I'm a long standing David Lynch fan, and loved all his work throughout the 90s and really couldn't get enough.
I see that there's lots of Lynch fans saying Inland Empire is his best work. It might be for all I know. I started tuning out at around 1:40, and that's just the halfway mark. The excellent cast and superb acting may have had more to do with keeping my attention.
I think I may have hit a saturation point with the final episode of Twin Peaks Part 2. The reason for that is the same reason I tuned out of Inland Empire; Lynch's 21st Century work suffers from a deadly lack of cohesion.
I see fans talk about "getting it" at a subconscious level. My problem is when there's no framework holding the plot together It's impossible for me to maintain focus. And this film goes on for over three hours, which also struck me as indulgent.
