Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)
Concepually, i loved it.
WARNING: SPOILERS! I gotta be honest, i went in believing i was going to hate this movie. I was sure i was going to see another "Batman is best and everyone else sucks" movie. But no. The thing is, story wise, its a dream come true!
Batman is old and paranoid. In a misguided attempt to protect the world he goes after Superman. And even when Batman is winning, Superman stands up tall and shows Batman his mistakes, and by the end Batman becomes more of the hero we know and love.
Couple that with Wonder Woman's short, but cool appearance and an interesting villain(Yeah, i LOVED Eisenberg as Luthor), this movie should have been a blast right? Well, thats just it; Its all in how they pull it off. And they don't do it properly. I found it grating that Lois had to stop the fight. That whole Martha thing was kinda silly. Azog-I mean Doomsday is nowhere near as cool as he should be. And those dream sequences-How? Why? I can buy Flash running so fast he can time travel, but how does he get into a dream?
And, worst of all, Superman isn't really being Superman. He mopes a little to much. And what was with that terrorist he just slaughtered!? He send him flying through a wall so far that he was out of sight. He is dead, no doubt. And again, by the end, i wanted Superman to stand up to Batman, even though he was weakened and smashed, and himself show Batman why he is in the wrong. There was a certain firm, yet caring and kindness in Supermans personality. He should only become mopey and depressed when things start to really get hard, like after the explosion(Oh yeah, great use of McNairy) in the court.
All in all, the potential is there, it just needed a bit more hope and light. Contrast. I enjoyed it, but not without having a lot of problems that kept bugging me.
Kung Fu Panda 3 (2016)
They forgot one important thing. Their own lesson.
Warning: Big spoilers up ahead. Or down ahead. Whatever.
So...Kung Fu Panda 3. I find myself torn on this film. The film was good, don't get me wrong. I had fun. But i also found myself rolling my eyes at other parts. But worst of all; The potential was massive. I saw so many great ideas being wasted in favor of some very boring comedy, and only touched upon. Lets divide the film in three categories;
The good; The music is, like the earlier installments, amazing. Heartfelt, action packed, comedic. The fights scenes have had a massive upgrade. The fights are more diverse(Crane VS Kai, Mantis and Crane VS the rest of the five and Shifu, etc). Po's story is also taken to a new place, as he must learn to teach Kung Fu. He went from student, to master, to teacher.
Mr. Ping is probably the films funniest character. The amount of chuckles i got from him was tremendous. He also gives one of the best emotional moments.
And then there is Kai. Kai, my Kai, where have you been my whole life. He, along with Mr. Ping, is the films big selling point for me. When i saw this guy in the trailer, i was sold. His appearance, his size, J. K. Simmons voice! And he was cool.
Beyond that, Oogway was fun, and so was the furious five, even more so than before.
The bad: The panda village is an ensemble of OK at best and very annoying. A lot of the humor from the panda's are simply just annoying. You have a dumb hugger, an annoying kid and the rest are just kinda loud background characters. At one point they even ruin one of the films emotional moments. Sacrilege! Yeah, its a kids film, but kids can enjoy more mature/less low-brow humor.
The wasted potential: Kai's glossed over back story. He had a close connection to Oogway, grew greedy, got banished. Boom, over. WHAT!? Thats it!? Come on! The relationship between Oogway and Kai needed exploration. Give Kai more reason, more sympathy. Had they given this to Kai, he could have been one of the greatest villains of all time! And it could have added more to Oogway! How must he have flt banishing his "brother"? In the last movie, it killed Shen's parents. That was interesting.
The spirit world. Look at it. Its beautiful, its gorgeous! So why on earth is the fight between Po and Kai in the spirit world so short and one sided!? It happens in the blink of an eye.
All in all, the film is good. Good, not great or amazing, just good. But remember;
"If you only do what you can do, you'll never be more than you are" -Shifu.
The series have done good, but if they don't do more than what they can do, they'll never be more than good. Good is good, but great is better. And i know hey have the potential for great. In fact, if i have learned anything from the film, its about evolving your work, even if the film may not have. Take that quote into consideration. Listen to the cartoon animal ;)
Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Wonderful.
No, i did not see that coming. I'll be honest, i never cared much for the Marvel films. In fact, to me, The Avengers was a huge disappointment. I hated it. But this movie was everything i had hoped for. Its large, and to me the first Avengers looked so...Dull. Boring. But this one had a lot more color. And the characters really blossomed here. In the first film everyone was just sorta there, but here it just feels better. The action was more intense. And i know that story wise this film resembled the first one a lot, but i didn't mind. This film was the first one done right. And then we have the new characters. Scarlet Witch with her witch-esque powers added an interesting dynamic. But my favorite part of the movie has to be Quicksilver. Was the accent cheap? Yes. Was the humor slightly childish? Yes. Did i love every minute of it? YES! I cant help it, but i loved Quicksilver. And then we have Ultron. He took my expectations, laughed at them and exceeded them on every level. He was funny, charismatic and a much more enjoyable villain than teenage rebel Loki. The film was all around in enjoyable. I would have given it an 8 if...If not...:( All of you who saw it-You know what it is.
Godzilla (2014)
A wonderful return too a monster forgotten!
This, ladies and gentlemen is the Godzilla i always wanted too see. It mixes a great story, with some great characters(Although some did feel a bit underused) and some awesome monsters! While Godzilla's screen time can feel limited too some, the moments we get are more than enough too make up for it! The characters, and how the monsters affect them is also great, and all the monsters themselves do feel like they have a personality(As much as creatures like them can have). Again, sometimes ideas are passed by and characters left unused, but the everything else this movie follows enjoyably well. Its nicely paced, although some moments could have been quite a bit longer. An overall great, enjoyable film.
8.5/9 out of 10, check it out!
Gojira-Minira-Gabara: Oru kaijû daishingeki (1969)
Its great. It really is.
Okay, i understand why a lot of you HATE this movie. Its dumb, its weird, it almost makes fun of Godzilla. But, to be honest, it really works for me. While the kid can be annoying, i cant help but feel sorry for him and what this kid is going through, because, well...I did the same. There is a true tragedy to kids who end up imagining a friend/friends to play with, and it can damage kids if it continues. And i can really feel it wright here. And yes, the stock footage is annoying, but beyond that i have no problems. There is so much heart in this movie, these are some of my favourite characters in a Godzilla movie yet. And while i love the tragedy of it, i also think a lot of the comedy is great. The thieves are hilarious. But i guess where it failed was in the monster department and that WILL damage a Godzilla movie. But if you look at it, not as a monster movie, but as a normal kids movie with Godzilla in it, its actually a masterpiece. Okay, maybe not a masterpiece, but still great.
