Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Sick of watching the same movie? So am I. Thank you Waititi
I had sworn not give a penny more to Marvel/Disney after Multiverse of Madness. Luckily, a movie critic recommended this assuring me that this time it worked.
Beautiful colours (and even beautiful when they're not there, eat your heart out Zack Snyder). Such a fun adventure with a cast that keeps it moving but giving it time to more heartfelt scenes.
As it happens with a lot of movies that want to target as broad an audience as possible, sometimes the female leads/villains are """empowered""" but through classic male gaze (or even worse, using maternity as the end all be all for motivation). This movie just flows naturally, it cherishes its characters and doesn't make a mockery out of anything, while still poking fun at the genre and the tropes.
The music might feel a bit overused, but if you enjoy eighties movies, this might be right up your alley.
Mythology nerd? This movie got you covered, with winks here and there.
Not completely caught up with the MCU/previous Thor movies? The recap at the beginning is the best one I've seen so far. No two characters giving expository dialogue, it's just performance within a performance.
It's an adventure comedy and I'm quite baffled at the amount of negative reviews accusing the movie of... being... too funny? It was such a fun and genuine experience.
I just hope other people can see the difference in mediums and watch this movie for what it is and not for what they wish it had been.
Fantasy Island (2020)
So much fun
I was expecting more of a horror flick so it turned out surprising me by not ticking every trope in the book. It keeps you guessing; but most importantly, it's a nice looking and very fun movie.
It sometimes falls on the camp-ish side of things and the plot can get a bit contrived, so I get the bad reviews, but still, you can really appreciate it for what it is and just enjoy the ride.
Not really spoiler, but ish if you're very finicky about them:
I'd say the last third is its weakest, but the build up is really nice. There is one missed opportunity which I think might have fallen on the edit room.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Just don't. Girl boss version of "we live in a society".
I give it a three because it's not incompetent. Another review said the ending makes it make sense. It doesn't. It tries to make a point about poetic justice. It doesn't.
Don't bother with this, it's a waste of character actors. Save yourself from the cringe.
On the bright side, Jennifer (the old lady) is great. And the fact that everyone is awful does keep you guessing on who you're supposed to relate to as an audience, that's an interesting take on a plot, and a gutsy attempt at working through a story while asking the spectator to avoid empathy. It does keep you guessing. But when it tells you the answer, you want to punch it in the face.
Rhinestone (1984)
Cute rom-com with some wacky acting
You get exactly what you expect. There's Stallone trying on silly outfits, being an all around Italian New Yorker and hitting it on with Dolly to the sound of country music. A lovely ride. The acting is over the top, and sometimes goes all around bonkers, specially with the F.U. character (which btw, gotta love that name), but it still manages to keep a sincere tone. The music is lovely and the photography can get really beautiful at times, with some soft lightning and letting the intimacy play while still being fun.
The amount of 1-star-reviews makes me think that most people couldn't go past the ten-minute-mark, which I believe is when you get some of the actors doing their most scenery-chewing. I don't think it's a masterpiece, nor a piece of trash.
Is good at what it wants to do and it has a lot of heart.
Hello, Privilege. It's Me, Chelsea (2019)
Not enough depth, but it's a good start
I found this a really naive, yet sincere take on Chelsea's own experience with race. She's very honest about her ignorance and she does reach to people of colour to hear them out, if in a bit of an exploitative way. A woman at the poetry slam she went said it best "the fact that you're making this is white privilege".
I loved the contrast between what the republican ladies were saying and what the guys from Tennessee said. The rapper saying he was the top of the white trash and then being so articulate and thoughtful was a great sequence.
