov has become a 'hostage' of the state system, having been ordered to get rid of surplus goods, which he distributed among the power-holding structures without making any profit for himself. He had even bought his second-hand Mercedes with money that he had earned honestly. Skachko realizes that Berkutov is not guilty but is nevertheless going to be made a scapegoat, as the machinery of justice has already been started. After Brezhnev's death events spiral out of control as Andropov, needing to set a strong example, demonstrates an increasingly tough line against corruption. Berkutov is tried and executed, and after his death, his carefully kept accounts are filed away in the archives.
- Marina is a 37-year-old divorcee who raises her 12-year-old daughter alone and works as a teacher at an art school. But it only takes a few days before Joe begins to understand the villagers and, after accepting them into his heart, he falls in love with Liza, a beautiful local girl. But his sincerity and openness wins him the love of an abused, previously-kidnapped girl, whose mother, not exactly understanding the Canadian's intentions, finally sees what her young daughter likes in this bumbling outsider.

- Nine-year-old homeless Vanya witnesses a crime - he saw the face of one of the bank robbers. In order to protect the valuable witness, Detective Varvara Rodionova takes Vanya to live in her aunt's house. However, Varvara is unaware that the boy picked up a flash drive that one of the robbers had dropped at the scene of the crime. The robbers waste no time in engaging a man whose mission is to cause Varvara to fall in love with him and trick the valuable flash drive out of the boy.
- Andrey Makarov, Head of the Police Forensic Laboratory, is a real professional. He is clever, extremely well educated and possesses a fine attention to detail. It is often thanks to this attention to detail and his non-conformist methods that the most complex crimes are solved. Makarov and his group of experts work in tandem with Detective Bogdana Kovalskaya. However, Makarov is an incorrigible cynic and misanthropist, so his relationships with his colleagues are consistently tense. In addition, he has a skeleton in the closet - the reason for his return to the police after an enforced resignation is the death of his sister whom he loved dearly. Her death was recorded as resulting from an ordinary robbery, a crime which had never been disclosed, but Makarov is sure this was a premeditated murder. This time he is determined to find his sister's killer.

However, it is only after she finally wins Boris back, that she is able to find true happiness.
