The Haunted Hathaways (2013)
Painful To Sit Through
It seems as if nickelodeon is on the downhill slide as far as shows go these last couple seasons. The Haunted Hathaways is just in a long line of poor writing, poor acting, and poor editing. I barely made it through a 30 minute time slot before shutting the TV off in relief, but felt I should have to make it through at least one episode before reviewing.
Basically, a mother and her two daughters move into a home haunted by a man and his two sons. Certainly not a new premise.
Perhaps the worst portion of the show is the writing. The lines are cheesy and cliché and delivered by utterly terrible actors and actresses. Each failed joke and over exaggerated motion is accompanied by canned laughter from a pitiful laugh track. Not far on its heels is the acting itself. Each line is squealed or screamed or delivered with excess facial expression and hand motion. I cringed watching the Awkward and unnatural interactions between the characters.
In short, I don't recommend this TV show for anyone, not even the littlest kids.
After Earth (2013)
Where Is All This Negativity Coming From?
After the low rating and bad reviews, I came very close to not seeing this movie. Taking the plunge, I'm extremely glad I did! I'm honestly shocked at the low rating and poor reviews. While perhaps not Oscar-worthy, it was engaging, fun, and adventurous throughout. When going to see an M. Night Shaymalan sci-fi movie starring Will and Jaden Smith ... What exactly did those people think they were watching?
I won't bother with storyline, as its easy enough to read the summary. But I will say, the chemistry between Will and Jaden Smith is excellent. All too often we are treated to movie family members that don't even seem to exist in the same world, awkward and strange around one another. Even in the Smiths' supposed-to-be-awkward moments, the bond between them in undeniable, and it really sets a third dimension to the movie.
The graphics are good, not perfect but believable and the world created is fascinating and engaging. Jaden had a couple bumpy scenes at the very beginning but quickly settled into his lead role and I found myself cheering for him to succeed. I even got a lump in my throat once or twice. Will Smith was excellent as usual as a strict commandeering father trying to guide his son.
In short, it is definitely worth seeing and will have a place on my movie shelf in the future. Don't listen to all the bad reviews - see it for yourself!
