The Bus (2012)
Incredible stuff for any volkswagen enthousiast
This documentary has all the ingredients to.delight any car enthousiast.
Some people may be reluctant to give this a watch because of its "documentary" form but don't be mistaken, this is no documentary.
There are a number of documentaries out there that deal with Volksagen's history through time, and they take a historical point of view and most of the speakers are lecturers or some sort, but here, we have true collectors, owners, and passionate people who come to share their experience and love for the VW bus!
If you have a BUS owner yourself, this documentary will make you want to jump right in it and go for a drive.
If you have been holding a grudge at your bus for the past few weeks, this will help you reconcile with your faithful companion and make friends again !
And I must warn you, if you do not own a VW BUS just yet, make sure your bank account is in good shape, because you will defintely want to browse the internet and see what good bargains are out there for you !
In a nutshell, I will say that it is going to be very hard for someone to come up with a better documentary on the iconic VW bus!
Juste la fin du monde (2016)
True masterpiece in its genre
If you love drama movies in which tension increasingly rises as the movie progresses, this is definitely going to rock your boat like it did mine.
It's all dialogistic... though the main character is all but a talker. Therefore, it all relies not only on the others' conversations and forms of expressions, but also on the reserved reactions of the main character (Louis). On top of this, the omniscient narrative makes it all the more effective and troubling.
This film should definitely talk to everyone, since each family has its own conflictual history... And this family is no exception.
To me, this is as brilliant as Mommy, and I just love Xavier dolan for his pieces of work as he seems to depict family members' interactions perfectly.
What makes this movie well worth watching, is that it'll make your heart beat at various speeds even though the tempo remains mainly the same throughout the movie...
Cherry on the cake is of course the brilliant cast. Vincent Cassel is a genius in portraying this kind of quick-tempered, easy-to-get-triggered family man. His performance works just GREAT with the one of Marion Cotillard playing the role of this slightly submissive, calm and withdrawn family woman.
Loved it, and will watch again soon.
Peaky Blinders (2013)
Perfect in every way
I believe to be a very difficult viewer, but credits have to be given to great pieces of work.
I watched the first 3 seasons very quickly and I must say I had a great time.
I finally got round to watching the fourth one 2 days ago. I didn't have any expectation nor did I give it any prior thought but oh boy, I wasn't disappointed at all!
The first three seaons are great, so is the fourth one, if not even better. One may go as far as to say that the fourth season reaches a climax to the whole show.
The music is great. Being a great fan of Radiohead, I believe we can hear Thom Yorke and his crew in the background on a few occasions. The timing when Radiohead is being played is in perfect accordance with the scenes that are unfolding before our eyes.
The setting is great. I mean, who doesn't love 1920s England?
The costumes are great, from clothes through clean shaves to superb haircuts.
The accents and dialects are extremely pleasant to hear, which is why I urge any non-English natives to NOT watch Peaky Blinders in a dubbed version. I do not believe it to be possible for someone to FULLY enjoy this show in any other version but the original one.
As the seasons pile up, the show gets more and more exciting, intriguing and interesting as the cast keeps being reinforced with new top quality actors, such as Tom Hardy and finally Adrien Brody.
This trio of actors is sublime. The three characters are shown as very different in many ways, yet they all have some outstanding charisma and confidence.
This show is a definite 10/10 for me, I cannot think of elements that would make me NOT recommend it. It is a definite must-watch for people who like this kind of stuff.
The only drawback would be : not enough episodes/seasons!
Hands down to Cillian Murphy. What a performance throughout!
Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
Not half funny as the original version. #overthetop
Being French, I was very curious to see how the Americans adapted "Le Diner de Cons" into an American comedy.
If you're a French and want to see this, spare yourself the time. There are a lot of elements that are similar to the original version. Yes, they are similar but yet different in the way the outcomes and twists occur.
The reason for which I watched it is because Steve Carrel plays the most important role (the imbecile) and I love this guy. His interpretation of 'Pignon' is interesting but is too cheesy in my taste.
In the French Version, Jacques Villeret (who plays the imbecile) strives to be his normal self but keeps doing stupid stuff over and over (unvoluntary!!), which makes the situation(s) worse and worse as the movie unfolds. The thing that may annoy and put off most of comedy viewers with this American remake, is the fact that the 'imbecile' is OVER played. It is very obvious that 'Barry' is too much of a moron to be true which led me to roll my eyes on a few occasions...
Barry just looks like his only goal in the movie is to stay in Tim's life and screws everything up.
One may safely affirm that Barry is trying to fuck up everything through the whole film contrary to 'Pignon' in the French Film who looks like a decent guy who's trying his best to do the right thing, but screws everything up in spite of his good-hearted self, which makes the self hilarious.
The thing I hated the most is the fact that production tried to convey a morale and some cheesy message at the end of the film, which makes no sense to me.
The only redeeming quality of this film is the performance of both Steve Carell and Zach Galifianakis (especially the latter who has outdone himself with his performance)
I do not know a single French person who doesn't like 'Le diner de cons' . Therefore if you're in the mood for a good/great comedy film, go ahead and watch this French classic with subtitles.
