- Hector, who was reared by a maiden aunt, decides to leave his sheltered life and become a reporter. At the newspaper where he has works, Hector becomes friendly with a young female reporter, who uses the byline "Firefly" for a series of articles intended to expose a notorious café. The young woman enlists Hector's aid and together they gain enough evidence to close the café.
- Billy Davis discovers that his father's bakery business is in serious financial trouble and leaves college in order to help his family. He goes to work as a baker and soon falls in love with Mary Bryson, whose father is Davis's biggest rival in the bread business. When Bryson's secretary bribes the Davis foreman to put cement in the bread, Mary learns of the plot and warns Billy. The concrete loaves have been delivered, so Billy is forced to rent a plane and tell his customers of the trick by means of a sky-written message. The elder Bryson berates his foreman for underhanded dealing, and Billy later beats the foreman in a fight.

Unknown to Edwin, his relatives are after his money and plot his death. One day, after his doctor tells him that he will die at 5:00 o'clock that afternoon, his relatives try to obtain his signature on a new will. Learning of their greed, Edwin does not sign the will and eventually learns from his physician that the diagnosis was a mistake, inadvertently caused by a bee hiding within the doctor's stethoscope. The revelation brightens Edwin, as well as cures him of his dyspepsia. He decides then to chase after the girl, who is leaving on a train, and convinces her to marry him over her disapproving father's objections.
