The Strangers (2008)
Films like this make me worry about the horror industry...
***NOTE: while there are no spoilers for the movie, I briefly mention events which are present in the trailer, and in no way spoil the story!***
I wanted to like this film. I really did. The premise was good (albeit unoriginal), the trailer showed some promise, and it got decent reviews - so I though "hmmm this might be pretty decent"
Wrong.
"The Strangers" turned out to be one of the most annoyingly-clichéd horror movie I've seen for a while. Characters separate and leave each other alone? Check! They run back into the house? Check! They crawl away from the bad guy? Check! It's all there!
What worries me, however, is all these comments I read about how its "the scariest film ever!". What the hell?! Come on, seriously? While I believe everyone has their own opinion, and while I didn't enjoy the movie, I know a lot of people did (including my friends whom I went to see the movie with), but to say its the scariest film ever...this just baffles me!
And now I read a sequel has already been confirmed. Now I've lost even more respect for this film. While this wont be on my "Top Ten of 2008" list, it had a few good things about it, the main being it seemed like a STAND ALONE FILM! It doesn't need a sequel, its a random story based on real events. Why the hell does everything need a sequel these days? *sighs*
When the movie Cloverfield came out, Empire magazine printed a very positive review, with a little comment at the end, along the lines of:
"If they ever make a sequel, deduct two stars from the rating"
Consider that my final comment of this poor attempt at a promising idea!
Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers (1988)
Bronze medal - 3rd best in the series!
I didn't care much for Halloween II, It was alright (certainly better than Halloween:Resurrection), but was more an average slasher, and not as intelligent as the first. I didn't even bother to watch 3: I imagine it was a good film, but the way I see it, no Micheal: no Halloween!
The original is easily the best, and H20 is, while not nearly as good, a very faithful sequel. However, I hadn't yet seen H4, which I had heard was good. Last week I got the chance to see it, and believe it when they say it is one of the better sequels. The first thing you'll notice about the film is it is quite more violent than the original, like H2. Unlike H2 however, it still has the creepiness factor of the original, and does have a decent story and reasonably good acting (Donald Pleasance is on top form again, and hats off to Danielle Harris for a great performance) You can pick it up for really cheap now on DVD(I got it for £2.50), there are no extras to speak of, but both picture and sound quality are good, so its worth a rental at least, because I would advise Halloween fans to at least check it out!
World Tour of Scotland (1994)
Billy's most passionate and loving work!
Everybody should now know who Billy Connolly is - with his 'colourful' language and his hilarious, and surprisingly accurate take on the strange, funny and ridiculous events that happen through our lives, that we tend not to notice. He has made a name for himself as the funniest comedian to come out of Scotland.
Billy Connolly's World Tour of Scotland, the first of his four successful World Tour series, shows Scotland through the eyes of a man who was born and raised in Scotland, and as well as covering all different parts of Scotland (from Glasgow and Edinburgh, to the Shetlands, to the Borders), we get to hear about the fond memories of his childhood. He shows us the house he was born in, where he worked as a welder, to where he lost his virginity! He also talks about some of Scotlands most famous historical events, from the battle of Culloden, to the Tay Bridge disaster, Billy covers the length and breadth of his home country. As far as the comedy goes, Billy basically has never been funnier. This was the stage where he was at his very best (if you haven't seen his Live 1994 show, I suggest you do asap!) Overall, a loving and passionate take on this beautiful country. A must-see!!!
