Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015)
Decent action, standard spy-film-style plot, *BAD* dialogue.
Decent "turn off your brain" fare. Chase scenes, gun fights, the female lead shows some contractually-obligated side boob. All the usual stuff.
Unfortunately, what made me bother to write a review is that the dialogue really stinks. Completely flat and dull all the way through. I feel like it would be better to watch in a foreign language - you would be able to make out the plot beats (let's be honest, there's never anything complicated in these genre films; the height of intrigue is "Are they a good guy or bad guy? Ah and there it is spelled out a scene later"), and you could mentally fill in your own dialogue, which could not possibly be worse than what the scriptwriters have done.
Spirited (2022)
Potential squandered by the soundtrack
An agreeable premise for a Christmas Carol update; promising casting with Ferrell and Reynolds; and a bold, risky level of adult humour for a Christmas film that's not explicitly aimed at adults (e.g. Bad Santa).
The only thing that *really* lets this film down is that all of the music is completely forgettable. There's not a single song that one would feel actually had positive value rather than just being filler, which is a very noticeable flaw in a musical.
I believe the good aspects mentioned above gave this film the chance to impress on a young generation in the same way that "The Grinch" and "The Muppet Christmas Carol" are still much-loved today. As it stands, this film falls to the "fine enough as a time-waster" category.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Meh
Nice visuals. Nice soundtrack.
Too slow-paced for no reason; multiple scenes are just characters standing or sitting around doing nothing. This takes all the excitement out of the plot.
Nerdland (2016)
Decent if you don't get your hopes up
I watched this on Netflix, not noticing it was movie-length. I thought it was just the first episode of a TV series. In that context, it was quite enjoyable and I looked forward to seeing the next episode. I put it in a similar space as Beavis & Butthead, Archer, Aqua Teen Hunger Force; stuff like this. People might be annoyed if they have framed it as "a movie" before watching it. That's the impression I get from the unfavourable reviews at Rotten Tomatoes.
