The Menu (2022)
Utterly lackluster
Started rather intriguing and went sinister to nowhere. Unwell conceived concept and satire. Moking the elite, while being one of them and not knowing how to handle power and authority. Yes all those themes are displayed, after all, peope are people - they always go for the crazies routes, just to prove to themselves how great they are. The whole ego self absorbtion and ego serving thing. I guess that's very human thing, we all relate. There was some premise for the movie but it got lost, just like most of the humanity nowadays. One theme I liked is the fear of dying, especially when unexpected. It could bring either the best or worst in people. They say, there's no such thing as bad movie (or book), if you know how to read them. So take the good parts and leave the rest in the kitchen.
Swarm (2023)
Based on true story and I appreciate it.
I was so looking forward to watch it for awhile and today I just did it. I really loved Dominique Fishback's solid performance. She was so good at translating so many subtle emotions that are hard to pick on the screen unless you've been through some similar experiences. It will resonate with some people more then other. That's why everything is so subjective, but the moment you realize it is based on real story and facts, only being reenacted, you start appreciating it even more.
There were few moments, where it felt disjointed and messy like the whole episode 4 and Billie Eillies moment. I think afterwards the whole story and acting got stale and maybe complaicent. And there was episode 6 - I was not sure is this a docu episode bonus or what, it felt so out of place, no introduction no nothing, just bam - true crime story detective trying to solve the whole thing for 30 minutes but in a very sketchy way. And there was the finale..
In summery: it started all so strong and just faded away. Watch it and make your own conclusions.
Nope (2022)
Way too long and way too pointless
It was recommended in several YT movie list and I decided to give it a go. I rarely regret watching a movie even if its bad one but this one left real feeling i've just wasted good 2h. For me the movie was too long for what it wanted to reveal and the actual unraveling happened in the last 1h. The first 1h was so unecessary. If they focused to cut out the filler scenes and just made an impactful sequence of story, it would be much much better. Anyway, at the end it went no where, so the whole movie premise was totally pointless, once they revealed what they were dealing with. I liked the acting of Daniel Kaluuya, not so much Keke Palmer.
Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022)
The movie is total bananas
I just watched it and it is a solid 7.7 for me. The movie is total bonanza. I haven't laughed out loud so much in recent years and some of the scenes may haunt me for a good time awhile in a good sense. Worth watching at least twice, there are a lot of great moments to be appreciated, if you don't look for perfection. This movie is all about "the stupidity of it all". Very happy for the cast choice and I wish for a sequel if you will.
For those of you, who might rated it below 7 are very unfair. The moment you realize what he move is all about, you'd enjoy it for what it is. I like the fact they didn't make it perfect or too serious, which I first thought it would be better, but at the end all made sense.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
Avatar 2 remake of Avatar 1 now with family.
So 13 years ago we're in square 1 again, now with extended family members and not with one but two Navi tribes. Yeah, how original. I bet the writers were not very bright and took extra looong coffee breaks, to get done with this one. Another corporate bs, focusing only on the violence, war, enmity, division, instilling panic and fear, along with misusing natural resources. Sounds familiar? Oh, yes, so familiar that it hurts from the 3D reality we're all living it.
We ain't that stupid, just because you slap a family sentiments on a political and economic driven movie, where it's all about killing and exploiting, doesn't mean you will fool us and present it as a "ground breaking" again. So many themes are wrong in this movie, lacking to convey any positive, uplifting messages, that would inspire e new way of life for everyone. No matter how much of the natural beauty you show in these movies, if the motives and the values are not set right, I'm not buying any of it. Very underwhelming and I'm giving it 6 just for the work crew, because I appreciate their work, but when comes to script writing, themes, messages, interpersonal relations.. it barely goes to 2.
Go watch it once and make your own conclusion. I expect Avatar 3 to be remake of Avatar 1&2, now with neighbors. Thank you.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: Adrift (2022)
Really enjoyed this episode
Out of the two I watched, this one was my favorite so far. I enjoyed all of it. I was so immersed at the end that I did not wanted to end. I could watch the whole series in a single watch. It was that good and intriguing for me. I'm not saying it was perfect, but none of the nowadays TV shows are, so looking for perfection will be waste of time. The journey we're about to experience in the next 6 weeks will be very emotional and unpredictable. And I'm all here for it. Again the visuals, the music, the dialogues and acting was great. Any objective person will find something to like in the series. I just don't get the over-reacted hate. I believe over time, this series will be better appreciated and received. People seems to not be ready to tone down the negativity and just enjoy any series for what they are.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power: A Shadow of the Past (2022)
Solid Introduction but yet not perfect
As a fan of Tolkien, PJ's trilogy movies and anything fantasy, I liked the first episode of ROP with the exception of few minor things, that could be done differently.
I liked the references they made to First Age as a immediate prologue and considering they don't have presumably the rights on many FA stories, the show managed to elegantly portrait those moments, without infringement. The visuals and music were movie level and it felt as if I'm really watching a PJ's prequel to Middle Earth.
The story and dialogues were as Tolkien as possible. There were few moments here and there that I did not liked as elves behave more like mortal men not real elves. Wished their wigs were more seamlessly done and convince me this is their natural hair, not a wig. They way it stands with the hide shaved sideburns, made me question it. Acting was convincing and adequate. There were few very memorable quotes. Overall it was a very good introductory episode.
Most people find themselves confused and dissatisfied by Galadriel's character in contrast with PJ's Galadriel. But most people forget the progression and the story that made her the Galadriel we know in Third Age. This younger Galadriel shows sides we never knew til now about her. I totally understood where she came from and why she is the way she is now. And I liked it. After what happened to her, it is only natural to behave like this.
House of the Dragon: The Rogue Prince (2022)
Not as bad as the 1st episode
This episode was quite slow and had few good moments. I liked it more than the first one. It gets a little bit better slowly. The choice at the end was something, not sure how that came to be. Made no sense. But obviously that is the moment where things started to collapse for House Targaryen. For my surprise the first episode I did not liked any of the main characters, this episode i liked a bit more Deamon and maybe he'll not turn out to be the villain. Who knows. Still compared with GOT, this series is quite behind when comes to dialogues, wit, characters.. the story is meh, violence, power struggles, bloodshed.. all the usual we already know.
The OA (2016)
YCFM must continue
Must watch, if you really want something unique and out-there in the best possible way. I'm a bit mad they presumably "cancelled" it, but I believe they're taking their time for S3 in near future, hopefully. S2 is just a masterpiece. S1 is the prep. The ride is all worth it. I'd recommend to anyone to at least give it a try, it takes few episodes to get it all in, but boy once you're in, you never want to leave. The cast, the story, the concept, the acting, everything is so real and great. It's like all make sense and fit to what we experience without even knowing or asking ourselves on daily basis.
House of the Dragon: The Heirs of the Dragon (2022)
Trying to be as good as GOT but It's not
I'll start off by saying i was left with a lot of mixed feelings and uncertainties after watching the first episode. Most people here are so hyped about this show, thinking it will be as good as GOT, but even from the first episode you can sense it's entirely different series. The quality is there but not the story telling.
I wished the episode focused on lower pace by giving a time for proper introduction to the new characters and story instead of rushing it through just to cover as much history facts as possible. They could have break down the introduction part in actual scene and then go on the new family. They instead wasted the episode on showing unnecessary scenes like killing the bandits and the bloody tournament, which was totally out of place for a first episode, where the main focus should be on the characters and how they rely to each other. In comparison if you watch GOT first episode you will see drastic difference. I almost did not like any of the characters for different reasons. Too much focus on the violence and the politics, wish for more humane and uplifting series. I did not found myself really rooting for anyone, because they all felt too power driven and cold. There wasn't any heart in this episode. If that's the tone they set for the whole season, I see that as greatly missed opportunity. I still think HBO panic after they cancel the Blood Moon project and scrapped this series just to have something. It shows how rushed it is. They could have picked so much other real stories but again they want to capitalize only on the violence, the corruption, the politics, the power hunger and brute characters. I'm just tired of this. GOT had good balance of that plus real people, with their heart and stories I can rely to. Of course it was not perfect but in comparison this feels very unpromising.
The Sandman (2022)
65% good, 35% bad
I liked the concept and the story, but was not sure about some cast and script choices. Most fantasy series fall short for some reason, I guess it's mostly to do with bad writing. I was left with the feeling of something was missing. There is much to be wished for next season. Hope they won't ruin it into more mediocre series, it's 50/50 there already. Solid 6.3 for me. With different production and better script this could turn out great. Still for one two time watches it's not a full waste of time. :)
Severance (2022)
Solid 8 and there is work cut for the rest 2 stars
I really liked how fitting all the cast members played their characters, so the whole story was told in very quiet, mysterious almost funny way but reveals serious topics of nowadays humanity.
I already wished for 2d season, so I will continue enjoying the story and the character development. It's a solid 8 for me. Why not more? We'll see if s2 will make or break this good start of the series.
Game of Thrones (2011)
the defining tv show of 2010's but the end is unforgiven
Must watch up to 6th season, the rest is the downfall of the most watched tv series of 2010's. I'm still mad about how they decided to end the show. Never actually re-watched s7-8 for that reason. Ughh those producers. We were so invested in this show that it really hurt at that time. Conclusion, don't get too invested in TV anyway :)
Dark (2017)
1 season masterpiece, 2d close call, 3d disastorous
One of my all time favorite to watch. 1st season is so great, second was not bad either. But let's talk about the last season, it made no sense to me. It felt they just rushed and panic with the story lines so much that it ended in total disastrous nonsense to me. It happens to most good shows out there, great start and very bad endings. Still its a great show to watch..
