Suske en Wiske: De duistere diamant (2004)
OK for fans, watchable for others
I saw this movie at the theater when it was released. I liked it all the way, but I can imagine some might not have liked it at all.
First of all, if you've never read a S&W-comic you may have a hard time getting into the characters. They all have their own little singularities which have grown during the years (remeber this is a comic that has been published for over 60 years now) and may seem a bit awkward to some.
Secondly, the dialogues and especially the humor is typically Flemish, which might be even harder to get into by foreigners.
Thirdly, the costumes are exact copies of the costumes used in the comic. Even though most of the story is set in the middle-ages, a lot of costumes may seem outdated because of the fact that this movie is based on an episode that was released in 1958.
And lastly, this is a kids-movie. If you rent/buy and expect a cool transformation of the story into an epic movie... too bad. This was meant for kids, so you should watch it as a kids-movie.
So, as a fan of the S&W comics I am very pleased with this movie (which is why I gave it a 9). This is exactly how a fan wants the story to be retold as a movie. If you're not a fan, try it. Maybe you'll be bitten by the virus too.
Rambo (2008)
Story? What story?
After the stunt Stallone pulled by making another great Rocky movie (imho the best since Rocky I), I was very thrilled about another Rambo installment. However, after seeing the movie all I can be is disappointed. First of all, this is the first movie where Rambo uses the F-word. I'm not against swearing, but it's not something Rambo would do. He never used the F-word in the first three movies and now says stuff like "F**k the world!" Secondly, his trademark weapon is not in the movie. Where's the cool knife? Why did they leave it out? Thirdly and most important: Where's the story? This movie is like a rerun of First Blood: part II, but with the plot left out. A he does is go to camp, kill over 200 people (most of the from standing on the same spot with a machine-gun) and then go back home. That's it, nothing more! Take that and the fact that all characters in this movie a complete stereotypes and there you have the recipe for a complete disaster. Rambo might not be "expendable", but this movie sure is! PS: I do hope that potential Rambo 5 is going to be made, so the series has a better ending instead of this piece of crap.
Wandafuru raifu (1998)
Probably the best movie I ever saw!
This movie was a turning point in my life, meaning that it got me into non-commercial films. I remember we had an assignment for art-class involving Asian cinema. We could pick one of three films. I alone chose this one, which led me to being the only person in the theater (which was pretty cool). After I saw this movie I started searching for similar movies and have been ever since. This movie really has everything I want to see in a movie: an original plot, lots of moods-wings, great acting and a true feeling of amazement. After almost ten years this movie is still in my top 10! All into Asian cinema should see this film!
