Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Really well done singing fun
We're not the biggest fans of musicals but this really worked well. The songs were well written and all the vocals well sung. We also have liked how they've developed the characters so nicely all season. We thought La'an's song was the best written and Uhura is the best vocalist of them all. It would have been nice to see James and La'an get it together but following canon it's understandable that they would keep the Carol storyline alive. After all, the first Kirk Shatner was always getting around. The last episode was really well done too and we are looking forward to another great season soon.
Bliss (2021)
Not a Sci Fi but an addict's trip
I don't get how this movie has been billed as science fiction. The entire movie is one long hallucination. The two of them are homeless friends using drugs together. Made homeless by their drug use. At the end you clearly see that reality set in and it's bittersweet seeing him visit his daughter. So sad drug addiction is.
Radioflash (2019)
Sweetie, or at least the script writer really likes the word
I should have counted how many times the father called the daughter "Sweetie". We almost shut the movie off because of it and then at the end when you thought you were done hearing sweetie the grandfather said it to her. The movie was more about evading a crazy son and mom than being about an apocalypse. It kept our attention to the end and the end was at least a good ending so I'll give it a 6. If the ending was sucky I would have given it a 3.
Coffee with Ana (2017)
Quite good for an almost documentary that was actually fiction
The chemistry between the two central characters was what kept our attention. They are both funny and I found out later that most of the dialogue was improvised so it really was watching two people just having conversations. They just had to keep the fictitious backdrop of how they met and who they were supposed to be. Some funny moments like her trying to him how to say Colombia properly really kept the story afloat. The father at the end with his very poignant comments and you realize all that was intended the whole time. Cute story and I wish Camila Jurado would do more English speaking movies.
IO (2019)
Decent Plot, terrible timeline
POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT
If you can suspend your disbelief for 2 hours it's not a bad bit of dialogue between the two main characters. It kept our attention, we did not fall asleep lol. Sort of nice ending I guess? You really need to overlook a lot of problems with the timeline though.
If her father and mother were around before the atmosphere changed, how long after did they have their daughter? She is portayed as around 20? When Micah comes in he talks about being there long before it happened but he is what in his 30s? So this guy knows her Dad, has a wife and kids, 20 years passes and he is still 35? If Sam was born after the Ammonia heavy atmosphere began maybe she is able to adapt to the new atmosphere but why did the bees dies from one little storm passing through? Yet she goes right into the heart of the ammonia and has no problems breathing? When they go to the city it looks like the city has been dead for hundreds of years. She is 20 and was born of a father who was around before the atmosphere changed. The city would not look that bad yet. How did Micah survive all that time not on top of a mountain away from the air but no one else does? Not one other? Here's a biggie they don't even try to explain, I'm not thinking a satellite to collect geothermal energy orbiting a distant planet is going to have much space in it to live for even one person let alone thousands and enough to start a colony 4 light years away? With what resources were they even able to survive on the satellite let alone fly to a planet 4 light years away. There are many more inconsistencies in believability but I grow tired of typing.
If you like the actors and can just enjoy them talking it's ok lol
SnowComing (2019)
Unbelievably Corny
So So Syrupy and laid on thick with cheese and corn. Note to Hallmark, there is a limit to the amount of sugar my coffee can take before it tastes bad. Your movies are like that as well, they are usually a guilty pleasure for my wife and I. We can sit and watch many of your movies together and have fun doing it. The chemistry and feel of Hallmark movies and their undeniable formula can be enjoyable on a quiet night cozy night under blankets on the couch. But this latest installment, even my wife was happy to give up on it. Just too much over the top fluff for an older cast and audience. It reminded me a bit of when you have teens in love and all the corny puppy love antics. At some point during these movies I usually lean over and comment that I'm getting a pimple.
Please back off a little on the over endearing qualities you so feel you need to keep your formula working. It worked the way you had it, no need to go any further.
Arrival (2016)
Slow and Boring
The show just lumbered along and along, we were sure it was going to get better but it never did. This whole docile quiet act that the aliens had for the entire movie was stupid as was the fact that some idiot would go against them and they would do nothing. The fact that they looked like they had no agility in their "hands" but they built these awesome advanced ships but they look like Octopi. Then the whole thing with Amy Adams just figuring out these circles in just a few weeks time and by the end she is basically communicating without assistance like yeah right. Then the worst part, you are actually happy for five minutes when she convinces the world what she knows and you expect some kind of cool climax with the aliens and they just fly away. Shoot to the scene where Amy Adams has some kind of flashback about her family and the movie is over. We want our money and 2 hours back.
Hummingbird (2013)
Absolutely Terrific
This movie script was very well written, great storyline and very in depth character development. The best part of this movie though comes from the on screen chemistry that is very apparent between Jason and Agata. After we finished watching this movie we immediately searched for Agata Buzek here at IMDb to find out more about her. We were disappointed to find out that she has mostly only done Polish movies.
It would be terrific to be able to see her in more English roles, I hope she considers. Jason on the other hand really did a great job acting despite all the naysayers about his ability. I think he may have fed off of Agata during some the best scenes as she has experience. I will watch this movie again someday, it was that good. Bravo Jason and Agata.
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012)
Actually Really Good
Good Story line, great graphics. Decent representation of Lincoln during the serious parts even though it was obviously fictitious. Suspend your disbelief for 2 hours and enjoy it. If you like Sci Fi Fantasy Vampire flicks, you will enjoy this.
I thought the lead portraying Lincoln looked convincing as the President and all of support characters did well. The acting was top notch and they built great relationships and the action was nicely done. The one knock I would give this movie was the over the top cgi stunts like jumping from horse to horse but other than that it was great.
American Beauty (1999)
Bizarre and in Bad Taste
I was surprised to read a comment here about how great this movie was. Were we watching the same movie? The sheer domestic violence, the peeping tom and the drugs were bad enough. What bothered me the most was the constant hostile nature this movie had the whole time. Then the crazy neighbor ex-marine who abused that boy who liked Jane and then tried to have sex later in the film with Jane's Father? Just when you think some sanity will enter the story as the father looks at a picture of the family lovingly, he is shot in the head by the mother. This movie was completely disturbing and bad for the viewers mindset. I give 2 stars only because the father stopped himself from having sex with his Daughter's virgin friend.
