At the end of the war, he fled from the Fuhrerbunker and disappeared one of the most sought after and highest ranking Nazi fugitive. Despite efforts by Simon Wiesenthal, Bormann is not found. Eventually, a skeleton is discovered in Germany is matched to Bormann. It is believed he died shortly after his escape from the Fuhrerbunker.
