Everybody Loves Sunshine (1998)
absorbing film, dark undertones
i watched this film straight after watching triads yardies and onion bhajees and was struck by the similarities in tone and filming methods. andrew goth plays a gangster trying to go straight by building up a music career but his cousin goldie decides to ruin everything. the locations are gloomy and you just know that everyone is going to suffer in this film. like triads, yardies and onion bhajees there is a gang war element to the film with the combined black and white gangs taking out the Chinese. a shootout in a Chinese restaurant is bloody and David bowie also stars as a sleezy gang leader. this film never got seen by a wider audience and its a pity because it is a good example of the new style of film making coming out of the uk. get it if you can on DVD as it is quite cheap to buy.
Triads, Yardies & Onion Bhajees! (2003)
shocking badass Asian gang bangers
i sat down to watch this flick full of anticipation. so much has been written in the uk press and the reviews were either of the best uk film in years to the dodgy camera angles variety. let me tell you what i think. OK the film is in black and white but if you watch closely there is a kind of ambient colour trying to come through. the whole story about the gangs chasing after money stolen from heathrow airport was good. the acting was raw but that is what makes this film. the main gangster is a mean guy called singh who is played by manesh patel is very convincing. if you are into your badass type of villains then this guy is going to stay in your memory. before watching this film i was used to seeing uk Asian actors as doctors and bus drivers but the asians in this film show a far more seedier and murderous side than the meek and servile variety films tend to show them as. watch this film is you get the chance.
Malibu's Most Wanted (2003)
funny funny funny, this film is the bomb!
I couldn't sleep one night and found myself watching this on one of the sky movie channels and boy did it make me laugh. The central character b-rad was so over the top and yet it worked. there have been many films before about white boys trying to act like the stereotype black gang banger rapper but they have mostly flopped until now. Anthony Anderson delivers yet another funny performance. this guy is consistently funny in whatever film he appears in and i think he will go on to become a big star. regina hall as shondra is super sexy without ever having to confirm to the typical hip hop cuties we see in rap videos. kal pen also pops up in the film as a crazy arab American student. ryan oneil also features as b-rads father and i was shocked at how this normally serious dude takes to the comedy. watch this film.
