Waist Deep (2006)
How did this film ever get made?
Okay maybe my title is a little harsh, but this film was trash. It had some potential, but poor scripting, forced emotional moments that were anything but emotional, and poor direction left this film stale. At best it feels like a knock off of other black films. At its worst it is nonsensical stereotypical drivel that might pass for a Tubi film nowadays. There are some good actors in this project, and by good I mean Meagan Good. This has to be Larenz Tates worst project. And Tyrese comes across as trying to recapture his character from Baby Boy. I wanted to like this film. It came out in a season where I didn't watch many movies. So was hoping for nostalgia and not a tragedy, or tragically made film.
White Men Can't Jump (2023)
Not as good as the original but entertaining nonetheless
Not sure why people hating on this film. It was entertaining. Nothing revolutionary, but some good laughs with a couple plot points to keep you interested. The self-referential humor was also a good look; not taking their remake status to seriously letting the audience know how the first film influenced the game. Just as the first film was a good representation of the era, this film represents the side hustle culture of this era. It could have definitely used a little support from some better actors, save for Lance Reddick. His performance was great; I just wished they utilized his talent more in this film.
The Last Ship (2014)
Really enjoyed the show.
The series finale was okay, but the end sequence was really moving. Definitely a good payoff for the five seasons of the show. Would have been cool to see the first one. The biggest issue I have with the show is the straw man caricatures it created of its enemies. Besides that it was good storytelling, and felt palpable considering our experience since 2020. With all that said, I would definitely recommend watching if you like hoping against hope type of action dramas that allow you to check your brain at the door and just enjoy the action and sometimes overly predictable plots. Long love the crew of the Nathan James.
