Big Mouth: Panic! At the Mall (2023)
9 for Caleb
I was a huge fan of season 1. I still enjoy the show somewhat but the quality has been unstable for a while.
This Episode is the first time since the shame wizard and Bernie I feel a new componenthas been added that totally fits and adds to the quality of the show. The focus on Caleb was very refreshing and funny. I was pleasantly surprised. The dynamic between him and Matthew was very wholesome and sweet.
I have some issues myself and although not totally similar to Caleb it was cool to see a POV of a character like him. It felt different and faithful without abandoning the premise and structure of the show. This was some quality stuff.
Outlast (2023)
The bad reviews are right and so are the good ones
Let's get the obvious stuff out of the way. Yes, Jill is clearly the villain of the show and I get why people had a tough time watching it.
I think most viewers were expecting something else from the premise. But, and here comes the important part, if you except what this show becomes it's really entertaining. If you are able to see (and maybe find a way to enjoy) Jill as a villain on a TV show, you have to admit, she does a hell of a job at it.
Sure, not everybody likes to see people treating others like they are in Lord Of The Flies, but frankly, it gives this show a more (or maybe too) realistic twist. Under other conditions, in a real survival situation it would be likely that people would turn on each other. They would use short cuts. Not all people want to see stuff like that in a reality show but I'm sure not the only one gets something out of it.
In real life, I want nothing to do with Jill but she can do other reality formats for as long as she wants. I love to hate her.
Ozark: Kaleidoscope (2017)
Just for people who love flashbacks
If you were missing something on Ozark so far or needed explanation this is an episode for you.
For everyone else, they can skip it.
I personally hate it, when a show with good writing does Flashbacks like this but I guess some people appreciate them. I don't.
I like to think, personally. And I like some things up for interpretation or imagination.
Thank you Netflix for the fast forward Option. Now back to the story please.
Watchmen: This Extraordinary Being (2019)
Great ending. The first 50 minutes Flashback by Captain Exposition.
I know. People seem to love this episode. So my opinion will be unpopular. Oh well...
Lindelof must have a thing for flashbacks. Maybe he got it doing Lost. Maybe he had it before. I don't know. And I don't get why, either. You are grabbed and pulled out of a narrative you probably enjoy and forced to follow a different one til it's time you are allowed back. Sometimes it might be necessary but I usually don't see the need. I liked Lost in spite of the character flashbacks not because of them and they usually felt too long and there was too much Exposition. I like to think for myself and I don't need detailed answers to every question I might not even have.
That must be a big reason, I think this episode was the worst yet. I liked to see the Don Johnson thing from a different perspective and some of the stuff with Reeves, his family and his struggle as a crime fighter were nice. But I could have done without a lot of the details and I am actually a little sad I know so much about his life by this point.
With that said I have nothing bad to say about the production. Camera, acting and music were very good. But I really didn't need a 50 minutes mini movie about Wheelchair Justice's origin story. 10-15 minutes would have been fine. The pilot did a much better job for me.
Now let's get back to Redneck Mirrorface, Nun-Fu McWhatsmypast, Special Agent Smartypants and the rest of the gang, please.
Thank you.
PS: No hard feelings, Mr Lindelof. Sorry for that. Great show so far.
Watchmen (2019)
The original Watchmen was about contemporary politics. And so is this.
I have the feeling that some of the people who are disappointed with this show may have not understood the point of Watchmen as a story about the cold war.
The cold war is over and the creators decided to expand the brand to make a story about modern society. Call it woke as much as you want, but if you complain about Watchmen having a political agenda... That's the point.
I really like the show so far (Episode 4). They have put some thought into the world after the events during the original comic series. The acting is good and the show doesn't insult it's audiences intelligence.
If you just want a retelling of the original, go watch Zach Snyder's movie. It's pretty good.
