Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget (2023)
Chicken prove they are much smarter than Roosters or men
It's a disappointing, paint-by-numbers sequel that is full of 'the message'.
Rocky was fun and smart in the first film. He seems to have had a lobotomy where he can't do anything right and gets hurt a lot.
He and Ginger have a strong and brave daughter who runs away from home. Her father is useless and so is Fowler. Fortunately the female chickens are smart and competent.
You've seen this film already.
It's very disappointing to see a brilliant company like Aardman fall into the trope of all the male characters being evil or stupid. I hate to think of what they'll do to Wallace and Gromit.
Deinfluencer (2022)
A good attempt
This is a low budget attempt at a high concept movie. It got me to watch it, and I'm pretty jaded.
Plot: a cheerleader/influencer finds herself abducted in a Saw-like situation where she has to make social media content to stay alive.
Unfortunately it's a little preachy and UNBELIEVABLY predictable. And I mean everything is predictable. From the first toe removal (with no pain that happens off camera and while she's unconscious) that she never checks, you know that the whole thing is a set up.
Also, the lead actress is just too aggressive to be real. I'm not sure what the writer was going for with all the "boys are stupid" statements. I think there were about five of them. Was he portraying the girls who said it as sexist, or was he trying to say that boys are actually stupid.
While the concept was good (although executed better in the Saw franchise), the acting was a little wooden, the sound was all over the place and the plot held NO surprises.
ChickLit (2016)
Good premise, poorly executed
I watched this film based on it's tag line. It was a good premise, but the acting wasn't great and it was a little ham-fisted.
Plot: several literary types (a gay book shop owner, an English professor, a local reporter and a publican) band together to write mummy-porn. They do so to save the local pub.
*spoilers*; obviously they suddenly need to have a female author. Now this could have been a ripe area for exploration. Whenever a woman has needed a male front-man to sell something there's some exploration of bias and sexism in the industry. But that's not even acknowledged.
Then there's the front-woman. A struggling actress. So they set her up with fame and fortune and all she has to do is 'act'. But apparently that's too taxing for an actress and she is portrayed as the victim. She is cruel to them, betrays their trust and then tries to financially screw them.
In the final scene, she doesn't even apologize but is given a job in the saved pub.
It could have been really fun. Like a literary Full Monty. But each step was ham-fisted and obvious. The actress was totally unsympathetic and the four authors were continuously dumped on. It was great to see the gay book store owners, but even that was a little rough. It would have been nice to explore the differences between male and female tastes, particularly as some of the authors were so unfamiliar with the genre.
Disappointing.
