World Trade Center (2006)
There is no other movie like it
that is the best way to describe this film from my point of view. it is so stand alone that there are few movies to compare it to. some people have worried that this movie was made to early (just under one month of five years after the incidents depicted) but that plays into why this movie is so unlike anything you've ever seen before. the effects are so well done that at first I thought they had to have actually destroyed a building during the shot to get it. the movie also paints a horrifying picture for those of us who got to have a normal day with an unbelievable event being shown to us on the news. I live in the middle of the U.S. and only remember listening to the news on the radio at school at certain times. other than that I had a normal day on September 11, 2001. over the years I've learned of new things about that day and how it affected people, but nothing has come closer to showing me what actually happened. Now what is truly amazing is that the story is not shown through the eye's of a made up character that is simply inserted into the situation (such as Pearl Harbor) but is told by many different actors and actresses who portray actual people who went through it. no names that I no of are made up or changed. each actor or actress portrays a real (living or dead) person. I honestly don't think Nicholas Cage or anyone else can be called the "star" of the movie. just about every character has as much importance as everyone else in the movie. sadly this leads to the only problem I think the movie has... under developed "people" (as there are no characters). you never get to learn enough about everyone as you would like so that you would care about them more, yet even that is understandable because many people portrayed in the movie are still alive and well. I don't think they want people invading their personal lives. so by all means, see this movie. it is undoubtedly an important film in the history of American cinema.
Shark Attack 3: Megalodon (2002)
how many jackasses does it take to make this crap
I've seen some badly made movies throughout my life yet this movie tops all of them as a big piece of self indulgent crap. the effects in this movie are BY FAR the worst i've seen in ANY movie (yes, they are worse than Plan 9 from Outer Space). it is all stock footage of shark documentaries and basically photo-shopped people and whatever else they could fit in to make it seem like the shark is huge. not to mention they use one of these shots at least 3 times in the movie (trust me, it's REALLY obvious).
now usually when i see any movie (especially a B horror film) I try to find something, anything that is entertaining about them. there is only one way i could find entertainment in this, laughing at the corniest ways they could kill someone with a shark. its honestly like they took an 8 year old, made him watch Jaws, then asked him how a bigger shark could kill people. they're hilarious. honestly, when you have a guy take a life jacket and jump off a yacht KNOWING THERE IS A GIGANTIC SHARK IN THE WATER and then having the shark stick his head out of the water and catch the guy in its mouth midair, how can you take the movie seriously. oh, and if you want to watch this movie after reading this review, watch for the rich bad guy who speeds away from his yacht hoping to escape (then looks back and delivers a "Bond Villain" smile) then turns and drives straight into the sharks mouth. I'm sorry for having to spoil it for you, but when you actually see it you'll be on the floor laughing for the next half hour (I was).
the only movie that compares to this movies level of suck is Jack Frost 2: Revenge of the Mutant Killer Snowman. because of these 2 horrible examples of film-making, there should be some sort of new film category. I'd like to call them "B horror movies that were meant to be serious but now that we've taken the time to actually watch them we want them known as comedies" films. hey, it will save a lot of confusion for those who rent these types of movies.
honestly, who comes up with this crap
xXx (2002)
fun ALTERNATIVE to James Bond
while this movies plot is overall very thin, its presentation is amazing. the stunts performed in this movie have much more attitude and style than most other secret agent movies.
some people think this was supposed to replace 007. I can only say... WHAT THE %&@# ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT. 1: xXx is not suave, 2: xXx does not have super high tech gadgetry, 3: xXx only comes close to comparing to the stunts of 007.
Vin Diesel's character Xander Cage is not trained to be a secret agent, he's not meant to look at a situation and figure all the angles and beat the bad guy. he has other people doing the thinking for him. plus there are several times in the movie where his inexperience with such tools as firearms shows. Cage is a guy that looks at movies and says "I could do that". thats what made him an extreme athlete. he doesn't get the hang of actually killing people for a while. he finds his skills from copying what he sees in movies and does in video games.
one of my favorite parts of the movie is when Diesel says to a cop,"you got a bazooka, dude stop thinking Prague police and start thinking Playstation, BLOW $#!% UP"! this one line shows that he is immature and inexperienced. hes always just along the lines of reality and video games, as that is a big part of todays culture.
His inexperience as a secret agent is the second main highlight of this film, he is just an extreme sports punk. nothing more nothing less.
Devil May Cry 3 (2005)
Most Stylish Video Game Ever
Devil May Cry 3:Dante's Awakening comes very close to topping the original. It's a compelling adventure that will keep your hands glued to the controller.
You play as Dante who has proved throughout the first two Devil May Cry games that he is an all around bad-ass. From fighting enemies while impaled with their weapons to simply blowing' $%&@ up, you got to be tough to top this guy. Well now we see his younger days, and guess what, he's as tough as ever. At the beginning Dante is around the age of 20 ( my guess, not official)and his youth shows. From shouting cheesy one-liners to being obsessed with parties, Dante is not yet the battle hardened, disciplined warrior of the first two DMC games. Yet that doesn't in the slightest mean that he's a wimp.
Throughout the games fantastic cut-scenes Dante appears even more invulnerable than ever. Fighting enemies with giant blades stuck in his chest, arm, and leg, while eating a slice of pizza is one of the most memorable things I've ever seen in a video game (or even a movie for that matter).
The story ( which was definitely not a plus in the first two games) holds up surprisingly well. While it doesn't really twist and turn or mess with your head that much, there are still a few surprises to be had. Just like with Star Wars episode 3, things will get gradually get more and more familiar and you'll start to see the connections with the first game.
Now lets finally get to the game-play. You have the choice between using a mêlée weapon (sword, nun-chucks, guitar) and a ranged weapon (handguns, shotguns, missile launcher). You can run around with only two mêlée weapons and ranged weapons at a time. But you can switch each with the press of a button, mid-combo even. Fling an enemy into the air with your sword, keep him suspended in the air with your handguns, let him fall down just in time for you to bash him with nun-chucks, right before you blast 'im in the head with the shotgun. Hard sounding combo's like these are made easy with the slick control system.
You also get a choice of combat style's. Swordmaster allows you to use all your mêlée weapons to their full potential with more combo's and special attacks. Gunslinger (my personal favorite) does the same thing with your firearms (such as targeting multiple enemies with your handguns). Trickster enable's you with better mobility as you avoid attacks by running up walls or somersaulting out of the way while you wait for the opportune moment to attack. Royal Guard gives you defensive abilities, blocking and pushing away enemies, attacking only when it's safe. There is also Doppleganger and Quicksilver which allow for duplicates and control of time, but are more like special items than styles of combat.
I know just about everyone I talk to about this game says it's just this side of impossible, but from where I'm standing that just can't be true. I am by no means a expert at gaming. I almost never go above the Normal difficulty setting for any game. So I stayed away from this game for a long time. When I finally decided to try it, I ended up completing it over the weekend (and I do not mean the full 48 hours). Yes the game is hard but once you get the hang of the great controls it will definitely get easier. Besides, that is why Capcom allows you to replay missions and collect more orbs and experience points. It might just be me, but I honestly don't think it's that hard of a game.
What can I say, this is just a great game. If I truly have an actual can't-deal-with-it problem, it's Dante's frat-boy attitude. You get really sick of him talking all the time like a complete brat and wish he'd just be more quiet like he was in the other games. If you can except that, you have one great gaming experience on your hands. In Dante's favorite victory quote: JACKPOT!
