- In the Shin Buddhist story Yome-Odoshi-No-Oni-N-Men ("The Demon Mask for Frightening Brides"), a woman wears a demonic mask to frighten her daughter-in-law and stop her attending Buddhist sermons; one day she is unable to remove the mask, which has grafted itself to her face. This grim parable later formed the basis of the well-known horror film Onibaba ("Old Devil Woman"), directed in 1964 by Shindo Kaneto.
- From the 1759 kabuki play, in which Kiyo-hime transforms into a giant serpent. See also entry for Dojoji (1899).
