Two Men Went to War (2002)
I wish more war-movies where like this.
What superb movie. The tale of two English dentists, who, before D-day, decide to invade France on their own. The result is one of the most enjoyable war-movies I have ever seen. It starts of quite slow, but the pacing suits the story. There are no big build-ups leading to massive machine-gun fights with lots of dead Germans and gore. Rather, you are kept in suspense to whether their comical blunders will bear any results or whether they will manage not to kill themselves by mistake in the process. It had myself and most of my family laughing within the first couple of minutes, and we never really stopped till the end. Bravo! I hope to see more movies like this.
Sophie Scholl - Die letzten Tage (2005)
A beautiful tribute
Something very interesting is afoot in German cinema, this is one of many really excellent films that have come from there that have made me sit up and take note eg.Downfall, Nowhere in Africa, Goodbye Lenin, to name but a few. This movie is no exception. With complete honesty it documents the last days of Sophie Scholl, fellow activist and sibling of Hans Scholl of the White Rose movement. Julia Jentch does an excellent job as the young Sophie, she personifies Sophie's motto of "a strong spirit but a soft heart". The way she was directed made me think of Carl Dreyer's La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc. Lots of close-ups of her face and as the movie has very little score, silence is used very effectively to underline the tension during interrogations or the loneliness of her prison cell.
This movie definitely deserves it's high rating!
