Skinamarink (2022)
Interesting Presentation but Nothing Happens
The presentation of this film was very interesting. It's filmed like a home movie on a video camera from the 1990s. The fuzzy and crappy camera quality adds to the suspense and fear of the unknown this movie relies on for its horror. It also benefits from really good sound design, reminiscent of the recording quality of home movies from the 90s. There also isn't a music score to this movie, which adds to the atmosphere it is trying to build. It works pretty well and the movie even has effective jump scares because the movie lulls you into a sense of security with its threadbare narrative. However, the threadbare narrative is what's the biggest problem for this movie. The plot is hard to follow and by the end of the film it feels like nothing happened. There are lots of parts in the movie where there are minutes of shots of the house interior without music, people or anything. You don't see anyone talk either. There's no characters and almost no narrative. That's why almost as soon as I walked out of the theater, I mostly forgot about this movie.
Sorry About the Demon (2022)
A horror comedy that's more comedy and lacking when it comes to horror
When it comes to comedy and romance, this movie mostly pulls it off. It got me to chuckle a few times and even laugh out loud once. The dialogue is ok. At times it feels genuine and emotional, other times it feels sappy and out of a soap opera. I like the protagonist even if he acts too stupid at times to the point where it makes him grating. The other characters are good too, and the actors give pretty good, if not a little cheesy, performances.
The parts with the main character dealing with the demon was a little but the humor feels a bit too obvious. Furthermore, the horror aspects of the film is where it falls flat. All of the special effects in this are awful. The design of the demons is terrible. The demons look fake and all the makeup effects are lackluster and unconvincing. Overall, the movie kind of has a cheap look to it.
The script and characters are fun and worth the watch, however, the overall execution is lacking due to the underwhelming horror and effects, along with just feeling kind of cheap, and not in a charming Evil Dead kind of way.
The Devil Conspiracy (2022)
Bonkers Plot Executed Poorly
This movie has an absolutely bonkers plot but it's not even fun to watch due to the poor execution. The lighting is so dark and the editing is so frantic during the "action" scenes that you can't tell what is even going on. The special effects used for the demons and the design of Satan is lame, when you somehow are able to see them. The gore effects are just downright lazy. The bad direction leads to cheesy performances from the entire cast. The score is bland. Every time this movie seems like it's going to go crazy and do something fun with its premise, the movie almost stops itself. The movie is only 111 minutes yet it feels bloated. Also the movie takes itself too seriously, even though there are scenes that are unintentionally funny, and it would work a lot better as an action horror comedy. I don't know why whatever studio put this stinker out decided to release this in theaters.
Family Guy: The D in Apartment 23 (2017)
Good Stuff!
This episode is just great, where to begin? The lunchroom fight with Chris and Meg goes so hard. It's so cool and they make such a good team. The Brian stuff is good but the social commentary is kind of annoying and feels like Seth is burning straw men. The second half of this episode where Brian is just l big his life is amazing. Seriously, that part perfectly captures how mundane life in the modern day can really be. The use of no music is great. The isle 7 joke? HAHA! That killed. That's good stuff, right there. I'm really high at this moment and the fight with Chris was captivating. Really fun.
Masters of Horror: The Washingtonians (2007)
GREAT CONCEPT, HILARIOUS EXECUTION!
I have hated just about every episode or short film of Masters of Horror I've seen but this episode is amazing! I loved just about every second of it. It's not great or genius in the way that Night of the Living Dead or Citizen Kane is great, it's more on the level of the Boondock Saints or the Room. But come on, the concept alone should interest someone into watching this masterpiece. What's better than cannibal George Washington? This episode is so funny. The acting from the Washingtonians is so over the top and they chew up every scene they're in. The acting from everyone else except the professor ranges from meh to laughably bad. I'm glad the creators of this episode weren't afraid to go where this episode went. Everything you're gonna want to see will be on screen. The only big complaint I have is that the opening scene is really bad and is unnecessary. Go watch this with a couple of friends, don't take it seriously at all, and have fun!
The Basement (2018)
One of the Worst Films Ever Made
Soooo I just saw the Basement and it was........ NOT GOOD. This movie feels completely pointless. The protagonist just dies. That's it. He dies horribly. And his wife set him up. Really, this is just a dude getting tortured for 1 hr and 28 min. . The Basement is also terrible on a technical level. It's filmed like an early 2000s TV movie, the acting is hilariously bad and the movie has just an ugly look to it. The only positives are the teeth scene is gross and the production was somehow able to afford a Lamborghini and actual IPhone text. But seriously don't watch this movie.
