So I think the problem with this film is that it's very ambiguous with no explanation and I know for myself, I like to have some idea of what's going on. Even if the origin of the antagonist isn't revealed or there is still some mystery, at least there is a little bit of understanding as to what is going on.
However, with this film there really is no explanation. First of all it's kind of portrayed like the rapture as in everybody just disappears at the same time. The people that survive supposedly survived because they had a light source, but what about all of the people that were in the cinema for example? How come some light sources carried on working and others didn't? Did it happen all around the world because it isn't night time all around the world at the same time so did people disappear according to their time zones? That bit kind of threw me off to start with. I thought there was going be some reason towards the end of the film to explain why certain people had been left behind, but it was never really clarified. Also, why was the Sun coming up for less and less every day. What could possibly interfere with the earths trajectory in line with the sun that would cause the days to become shorter?
Nor was it ever explained what was actually in the darkness that was taking people. Towards the end of the film we see characters that have previously been taken coming back in the darkness to tempt those that are still alive. So is the darkness playing tricks, is it the souls of those that have been taken trying to tempt others... I know that horror films have a reputation for being ambiguous but this one really was just too ambiguous for it to really make sense .
The little girl at the end survives because she has a torch that is solar powered but the solar powered torch is still a battery powered by solar so how come her battery carried on working when nothing else did? Also with the days getting shorter how can her torch be of a reliable source because I imagine most solar torches to last for over 12 hours of darkness would need a suitable charge? How come they're collecting batteries for torches as a reliable source if the battery in a car powering the headlights isn't?
It's a shame because I actually really loved the idea of the film. I loved the idea that you wake up one day and everyone has disappeared and there's no explanation for it, but it would've been nice to understand somewhere along the line what was actually going on or a hint of what was going on.
Animals were still alive in the film so this was evidently something targeting humans so is it supposed to be a religious thing, an extra terrestrial thing... I honestly was really confused and I think that is what ruins the film because otherwise, it was actually pretty good.
If you like ambiguous films where you don't have any explanation at the end then by all means give it ago because it suitably spooky for a apocalyptic Cora but if you need any kind of explanation or resolution whatsoever then stay clear otherwise you will be left as frustrated as I am.
