Luther (2003)
Superb in Cinematic Quality and Historical Accuracy
This movie was truly an exceptional film. I don't buy movies very often but I bought this as soon as it came to DVD. Being a former Lutheran who is now a Missionary Pastor, I was very anxious to see this film, hoping at last to see the Great Reformer, Luther, accurately portrayed. This movie did so with the help of wonderful casting and fantastic locations and scenes. I've heard some say it was "anti-Catholic" and the charge is absurd in the highest degree. This movie simply portrayed historic events as they happened. The fact that there was rampant corruption in the medieval church of Rome is not the fault of the movie makers. Even Catholic historians agree on the rather unflattering history of the medieval Catholic Church...it was history...it happened. Luther brings this history to light and shows the spiritual journey of a man whose conscience was held captive to the Word of God. It was a truly great film and a truly inspiring telling of Luther's story. I recommend this film to anyone who enjoys intelligent, historical, films. You needn't be a Christian or a person of faith to appreciate Luther's story!
Pastor Greg (2005)
Please note, that I am rating this as a viewer AND a Pastor
Pastor Greg, quite simply, is as awful as a show can get. The acting is horrendous and the production is worse. It looks like it is filmed with a camcorder. I am not trying to be mean. As a pastor, I was hoping upon my first viewing that this might be a good show. It was anything but. Pastor Greg is portrayed as somewhat of a buffoon, but not really in a likable way, ala a Tim Taylor of Home Improvement. I fully support Christians taking active part in media and movies. But please, at least do it well. Pastor Greg gives non-Christians yet another reason to ridicule Christians. This time, the ridicule is well deserved. If Christians are going to be involved in TV and film, they must do it at least as well as non-believers if they expect to be taken seriously.
Left Behind III: World at War (2005)
Good film, despite not following the books
This movie obviously had a bigger budget than the first two Left Behind movies. The first film was simply awful, while the second was an improvement but still very low quality. The third film deviates quite a bit from the books but is an engaging story with convincing acting. Lou Gossett brought some much needed acting credibility to the franchise. The faith message was good, especially the one-on-one between Gossett's character and Cameron's in touching scene of coming to faith. I'd recommend this film as entertaining and uplifting. It is definitely moving in the right direction. Christian film-making is finally starting to get better and this movie is a good example of that. It is not as good as others I've seen, such as Six, The Mark Unleashed, starring Christian actor Stephen Baldwin. It is still a decent movie and emotionally engaging.
