Pan (2015)
Paradise Lost...... Badly
This is the story of a movie that could have, would have, should have but didn't.
Pan had all the raw elements to be a great reinterpretation of a modern classic (Peter Pan for those who don't know), but unfortunately failed to tie those elements together with any coherence.
Good animation, decent premise for a fantasy world, some good acting (especially Levi Miller and Hugh Jackman) couldn't save this movie from below average script writing and overall story.
The script was loose and downright cheesy on occasions (Tiger Lilly and Hook romance anyone). Scenes from the movie seemed to be added in just to fill time and added nothing to the overall story. To top it off the movie steered us slowly and drearily towards an ending which grew ever and ever more predictable.
My advice to any adult considering watching this movie would be.... don't. There are plenty of better uses for your time and money.
You Don't Mess with the Zohan (2008)
A Rollicking Romp
Humor is all about taste, and if you're the type who can engage in willful suspension of disbelief and appreciate over the top antics, this movie is your gold mine.
High tempo from the very beginning this movie never lets up with a succession of comic action sequences punctuated with jokes ,that if you are in the mood for, are really funny. A humorous, politically incorrect take at the situation in the Gaza which gives all that it portends to, a lot of laughs.
Long story short, if there is a child in you watch this film. If not stay far away.
Waar (2013)
Are People Blind or Just Dumb
This movie has been afforded an atrociously high rating that is not in the least warranted, for was it warranted, this movie would surpass the likes of The Prestige, Blood Diamond, The Gladiator, 12 Angry Men and all the rest of the IMDb top 250.
Unfortunately this is simply not the case. I am a Pakistani, and while this movie deserves respect as a product of our local movie industry, it simply is decidedly average when it comes to objective cinematic criticism.
Bilal Lashari should not even attempt to tie shoelaces for Nolan, Spielberg, Aronofsky or any of Hollywoods good directors for he simply has not the ability. The cinematographers should really commit never to assaulting audiences with their talents ever again, for apart from a couple of sequences the camera work consisted of dramatic closeups reminiscent of Star Plus dramas rather than a feature length production.
The acting was bearable from a portion of the cast whereas some dabblers who existed to give this film commercial appeal ( take a bow Ali Azmat and Meesha Shafi) were completely out of their depth. The special effects while considerably above par as far as Pakistani cinema is concerned were the work of 2nd grade drop outs when compared to modern Hollywood cinema, often looking decidedly cheap and cheesy. Add to this an average plot with its fair share of holes and you have the masterpiece that has our local audience raving to the point of hysteria.
The movie has a decent soundtrack and some good performances, however for a serious watcher and not a simple patriot, this movie was a waste of both time and money.
Django Unchained (2012)
Better uses for my time
I could have...... washed my dirty laundry...... played with my neighbors dog.......brought out my cleats and kicked a ball around.......... but unfortunately I did none of these things and chose to watch "Django Unchained" instead.
Why people tout this movie as a work of genius is beyond me. A 3 hour long runtime was hardly justified for the material at hand. The story is predictable and the characters (barring Stevens and Calvin) pretentiously self-righteous and boring.
While the film did possess panache in delivery, as all Tarantinos do, it lacked a central character and premise strong enough to make it engaging. The intelligent script and characterization that is a hallmark of films such as "Reservoir Dogs", "Pulp Fiction", "Death Proof" etc is dampened due to Django's portrayal as a virtual mute with an attitude.
Bottom line is, there are a lot of things that you can do in 3 hours, make sure you do them.
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)
A romp through the yard
I went into this film with high expectations, who could not, on the back of such films as "The Goodfellas", "The Departed", "Casino", "The Aviator" .... the list goes on, very few would say that Martin Scorsese is not one of Hollywood's legendary directors.
However, where this film fell short as opposed to the others was the story line (or lack thereof). The story follows the life of our protagonist, excellently played by Leonardo Dicaprio as a hedonistic product of the underbelly of Wall Street. What follows is three hours of drugs, sex and non-stop mayhem.
The seriousness, the pathos, the intensity which could have been imparted into this film to help us connect with Jordan Belfort were all missing. As such this movie became a circus without a soul.
While these comments may sound harsh, i do not mean to say that there were no redeeming qualities to this experience. Insofar as raw entertainment, acting prowess, cinematography this movie was top tier. However it just doesn't have the heart to measure up to it's predecessors.
