- After the tragic deaths of his son Ajit and daughter-in-law Rajni, Raja Saheb decides to educate his granddaughter Neelam in the city. Years later, Neelam has grown up and returns temporarily to their rural palatial home. Raja Saheb would like her to live there and look after the business, but she refuses. Then she meets Anand and they fall in love and want to marry. Anand is introduced to Raja Saheb and Neelam to Anand's mom Shanti; both approve and start planning for the wedding and marriage. But Anand is not who he claims to be: he is a snake who was kept in captivity by Tantrik Goraknath, who wants to possess a priceless diamond stone called "Mani", and Neelam is the only one who knows its location. And Goraknath, unlike his mentor, Bhairavnath, has ensured that no one will stand in his way when he obtains the Mani.
- Jailor Manmohan Krishan is responsible for looking after convicts undergoing sentences of rigorous imprisonment. He has a young, beautiful and captive daughter named Shalini. Shalini is a poet, one day while reciting her poetry, she meets with a young man, who introduces himself as Amar, who also happens to be a poet himself. The two of them spend beautiful moments together and finds themselves attracted to each other. Shalini wants to find out why Amar is in jail. She is told in no uncertain terms that Amar is in jail for murder - for killing the brother of his former lover, Sapna. She also found out that this is not true and would strive to the best of her merit to get Amar release from jail because she is in love with him and would like to marry him.
- A village youth falsely implicated in a conspiracy is imprisoned and can't prove his innocence to his beloved. Devastated, he takes to alcohol.
- Pregnant Reshmi decides not to have the baby after she wins a beauty pageant. But her husband Rohit doesn't agree, so she walks out of the marriage. Now, Rohit must try to win her back.
- Dr. Sunil Gupta lives a wealthy lifestyle with his wife, Aarti. Although they have been married for several years, they do not have any children. Aarti did get pregnant once, but failed to conceive. Aarti decides to travel to take a break in their Khandala bungalow, which is also in the neighborhood of Aarti's sister Vidya, her son, Raju and her husband's house. Since her bungalow is being decorated by Vinod, whom she remembers as her fellow collegian, both spend considerable time together. When Vinod finds out that Aarti is basically alone most of the time, he proposes to her - but Aarti rejects him, a physical tussle ensues, Aarti grabs a revolver, a shot is fired, Vinod falls down the stairs and dies. Vidya assists Aarti in disposing off his body. A few days later, Sunil joins them in Khandala and brings home a male who claims that he has lost his memory - the male is none other than Vinod - and Sunil's diagnosis is that Vinod will gradually regain his memory. Watch what happens when Vidya and Aarti find out and the steps they take to prevent this from happening.
- Concerned about the outbreak of plague in a distant rural village in India, Dr. D.D. Sinha asks a number of prominent doctors to go there and treat the ailing and prevent the disease from spreading. No one except his protégé, Dr. Paras, is prepared to go there. Dr. Paras travels there, works with the villagers to prevent the disease and treats the ailing, and is successful in preventing it's spreading to other communities. He meets with village belle, Lajwanti alias Lajjo, and both fall in love with each other. Paras promises to return back and marry her. Lajjo awaits his return, but he does not return, the villagers taunt her, beat her senseless, she loses her eyesight, is abducted and sold into prostitution. Then one day she gets an unexpected patron, none other Dr. Paras, who is now engaged to Dr. Sinha's daughter, neurologist Manju, and would like to assist Lajjo is getting her sight back. The question is will Lajjo accept any help from a man who betrayed her, and is directly responsible for her present plight?
- During a jail riot instigated by convict Jaggu (Joginder), the Jailer, Arun Mehra's (Dev Anand) life is threatened and another convict, Dinesh (Satish Kaul), risks his life to save Arun. Arun and his mother, Mrs. Mehra (Sulochana) find out that Dinesh is on death-row for killing noted Professor Ashok Verma. Arun does not believe that Dinesh is guilty and so he arranges his escape from prison. As a result Arun has not only the police, including his own father, Inspector General of Police Mehra (Pran) after him on a manhunt but also underworld don Master (Ajit) and his men; and a cold-hearted female assassin (Zeenat Aman) who has reserved two bullets in her gun for Arun and Dinesh.
- A story of the blind sense of duty of the elders and the self-confidence and arrogance of the young. Both think they are right for the sake of love.
- Lucknow-based Nawabzada Aslam lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his dad, Bakar, and mom. He writes poems under the pen name of Raj Lakhnavi, and is a close friend of Iqbal. One day he meets and falls in love with Salma Banarsi, a Banaras-based Courtesan. When his parents arrange his marriage with his foreign-returned cousin, Mumtaz, he informs them that he loves Salma and incurs their displeasure so much so that his dad shoots him, and he gets hospitalized. When he recovers fully he is shocked to find that Salma has not only accepted Iqbal as her lover, but has also taken a lot of money and jewelry from his mother. He takes to alcohol in a big way and swears to exact vengeance against Salma by getting married to Mumtaz and forcing Salma to sing and dance at his wedding.
- Inder Sen Johar's much publicized comic look at the forcible sterilization program carried out under the orders of former Indian Prime Minsiter, Indira Gandhi, and her son, Sanjay Gandhi, during the dark days of Emergency. Johar comically portrays this story, which was censored and banned for several years by the Government of India, and stars duplicates of many popular Bollywood stars, including Anitav Bachchan. Songs (which continue to be banned by the Indian Government) are hilarious too: "Kiski chali hai kahe gaye baat ye pyare Jhulelalan, jaan bachao, kher manoa, lagega sub ka number, dhama dham mast kalandhar, aaj hai koi baher to kal woh hoga andhar..."; "Prabhuji de do ik santann...."; "Kya mil gaya Bhagwan, Emergency lagake nasbandi karake hamari chuthi karake, nasbandi karake hamari bansi bajake...".
- Haria lives with his widowed and elderly grandmother at a tea estate. He has no knowledge of his biological father, as his mother died at the time of his birth. He now works as a Mahout (Elephant driver) at the tea estate, with elephant-friend, Raja. He meets and falls in love with a gypsy girl, Gulabi, and both want to get married. But Gulabi has another suitor, none other than Ajay, the only son of the tea estate owner. When Ajay finds out that Gulabi loves Haria, he plans to get rid of Haria, but fails. He waits for the right moment, and has his men abduct Gulabi. But before he could have his way with her, she is rescued by Raja, but Ajay subsequently shoots Raja to death. An enraged Haria wants to kill Ajay in return, but Ajay's dad stops him from doing so. Then Ajay's dad finds out a secret about his past life, and decides to change his last will and testament. Ajay finds out about this and lays in wait with a shotgun to kill his very own father - and anyone else who dares to stand in his way.
