Muffin Man (2003)
6/10
pretty good, not great
23 November 2005
i'd have to disagree with posters who fault the direction and acting, both of which i thought were pretty good, most of all, i think the writer/director should have elicited some help to take an intriguing concept and turn it into an actually good script. i thought the direction and acting (given the material) was first rate but she should have gotten some of her artsy friends to tweak the script a bit and made something really special. from the description on the box i thought the premise was strong and they could have done a lot more with it, but also i think other posters have been unduly harsh. a unique indy flick worth checking out. maybe not for everyone but still somehow compelling...

I, Robot (2004)
this video game had too many product placements
15 November 2005
Warning: Spoilers
i agree with previous posters that the effects, while okay in some parts, in others made me feel like i was watching a video game, also that this film was littered with too many ads, and i like converse all-stars. the robots look pretty decent up close, but from the opening street scene where they are interacting with people they look drawn on, ditto all the tunnels the cars scenes and the entire chicago skyline. from what i understand, george lucas was the first to cross the barrier (phantom menace as well as clones and sith were all -at least- 50% computer generated, meaning they have more in common with "finding nemo" and "toy story" that the original trilogy -or any other movie one would reasonably call "live action" for that matter-) but even though i am no apologist for the recent star wars films, he pulled it off better than this flick did.

Nixon (1995)
9/10
a great movie
31 October 2005
i agree with other user comments that this film is *highly* underrated. while i have to admit, i tend to lean toward epics, this is truly one of my favorite movies. whether you care about politics or not, this is a brilliant film about a man who destroys himself because of his own emotional turmoil and inner conflict. All the performances are Oscar caliber (especially Joan Allen as pat Nixon and Mary steenbergen -sic?- as Nixon's mother) and while i've never been a stone fan, i really respect the innovative film-making on this pic. he takes creative chances and ends up with a film that is really different and very watchable. i like 4th of July, JFK, natural born killers and the untouchables okay, but this is by far his best in my opinion.

The Bronx Zoo (1987–1988)
brilliant but cancelled!
23 October 2005
i was fascinated by the previous posters comparison to both l.a. law and st. elsewhere, there was a time when i considered the three my favorite shows! growing up in the 80's, they completely shaped my image of the world, i wanted to be first a doctor, then a lawyer and then a teacher and i swear these shows had something to do with that. in any event, i almost went to high school in the bronx -ended up in brooklyn instead- but can attest to the accuracy of the depiction of public school in nyc. i ended up a teacher after all, so i guess i should thank the producers (for some reason i've always thought this was a stephen b/David kelly production)
