Plutonium Baby (1987)
One of the funniest films I've ever seen.
I've read peoples comments about how this is 'this'.....'that' and whatever. Do not try to take this film seriously - the makers don't so why should we. Its just a complete joke, but because of that you can laugh the entire way through.
Its full of all the horror clichés - woman tripping without obstacles nearby etc. There is a classic line, at one point one of the actors (i use the term loosely) says something like 'Jeez man, it feels like I'm trapped in some kind of B-Horror Movie.' - somehow he manages to keep a straight face.
There is also one point, which lasts for like 10 mins, where the evil guy is limping across the screen saying 'Danny', 'Danny' in somekind of stereotypical evil voice - pure comedy genius.
All in all. I wouldn't miss this, I laughed from start to finish.
Ripley's Game (2002)
Strange
I found this film a little bemusing.
Firstly I don't think Trevanny would kill just because he is dying. The casting of Winston as Reeves was a mistake. The Ripley in the books would not have associated with someone as 'common' and 'foolhardy' as Winstons portrayal.
The killing of the man in the insect zoo looked unrealistic and false. The book's version of a man being shot in a packed underground station with a hidden gun from point blank range is far more believable. The three killings on the train where again highly unbelievable. Nobody saw it? Trevanny had a gun clearly drawn for about 3 mins - it simply doesn't provide a convincing scenario. Also are we to believe that Ripley didn't check the bodies to make sure they were dead before he left the toilet? the book deals with this much more convincingly. Ripley throws the men from the carriage and is under pressure to do it quick so it is possible for one of the bodyguards to survive.
Surely with such a big cast the budget of this film was high, yet if you didn't know any better the film looks 20 years old (I'm sure this is the desired effect but for me it just looks badly done) and the dialogue (especially Trevanny) is at times laughable. I thought Scotts portrayal of Trevany was weak.
The direction and cinematography of the Talented MR Ripley for out weighs this film. The film is set in a beautiful part of Italy (the books of course set in France) yet the director showed very few wonderful backdrops and scenery unlike TTMR.
Also isn't this meant to be set in the 60/70's? if so why are people using mobile phones?
AAargh, I had real high hopes for this film, I feel truly let down.
