Father of Lies (2007)
Production plagues promise...
The storyline in this movie is an interesting concept and presents some unique challenges for the filmmaker. Unfortunately, this movie is plagued with some very serious production problems: the main one being sound quality and secondly, inconsistent video quality in the different scenes.
There are times in the movie where it seems like there is only one microphone and it has to be shared amongst the actors. There are even a couple of scenes where you almost have to strain to hear all of the conversation spoken. The inconsistency in video quality is also frustrating; some scenes look washed out while others almost rival big-production films.
The premise in the movie was very interesting and even promising. The idea of an African-American church becoming involved with Muslim enterprises such as terrorism, weapons distribution, and the annihilation of the Christian faith was handled clumsily and at times seemed disconnected.
Some of the acting performances (mostly beginners) were overdone which only added to the amateurish feel of the movie. Because of the technical and production problems in the movie, I find it difficult to recommend this film.
Employee of the Month (2004)
Very good and surprising movie
I found this movie to be very intriguing and engaging. The story about a man whose seemingly perfect life is turned upside down in one day had my attention from the beginning. The more the story developed (especially the conversation between David and the prostitute in the motel room) the more I began to feel for the main character. I found myself feeling sorry for what he went through and pulling for him to turn it around only to discover that it was all a stunt, a "cover job" if you will.
The surprising plot at the end of the movie is unexpected and is sure to raise some eyebrows on how the movie ends. Jack, although vulgar and offensive, is an amazing character and Steve Zahn did a wonderful performance portraying him.
