Ms. Marvel (2022)
Review Bombers Are Pathetic
This show is an endearing, intriguing tale about family and navigating the world as a young person in 2022. It is bizarre that a show featuring a young hero being slightly more accessible to younger people has so many people outraged after content that has consistently been more geared towards adults (did you all not see Wanda serial killing in Strange 2?) Variety is what keeps the MCU flowing and successful, there still are and always will be straight white male heroes but it's unrealistic to think that those are the only options in a country as diverse as the United States.
This is a star making lead turn and a great showcase for a newer hero the casual audiences might not be that familiar with. Moon Knight was a bit of a letdown in terms of having a lack of great hero moments whereas Ms. Marvel has already tackled that by the 2nd episode.
The Houses October Built (2014)
Worth a watch
Here's a perfect example of a mediocre film carried by a solid concept. The Houses October Built follows a group of friends filming and chasing the scariest haunted house attractions they can find while also looking for the most extreme haunt they can find. The movie plants plenty of cool ideas like convicts working as "scarers" and the occasional prop malfunction, but fails to capitalize on any any of that, electing to go with more of a cat and mouse approach that never really delivers the scares. I'm also confused as to why they wrote very R rated dialogue when the violence content is PG at best. Had they cut out the cursing and got PG-13 this could have gotten theatrical release, or if they had taken a more brutal approach to the violence it could have very well been a memorable modern gem. Instead we're left with a feeling of what could have been.
Ang-ma-reul bo-at-da (2010)
Hold on tight. This is one hell of a ride
So I had heard a lot of praise for this movie before finally sitting down to watch it, praise to the point where I had become worried that no matter what happened this movie could never live up to the 5 years of hype I have heard. I was wrong in the best possible way. From it's brutal and exceptionally uncomfortable opening to the long exhale you're finally allowed to take 140 minutes later when the film comes to it's end I Saw the Devil has made itself the standard bearer for revenge thrillers. The filmmakers here know that the central plot line of husband seeking revenge for murdered wife isn't exactly new territory and instead of trying reinvent the genre they just made the best and most extreme version of it, much the way Funny Games did with the home invasion genre. What made Funny Games so memorable was the fact that it punished it's viewers, giving them the violence they were expecting but in such a brutal manner that that it struck a nerve even with those that considered themselves desensitized and I Saw the Devil does the same thing. You know you want revenge, you want to see the husband strike back against this vicious killer, but to what length? How deep into the rabbit hole are we going to encourage our protagonist to go? These are the questions forced on us once the film proceeds past the greenhouse sequence. Thankfully our villain never relents or gives us reason for sympathies, he's as unflinching and imposing as Bardem in No Country For Old Men. Overall this film is probably one of the easiest 10/10 ratings I've ever given, it's both brutal and beautiful, and while ultra violent it never feels forced or unnecessary. A true must see.
The Possession of Michael King (2014)
Well above average found footage horror
The Possession of Michael King is an entertaining, thrilling, and well thought out horror film. I was hesitant to watch at first, expecting another generic possession movie, but the premise is original and catches your interest off the bat. Instead of the typical wrong place wrong time possession this is a case of curiosity killing the cat. There are a few scattered jump scares but seeing Michael's descent is what sticks with you after the credits have rolled. Overall this was well shot and acted, my only real complaint is that they could have taken their time and dug more into the religious exploration scenes in the first act.
