American Psycho (2000)
Saved by the performances
Since the movie started I struggled to engage, I wasn't able to care enough, the story felt mild. What kept me watching was Bale's good acting. Still, throughout the film the motivation of the main character seems to be to keep killing without getting caught. I couldn't figure out other goal, so I didn't feel any interest for the ending. We have the detective who seems to be talking the story somewhere but didn't make any difference. The film is full of clever moments and some humor, but these don't advance the plot. It was mostly entertaining, hence the 7. At the end, we get this speech that I struggle to make sense of. What is the evolution or change in the characters or the story?
Don't Look Up (2021)
A bit disappointing given the cast
I had expectations that with such a great cast this movie could deliver. Still that didn't happen, lot of missed opportunities. I appreciate the social commentary and the story itself, a movie with this theme needed to be made. Is clever how they used an asteroid about to hit earth as a comparison with the pandemic and our response. But my issue with this films has more to do with the performances (to my own surprise) and the directing ultimately.
I didn't connect with the characters, something felt off all the time, as if the actors weren't comfortable with them. The performances of Leo and Meryl left a lot to desire, but I won't blame it on them. Some scenes felt dull, as if they where demotivated.
Also, since the beginning things not related to the plot started to throw me off, like a ridiculously obvious product placement, but specially the photography and editing. Some shots where out of focus, choppy and the cutting, out of rhythm at times, distracting. Im some scenes they would include close ups of items that don't support the story in any ways. It made it feel all over the place. I would like to think those where artistic choices.
