Wrapped Up In Christmas (2017)
Charming Schlock
If you're looking for a fun holiday movie that checks all the boxes and may even be part of a drinking game involving predicting plot twists look no further! You would however think that an aspiring artist would have more talent then the average 5 year old.
The Insider (1999)
10 for Quality of Production, -9 For making a Hero out of a Charlatan
Smoking is bad for you. Duh. But when you know just a little bit of science you see right through this "whistle-blower's" claims. Tobacco companies added a chemical extracted from plants to give their product a more pleasant smell. They added green-leaf-volatiles; the chemical that gives fresh cut grass its pleasant smell. Jeffrey Wigand called it "rat poison." Warfarin is a rat poison in huge quantities and can be made from green leaf volatiles, it is also a life-saving drug that prevents strokes and heart-attacks. So the "whistle-blower" lied to make himself appear to be a hero. Tobacco companies called him a liar and were telling the truth, but since they are tobacco companies we have to believe every lie told about them. This movie fictionalized his exaggerations into a full-blown melodramatic hero-flick.
Apparition Hill (2016)
Probably the Best Thing I've Ever Seen on Film
I have been following Medjugorje for more than 30 years. I've seen documentaries, exposés and reports; some trying to prove it, others quoting "experts" who haven't seen the inside of a church in decades or who have a vendetta against one or all the visionaries. This film does neither. It simply takes you there. It makes no arguments. I was most impressed with the sincerity, love and complete normalcy of everyone in the film. They talk about doubts, they talk about fears. They face severe troubles, they all grow in some way. I can't say more without giving away spoilers, but if you are not moved by this film, you should be checked for a pulse. Best. Documentary. Ever.
Sharknado (2013)
I literally passed out laughing
The scene where Fin cuts his way out of a 20,000 lb flying great white and then reaches back in to pull out the girl who was eaten in midair after falling out of a helicopter trying to throw a propane bottle into an F5 tornado had me laughing so hard the room turned black. It was the defining moment of the show. I'm supposed to write ten lines of text for this review, but I don't even think the script for the show was that long. I had to give it 7 out of ten because it was so bad it was good, then it swung to just being bad, but backed up to being so bad it was good again. My family bought snacks, beer and soda to watch this show. We laughed and groaned and made fun of it the whole way through.
