a bad film
27 September 2014
i just got done watching this train wreck of a film and it is beyond awful. i've never seen a Charlie Chan film until i saw this one. and i love Boris Karloff as well. his scenes as it's been stated are very brief with him having very little dialog. The Directing is quite good actually. that's about the only nice thing i can say about it.

as a film it's badly written, badly acted and for a Charlie Chan film even if it's based off the original books he's not even in the film at all until 78 minutes in and has like 3 minutes of screen time.

he's barely even mentioned at all in the film even when he's not on screen. i've seen plenty of films from this era where the acting was really quite good. only other films i've seen from this period that i can think of from the top of my head are some of the crap that Joan Crawford was doing during this era. way before she got famous into what she later became. anyways. the acting is so bad that it reminds me of the B movies that were coming out in the 50's that you'd have to get drunk just to get through watching it cause on how bad they are.

i do plan on watching other Chan films of course but please stay away from this one unless you are a die hard Chan fan than watch it. but be warned that it's badly acted, badly written and frankly rather boring as well. my score 1/10

Sin's Pay Day (1932)
10/10
A Nice Little Gem of a film.
28 July 2013
i also saw this film. it wasn't under "Sin's Pay Day' as the original title but the re-issue tittle of Slums Of New York' honestly the original title is better. in (1938) it was put out again and the copy i have has Mickey Rooney as the star when he's clearly not the star of the film.

it was cause he was a star at the time they put this out again. actually i believe he's credited Mickey McGuire in the original print. that print may be lost. but the re-issue clearly isn't. thank god for that. the previews Reviewer is Correct the law is totally different in (1932) than it is today. Mickey Rooney has a decent Size Role in it. and he's quite good. the print i saw was in terrible shape and it did skip. and the sound was off as well. but i'm not complaining that much cause it exists so that's all i care about.

the acting for everyone is top notch for my guess this B film that was made. Bess Flowers the legendary Extra who has done it is said over 1200 films is also in it. if you can find yourself a copy of it i highly recommend it.

A Decent Little Short
1 October 2011
I just got done watching this & you know what? it's not that great of a

short film. i loved the narration by the late & great & Underrated "John

Carradine" but the artwork wasn't that great.

nor was the story as good as say the (1949) "Disney" film but seeing as this was only 13 minutes. that can easily be forgiven. it's a decent

little film. that i don't think i really need to get into if you know

the story. but it's not a terrible little short either.

anyways i give it a 5/10 cause it was halfway decent. but not good enough that i'd watch it again.

An Extremely BAD SHORT! (Spoiler Alert!)
22 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This one is an Extremely BAD short! my copy of it pretty bad. the sound effects on it are in pretty good shape. but when each character speaks you can barely hear what they say, MAINLY because of the age of this short. & also due to the fact that nobody has yet to discover this GREAT Series to remaster it. nobody seems to care about it. ONLY for those who are DIE HARD Mickey Rooney Fans really care.

the plot from what i gather is mickey & the gang trying to clear 2 bums names when Stinky Davis gives them two old suits of his father & him NOT knowing about it promptly reports it. as anyone would. and all chaos ensues. they somehow end up in this doctors office. i'm NOT sure why they went there because again of the sound quality. but they soon discover the doctor is a hack who's into making fools of people and taking their money. it NEVER really says IF he gets caught or not because the shorts promptly ends. in all a extremely BORING short. my score? 2/10

A Decent Effort For an Early Short In The Series. Spoilers!
17 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a decent little short from the early days of "Rooney" :) in it he and his pals play a game of football. at the start of this short they are just playing for fun. but than Stinky Davis as always has nothing better to do with his time & spies on McGuire & the Gang. so he decides to play a few pranks on them. comedy ensues. & than in the last half of this short Stinky & his gang of misfits decide as always to cheat on the game of football. but in the end Mickey & the gang wins the game as always because they play fair & don't break the rules when a simple game of football occures. a decent effort for a short.

it's one of the first "Mickey McGuire" Shorts that was released. & this one is on DVD IF you can find it. over all i recommend it. i'll give it a

7/10 it's also NOT a bad silent film.

A Short, Short One (Spoiler Alert)
10 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This one's a Decent Effort. it's NOT a great one NOR a bad one either.

because the copy i've got of it is about 7 or 8 minutes long. & it's cut meaning half of it is either lost, or there's a copy of it

somewhere around but nobody's found it yet. it's looks like it would be a good one though. I Give it a 3/10 because it's cut & the WHOLE short isn't included. just a few minutes of it.

it's from what I Gather about Uncle Nemo getting framed for Stealing chickens. & that's Hambone's Uncle for those who haven't seen the series. Hambone Johnson is kinda like the 'Alfa' of the gang the black comedy relief. anyways, it turns out it's Stinky's limo driver in the end & he gets caught & thrown in jail & Mickey & The gang save the day as always.

A Decent Effort! Spoiler Alert
9 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This one is a decent effort. it's NOT bad but it's NOT one of the better ones either. it's about the gang putting on their own little show which reminds of the "Babes In Arms" movies Mickey was to do a few years later. him being the leader of the gang & nobody caring if he is

or not. & when Stinky Davis finds out he as usual finds ways to make Mick's life hell. & at the end is a funny scene where little Billy

locks Stinky & his father into an empty lion's cage & Stinky getting Spanked for once! :) for getting his NEW Radio destroyed! it's HARD to believe that when you watch these episodes and the "Our Gang" shorts that they did this kind of comedy with kids. you can't do that today without causing a BIG DEAL from either the parents or people in general which makes these shorts so special! they can make you laugh until you cry! ya know My Rate 5/10

A Decent Short!!
8 October 2006
This is the Last one in This GREAT Series. no matter what IMDb Says THIS is the last one. the one that they have called "Mickey's Derby Day" i believe is the film "Mickey's Race" (1933) i believe? & that's a cute one & Quite GOOD! but as for this one it's NOT as good as the previous comment says. it's NOT bad but it's NOT as good as some of the other ones. there is some funny parts in it. & IF you want spoiler's you can just read his or hers? in short it's a shame that for a GREAT series like this you can kids tell WHY they stopped making this series. i think the writing wasn't as sharp as it used to be. & it's a shame as well. they NEEDED a MUCH BETTER writer for this one & under-used Billy Barty in this one i think. since it was the last they SHOULD have used him MORE! my comment 4/10

This one's a Stinker as well (Spoiler)
8 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is another bad one in this this GREAT SERIES! i don't know IF this would be considered a spoiler or not but it just has The Gang in school again. so far this is the 2nd episode that i've seen them in school! this one & (1927)'s "Mickey's In School" THAT one is a "CLASSIC"! THIS one isn't. it has them putting on some kind of play. & for me is Quite boring. IMDb has Billy Barty listed in the credits but he's nowhere to be seen in this one. they had no need for him is my guess. since he's normally in the out of school shorts they had no need for him in this one. so for those who keep track of "Billy Barty's" movies he's NOT in this one folks.

This One is an OK effort (Spoiler)
8 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This One's isn't a Silent Either! it's a Decent Little Short that was a tad boring for my taste. i don't know why it's marked as being a silent cause it isn't. anyways, it's about Mickey & The Gang going Exploring on a boat well 1st getting their hands on a boat to go exploring. it NEVER says HOW they get one though. & than a couple funny moments on their quest when they find this supposely island i am guessing? they go looking for Indian's & they find them! they could be just 2 guys dressed as Indian's because there's ONLY 2 of them & NOT a tribe but than i could be wrong on them NOT being Indian's. anywys it's an OK effort My Score 3./10

A Great & Classic Episode Here Folks! :)
8 October 2006
THIS One is a CLASSIC Folks! And Secondly here's another problem with the internet movie data base. since they've NEVER seen this one and it's NOT their fault either. i'll give them that, they have this one listed from (1928) but it's NOT made in that year. IF you watch it it's a talkie and it's listed in the WRONG YEAR! the release date says (1934) & the month & date it even came out but yet it says (1928)? WRONG! the year that it was made it came out in (1934) and by that time Mickey wasn't going by McGuire anymore he was going by Rooney. he had been going by that name for about 2 or so years when this short came out originally. either way i give the short a 10/10 & for the plot? i'm sorry but i'm in the middle of watching a Bunch of different shorts from this GREAT & under-rated series i plumb forgot it. perhaps someday i'll add one here! for those who want one i'll just watch it again & post one & OR you still want one just send me a private message & i can just re-watch it & send the plot to you. :)

A Decent Short With The Great Mickey Rooney
8 October 2006
1stly let me say that This isn't a talkie it's a silent. the IMDb Information is WRONG On This One Folks anyways, in this one i did't much care for it. a few good gags though. a good bit with a horse shoe though

& that's about it though. that's what made me laugh the HARDEST! I'd give a plot on this one but there really isn't none. it's just them Goofing around & that's about it. my score 5/10 & For Those Who Are Die Hard

Rooney Fan's like I am it may NOT be his Best movie or short in this case but it's STILL worth a look in either Buying OR just watching. & you can Quote me on that folks. :)

A Day in School With Mickey Rooney (Spoiler)
8 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a fun short that Mickey did when he 8 years old at the time. it's my guess one of the MOST RAREST films that he ended up doing since it's a silent film & ALL! most people these days ignore him as an actor they pay attention to the people we get stuck seeing & forget that Mickey Rooney was once a STAR! & it's a shame that he's NOT doing anything BIG like he did in the old days of movies. back when he was at MGM. meaning good scripts, good directors & good cast to boot.

for those who want to know about this little film here, it's about Mickey & The Gang going to school & Mickey Seeming to get into all kinds of trouble with the teacher. & she herself being part of the gag as well. :) & than she sends she sooner or later sends everyone to recess & a chunk of wood i think it was? it gets caught into the school furnace & Mickey & the gang & also for a change with a little help from their arch enemy, sorry for misspelling here. his enemy Stinky yes Stinky. that's his name indeed. they get together & help rescue the staff of the school & even end up putting out the fire themselves. the adults in this series is mostly here for comedy. & they really aren't shown much at all. i have yet to see who Mickey & His little Brother Billy played by the late & Great "Billy Barty" parents show up. anyways for this short i give it a 10/10

a terrible film
10 July 2006
i had wanted to see this film for MANY YEARS! well Mainly cause John Carradine was in it. & it was a movie that i was curious to see? & no need to say who's 1st film it was! :) well one of his 1st films i mean. & i was QUITE bored watching it. the acting was as BAD as it got! & i

actually almost bought this piece of crap of a film on DVD a few years ago. & NOW I'm glad i did NOT! so anyone who hasn't seen this film, watch it only for curiosity, NOT cause people have said it's good. & the 2nd reason i forgot to mention was the #1 reason i watched it off Cable was it's an Early film that "Roger The Man Corman" produced when he had NOT long before had quit directing films.

A Great Film!
9 March 2006
By Far MY FAVORITE MR movie that he's done in his Career surpassing "The Black Stallion which is an OK film i think. NOT GREAT but an OK

film. but as for MR other than this film "Mad World" & "Boys Town" this is my Favorite Rooney Film!

& As Another Reader has said this IS JG & MR BEST Film BY FAR & i think it has the BEST Soundtrack as well. & The BEST ENDING I LOVE seeing Mickey playing the Drums, i wish THAT he would have done it MORE often

than in this film & in (1951)'s B-Movie "The Strip" which isn't a bad movie in itself either. A Great Film & one can see Why MR was at this time the #1 attraction in the world surpassing Even The Great "Clark

Gable"! :) among other actors & actress's of that era. & i can't wait till MR's NEW movie that he's doing with Dick Van Dyke to come out. the two haven't done a film since (1969)'s "The Comic" WHICH i have yet to

see for myself either. :( BUT IF one wants to start with a MR movie & becoming a fan of his early work or maybe even his later work such as (1981)'s (TVM) "Bill" than They Should start with this one IF they want to start with his Early work.

My Rate of this WONDERFUL FILM 10/10
