Frankenstein (2004)
1/10
Faithful to the original. but very stupid.
8 August 2006
While it is true that this film is a lot like the book, it just does not make cinematic sense( or any other sort of sense either. It is painful to watch. The creature is just not that ugly. ve seen people look worse after a weekend bender. WHY exactly does everyone fear him as though he was shedding his skin? And the genius Viktor is so totally stupid that he just can't help pissing off the murderous creature and then putting his loved ones conveniently in its path and running off somewhere so that it can have an easy uninterrupted go of it. The creature isn't that convincing. Its only real argument is that it had to kill people no matter how harmless because he was angry at other people. It never explains just why it never harmed anyone that actually mocked it, just people that did absolutely nothing to it whatsoever. The most silly part is where Viktor runs after a beggar(even though the beggar is half of the creatures size and obviously human)can conveniently walk through a door and kill her without breaking a sweat. It is also inexplicable why Viktor could simply make sure that the creatures mate was unable to reproduce instead of torching her in front of the monster. Its rather predictable what would happen next. Viktor even conveniently screams NOOOOOOOOOO instead of shooting at it so that it could run away and seek vengeance. Please do not watch without a barf bag handy.

I'm glad to see that a lot of people liked it too!
11 May 2006
I notice that most people commenting got into this fun, light hearted, enjoyable movie. The movie is a blatant homage to shows like Indiana Jones, and the spear of destiny does look like it came out of a Happy meal. But that just adds to the fun. The special effects are quite good, and the research into various mythology is quite impressive. Its such a pleasure to finally find a show that doesn't deal with dark unhappy subject matter. You actually feel good after watching this film. Whoever made it should be proud. I advise everyone to see this movie. Unless you just can't let go and have some fun. Its easy to tell. If you are sitting there thinking "Librarians don't go on magical adventures!" Then you are not going to like this film. But Ill tell you this; This film is about as realistic as most cop shows out there. CSI isn't really how investigations re run either.

If you want to see Pride and Prejudice see the Collin Firth version

Because the story is compelling, and they kept the dialog almost exactly the same as its predecessor, the whole thing wasn't too painful to watch. It got bad when Kiera Knightly with her wimpy demeanor and little girl lost voice spoke. Elizabeth Bennet went from spunky to bratty. Her ideals went from wanting to help her family but being unwilling to compromise her heart to simply not wanting to do what anyone said like a little two year old. I kept expecting her to pout and throw her peas at Mr Darcy, whose name escapes me. He was OK. Donald Sutherland seemed more like he was one of the three musketeers. In fact all the costumes were a bit off and very lavish instead of the rather plain white empire waisted dresses typical of the time. I can see little girls, middle aged ladies, and anyone that spends a good deal of time at the shopping mall enjoying this movie.

Intervention (2005– )
Unlike good reality TV it starts out very interesting and goes downhill.
2 January 2006
The first episode I saw I found endearing in a black and white kind of way. I never felt the addicts were in any real danger, probably because it was being stated in such an over the top way that I couldn't relate. The statements like all addicted people will end up dead unless they get treatment. Well yes, we will all die, and there is no treatment for it, sadly. But what does that statement mean? No one has a directory of all addicts. The only ones we notice are the ones that are in desperate need of help, likely. I agree that an addict can die, depending on circumstances and should receive treatment. Most people already do; So no need to treat us all like we are in the middle school gym being lectured on the dangers of drugs and alcohol. Surely a human being in psychological peril is more intricate then a few pat phrases.

I would be very interested if they showed cases of different nature, not just ones where the poor addict is tearfully begging everyones forgiveness when they are told that they don't shine anymore, and are mysteriously ruining the entire economy of the nation by purchasing a relatively cheap substance.

I don't think this show's concept is bad at all. But I want something that is more realistic and less predictable. At least in the fellow reality show "Dog the bounty hunter" where you can tell who the bounty is because they wear black leather and gloves with no fingers even if they are just convicted of traffic violation, you have a charismatic host. No such luck here.

Roar (1997)
Easier to watch paint dry.
23 December 2005
This is not the worst show I have ever seen. The dialog wasn't terrible, there are no fight scenes to screw up, the plot is never complicated enough to go wrong. The thing is that the show is so unambitious its hard to figure out why they made it at all. The subject matter we have all seen before. It shows up all the time even though I'm not sure there is much historical evidence for it. Irish-Good. Roman-bad. If you took Braveheart and pretended the English were Romans, and stretched it out to several months you would probably have the exact same thing.

The cast is reasonably attractive, and the actors are obviously talented as we find out later when they use their abilities in later and better work. Other then that..well, you have to be somewhat dramatic to to act out drama.

The Prophecy: Forsaken (2005 Video)
10/10
This and Uprising need to be seen back to back.
26 November 2005
They were made back to back and are basically one story. Just told in two parts. One of the things I like about the post Christopher Walkin Prophecy movies is that they are not a replica of every other Stephen King inspired "Devil in our back yard" movies. I'm not saying that is bad. Its just over done. The antichrist is always in a medium sized American suburb with nice normal middle class parents. Its nice to see a more global perspective. Not everything happens in middle class America. The underlying question of these movies is whether there can be such a thing as blind faith. The devil puts it best by saying you always have to ask why. The movie is cool. It is spooky in a way. But it will not scare you. It isn't trying to. So if you are looking fora horror film this is not for you. I would still suggest you see it, just to realize that the subject of revelations isn't just there to scare us. It can inspire us too.

Project Greenlight (2001–2023)
This is absurd, I know nothing of movies, but I am a fan of the genre to some extent, and I can tell a loser when I see one.
7 August 2005
I could not believe they actually chose the person and the script they did. It obviously had to be a set up. I found myself cheering for the people that made good(or at least better) choices against the wimpy, whinny directors wishes. He had no vision of the script, his response to every thing was "I don't know what I'm looking for, but I'll know when I see it". I'm sure he had no clue what he was looking for, but I'm equally sure he wouldn't know a good thing if it bit him in his considerably large back end. This is just another reality show, which is too bad. And the griping about Miramax/Disney politics seemed very play acted to me. There couldn't be an ounce of the real thing here. I only feel sorry for the talented people that probably tried to get a break from this staged nonsense.

Be Cool (2005)
10/10
This movie is funny!
15 July 2005
The film doesn't have the novelty of its prequel, so you know whats coming at you. That doesn't stop this film from making you laugh until your eyes water. Despite you totally expecting the joke from a mile a head, it still cracks you up. The most questionable thing about the film is probably John Travolta's seriously overdone interpretation of Chili. He nails it the first time, and has a bit of trouble duplicating. But Travoltas spotty performance is made up for by great writing. The plot is tight and fresh, the dialogue terrific, and the cameos handled better then I thought possible. Usually cameos are by definition awkward and silly. But in 'Be cool' they capture the name dropping feeling of Hollywood and make you feel like you are in on the joke. If you like silliness, and enjoy a complex plot, this movie is fun.

Charmed (1998–2006)
The show does so little research, that it tend to make itself foolish.
3 December 2004
I don't expect a ton of historical accuracy when dealing with legends like leprechons, Cupid, and demons, but the writers of this show know less then an average fifth grader. The acting is pretty uninspired. Worst of all, the sisters are so powerful, that the demons have no chance. The three witches screech at the demons as if they were little girls frightened by a household pest, throw up their hands, and the demons disappear. The whole confrontation takes a second. The fact that the demons think they could possibly have a chance is a mystery. Even the episode leading to the death of one of the sisters made no sense at all. It was clear that the character died so that the real life actress could be replaced. There have recently been some successful shows in this genre, and this is an attempt to capitalize on the success of shows like "Buffy" and "Smallville". Do yourself a favor and watch one of those instead of this mindless fare.

Maestro (2003)
I liked it, despite the obviously small budget.
26 August 2004
I can see someone expecting a movie to have more frills. But, I liked the candor, incidental humor, and information the flick provided. True, the movie makes more of itself then it is, but then, what DJ doesn't? It kind of fits together. And in spite of the aggrandizement, comes off as endearing. The styles the subjects wear are worth something just by themselves. If you really want a movie that follows the rules of great movie making, this might not be for you. But if you can put worth on hanging out in a reliably hip neighborhood, and meeting the denizens, without the drawbacks of having to meet them, I think you will be glad you gave this film a chance. Levine himself has an interesting story, worth hearing.

How Do I Look? (2004– )
this show is a sexist endorsement for everyone looking like they are in a soap opera.
14 August 2004
The format of the show is actually pretty clever. I could see liking it if not for one thing- the hostess. Despite her correct English, and stuffy demeanor, Finola Hughes exhibits some of the worst manners, and mean spirited attitude I have eve seen. Shows like 'Punked' are much more kind to those they prank then Finola is to the already somewhat meek contestants. She eggs on a boyfriend to tell his girlfriend that she must dress to make the other men jealous of him, or he doesn't want to be with her. She insinuates that people who wear black are depressed. She makes it seem like it's normal for people to ridicule someone who doesn't wear high heels and tight clothing most of the time. In my experience, you are far more likely to be hassled if you can't bend over safely. If you have children, DO NOT let them watch this show. It teaches them to be judgmental bully's, and boring dressers, all at once. The show isn't even informative. The clothing collections are not cutting edge, by any means. They are clearly aimed at a suburban comfort zone. Which also would be fine, if the hostess didn't pronounce her judgments with the spirit of a true bully.
